Root [Verizon] Starting Root - Some questions and maybe more soon

well in 3 more minutes it will have been 10 and I will unplug USB, pull battery, and try recovery mode again with releasing power button at the correct time, and holding the other 2 until i see the screen, as the text part of the instructions says specifically

Well, I followed as he did, selecting SD card, zip from sd card etc, and got to where he selected download folder to get to where he put his...only thing is, i actually created a new folder in the SD card for my SuperSU bootloader, and I can't find it on my recovery screen....selecting download folder does nothing.

Are you navigating to your external sd card?
In other words, "flash zip from external sd card" ?
Sometimes I select the wrong path and cannot find my zip files.

I'm pretty sure i did exactly what he did on the video, but is it possible to go back in the menus of the recovery to re-check it? Wasn't sure if it was alright to use the back key haha

There is an option to "go back" in the recovery.
I think you are using CWM Touch recovery right?
Therefore, no need to use any of the buttons on the phone

yes i am using CWM but there is no option to go back from where I am right now.

At the top it says 'choose a zip to apply' , under that it says "/sdcard/' which is where i am located at the moment in the recovery. Under that it has the list of possible areas to get the bootloader

Alarms/
Android/
AppGame/
Application/
Autodesk/
DCIM/
Download/
GoLauncherEX/
GOSMS/
GOTaskManager EX/
GOWeatherEX/
GoStore/

Under that it has 'ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.2.3

And under that it says 'No files found' from where I tried to get the bootloader thru 'Downloads/' as per the video with no luck.

I'm not familiar with this device, but do you have to mount the external sd within recovery in order to use it, or is that auto executed when it boots?

It should auto mount I believe. And I say that because I didn't have to mount the card while in recovery.:)

Alright, I think that's how it use to be, but was then updated in a later release because I know I've had to instruct people to do that in the past. Using Nexus devices for so long and not having to deal with it has kept me from staying up to date

o.k...when you first go into the recovery choose:
1. install zip from sd card.
2. choose zip from external sdcard
Then you will find it.

If you scroll down in your recovery, there will always be the option to "Go Back"

Ohhhh I see it now, it was just that I thought all the options were being displayed, I didn't know I could scroll further..turns out I was in the correct area after all, cause it was right at the bottom :D.

Ok I did that and flashed the ---------3 as the final step I believe..so I should be able to X out ODIN and take out USB and good to go?

Or wasn't there something else I needed to do in order to back stuff up in case something goes wrong?

And if I wanted to get a different ROM or Kernel or whatever to try out, how do I go about that? do I get it onto ODIN somehow and then flash it onto device like I did those other things whilst rooting?

At this moment you can create a nandroid backup while in recovery.
It is basically a snapshot of your phones current state. It's like a restore point for a computer, or a game save.

On a separate, unrelated note, my sd card just got damaged. What the fun?!?!?

But thats another topic:(

In recovery, there should be an option to "backup"
And I believe you can also choose where to back it up...like the internal or external sd card...I choose external sd card as the backups can take up alot of space.

alright I will try the same thing. And how do I start trying out a ROM that I see that might look interesting? How do I choose a Kernel that is compatible with 'X' ROM I choose also?

uhmm well I selected "backup and restore" then "backup" and it instantly started chuggin away at something, it's still going and looks like there's a way to go...not sure if it's going to the correct place...?

There might be some roms listed in the sticky guide up top or,
You can try the CleanRom I am on.
Just look for the link in my signature. My signature appears only once per page here so you might have to scroll up.
There are other roms that others are running, but I haven't tried them yet.
