Root [Verizon] Starting Root - Some questions and maybe more soon

Ok it's installing as we speak. How do I back up contacts and wifi passwords? I think that'll be the last thing to do before I can flash the new rom :D

The easiest ways to back up contacts is to log into gmail on a computer, and manually add all your contacts to your gmail contact. As you add them, it will auto sync with your device and will do so on every android device you use with that account ever. Wifi Passwords should be automatically backed up to your google account. Just make sure that when you flash the new rom, you allow it to restore settings from google servers. It's always worked me as long as you have back up setting to google enabled in options before you flash the rom. This option should be under backup & reset in options.

You should be able to sync contacts with google. You can export contacts to a file as well. Go into the contacts app and hit the menu button next to your home button and click export/import and export to SD card.

I know you already nandroided, titanium back up ran, so its just a matter of your contacts being stored. I don't know how reliable moving them to the sd card is because I haven't done that recently because my device doesn't have external storage available. Once you're good on contacts, you should be good to go as far as flashing a rom goes. If it is an aosp rom, just make sure to also have gapps.

Well I heard from someone else that backing up contacts to SD seems to be a valid option so I think I'm good to go on that.

So is this right? I'm gonna go to recovery mode (volume up..) and find CleanRom on downloads that i downloaded from phone, and then i go to titanium backup and restore ONLY the apps i got from playstore, and no preinstalled apps whatsoever?

P.S just something i thought of, if it wipes all the apps when i switch the ROM, how will I have Titanium backup app in order to restore?

While in recovery, you will want to factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache before flashing to rom. Failure to do so will result problems. Yes, doing this will wipe your apps, but your backups will be intact. Once you have done those 3 wipes, flash cleanrom, and reboot the device. You will then have to go through the same setup as if you just bought the device. Make sure you allow restoring from Google in order to restore wifi passwords. After that is done, open the play store as fast as you can, and cancel any downloads that might have auto started. If you don't, restoring your backups becomes trickier. Once they have stopped, download titanium backup again from the play store. Once it is done, launch it and give it root. You can then batch restore all your apps and be good to go.

I'm doubtful of my wifi passwords carrying over since I have never as far as I know done syncing with google before so I'm not sure if that's setup like it should be right now.

Also, I only take from the backup the apps that came from the playstore right? not even other regular preinstalled ones like camera for ex?

Correct. All the important ones will be auto carried over onto the new rom you flash, with all the unnecessary bloat removed. It's really easy to back up the wifi passwords. You can enable it the syncing in the backup option in your settings, or you can backup wifi access points from within titanium backup. If you scroll through the list, there should be two entries for that (1 Green, 1 Yellow). Back them both up, and then you can restore them after you flash the rom. This is the less preferred way of doing it because it doesn't always play nice. I just let Google back it up. If you enable it in settings, you should be good to go.

Oh wait it looks like my contacts and my wifi points have both been backed up according to titanium backup...I'm gonna attempt to flash it now from recovery after I do the 3 different resets that you said.

That probably happened when you back up system data with your apps. Some of it is ok to backup and restore. But restoring certain system info can be problematic. Good luck on the rom flash, I'll still be around in case something goes wrong.

sounds good...i am using the backup assistant plus from the settings (that's what i assume you meant) to back up the settings and stuff...it's being slow as heck but hopefully it will hurry up and i will try to flash

That will not help because I believe that is a Verizon app that will not be on clean rom since it is considered bloat. That only does contacts which you backed up to you sd card so it's worthless.

This is the screen I'm referring to with the top option checked. Though mine might be different since it's an aosp rom/device.

Oh alright...well in that case i'm sure what you meant and shouldn't I be guranteed safe for the contacts since i have them on card?

They might be ok, but that's why I recommend adding them to your Gmail contacts manually on the computer because they will auto sync and be forever saved.

Oh, yeah I found that menu you meant! and turns out i already had that checked, and it's already syncing to my gmail so I guess i'm good on that one

K i'm gonna try to go to the recovery and start her up now and i'll let you know if i get any problems here in a second.

just got to recovery, i only see 2 options for resets, not 3. there is "wipe data/factory" reset and "wipe cache partition"

EDIT: Just a thought, I downloaded the CleanRom into downloads on the phone itself...won't this be lost after i factory wipe everything? or will it still be there in recovery?

To wipe dalvik, you will have to back track to the main menu and it is found under advanced.

Factory resetting won't wipe the entire internal memory. It will leave the internal sd folder completely intact, so it will still be there.

I did all resets, now how do i find the ROM to flash to?

Just like you did when rooting, you are going to want to be at the main menu and use the option to install zip from sd. But this time, you are going to want the internal sd. Then you just have to navigate to the correct folder which I assume would be in the downloads folder.

Ah yes you are right I found it and now I'm going through setup. It is asking me for which launcher I want...I'm assuming there will be a way to change this later...I am using nova right now but i'm gonna go with Touchwiz and see what happens lol

Yeah, launchers are secondary and can always be changed. Just make sure you cancel you app downloads in the play store so that they don't auto download. Just download Titanium backup and you should be good to start restoring.
