[Verizon] Still Stuicking @ Boot Animation - LogCat.

One other quick note to gapi. If you do in fact attempt to perform this on JB, first use your bootable ICS rom to remove the list_of_gnex_partitions.txt file from the sdcard. Also move or delete the same file in your platform-tools folder on the PC.

It may just overwrite it the second time around but no sense in testing fate. Clean both locations of that file so you're not trying to write/pull a file of the same name.

I had to use the SDrescan to see it. I got the app a long time ago and have not needed it for a long time until now.

When I load a JB ROM and its looping, I just reboot boot into recovery, choose recovery and let it sit and then do the commands if I remember right. Or do I just boot into recovery.? I'll figure it out.

Do you guys want all the stuff I posted for the ICS ROM also, or just the list_of_gnex_partitions?

gapi,

I forgot to ask if you've flashed a/the JB bootloader (you might have mentioned it already)?

I'm prepping (backing-up stuff, gathering and lining-up my ducks, etc. ;) :)) to do this in a while...

Let me know.

Yes to the JB BL, and flashing AOKP JB1 now.

Here you go, I flashed and it looped, I pulled the battery and booted into recovery, had to choose Recovery, then did the command prompts....

Note how much shorter my SD card contents are. Meercy!!! Flashing a restore to make sure its still there.

Unless I'm missing something the partition table and allocations look normal. However, the sdcard contents only showing the list_of_gnex_partitions is odd. And there's one thing even more odd...note the dates associated with your partition table. All of them are:

20 Jan 1 00:00

And the list_of_gnex_partitions.txt file that you JUST placed onto the now anemic sdcard is showing Jan 1 00:06. What's up with that???

On your ICS rom, the same table was showing a date of 2012-09-10 11:35 or basically the time you interfaced the phone I'm assuming (post #44 of this thread).

My list ran on a JB rom showed 2012-09-11 20:50 or basically the time I interfaced the phone. (post #36)

Well, nothing surprises me. My phone will not boot it and reporting bad time stamps is most likely a bi-product of the issue. What ever that is.

My SDcard was intact when I restored the ICS nandroid.

Okay, here's my notes from my JellyBean flash adventures:

- made a backup of my /sdcard

from my PC:

mkdir sd-card-backup-2012-09-12
cd sd-card-backup-2012-09-12
adb pull /sdcard/

- flashed CWM Touch 5.8.0.2 via my Android Root Toolkit app

- took a "normal" Nandroid backup (i.e., no incremental blobs, etc.)

- saved Nandroid backup to above sd-card-backup-2012-09-12 folder

- downloaded AOKP JellyBean Build 1 (JellyBean Build 1 - Releases - Releases - News)

download link: Goo.im Downloads - Downloading aokp_toro_jb-build-1.zip
MD5: f62cfe4a827202899919fd932d5246d7

- downloaded Google apps:
download link: Goo.im Downloads - Downloading gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip
MD5: c155fc7184885b9fd38f853296ccc50e

- downloaded the JellyBean bootloader (flashable via CWM):

PRIMELC03 bootloader from: [Radio][Bootloader] JRO03O Radios and Bootloader - xda-developers
download link: JRO03O_bootloader_only.zip
MD5 for bootloader.img: 6fc954f17d3b5e6019885ca0b759006f
MD5 for .zip: 3649805162d456241ee61f66dd92e26a *JRO03O_bootloader_only.zip

- initial state of my phone: stock 4.0.4 (ICS), rooted, CWM 5.8.0.2 custom recovery installed

- copied all three flashable .zip files onto my /sdcard

- booted into custom recovery

- flashed the JB (PRIMELC03) bootloader .zip file referenced above

- rebooted back into 4.0.4

it booted just fine (ICS likes or doesn't care about the JB bootloader)

- rebooted back into CWM custom recovery

- wipe data/factory reset
formats /data, /cache, /sd-ext, /sdcard/.android_secure

- wipe cache parititon

formats /cache (already done above in wipe data/factory reset step)

- wipe dalvik cache (from the advanced menu)

- here's a step that gapi reports doing that I did NOT do: format /system (never did that step before on any other ROMs I've ever flashed)

is this the key/critical step/issue here??? does formatting /system "break" the layout of the existing /system partition that the subsequent .zip installations rely-upon?

- install zip from sdcard
-- choose zip from sdcard
---- flashed aokp_toro_kb-build-1.zip

-- choose zip from sdcard
---- flashed gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip

- reboot started at 10:54:00

- started a logcat capture, just in case:

adb logcat > lc-just-flashed-jb.txt

- I saw the AOKP boot animation appear 13 times in total

- at 10:56:15, I got the normal welcome / setup screen (skipped the Google login)

- everything looks normal, etc.

Gonna restore my phone back to ICS (after taking a Nandroid backup of the JB setup, of course) and will take a peek at the logcat that I took.

edit: by the way, I looked at the /dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.0/by-name directory while still in CWM immediately after flashing (before the JB reboot) and my files also (like IBT's) had the proper date/time stamps:

Well, I'm not exactly sure where to proceed from here. I guess you could run a block check on data and cache although if there were any issues, I'd be scared as heck to try and fix them. :D

I did run an e2fsck check on both data and cache on my setup. If you're interested, here's the procedure:

iowabowtech-albums-my-pics-picture6770-e2fsck.jpg

The arrows I drew in show the commands and you can see the output afterward which is clean on both accounts.

Important tip though...when you get into recovery, use the "mounts and storage" option in clockwork and select the option to unmount cache. e2fsck won't run on a mounted partition so the 2nd command above would fail unless this is done.

I'm not sure if any of the other partitions can be checked in this fashion or if they even contain the proper format for this tool but I've checked data and cache on other devices in this way so I was good with trying those. Not so much on the rest though as I'm out of my comfort zone.

^^^ Good and continued interesting ideas, IBT! :)

I see nothing different or I have not tried. Thanks.

Guys, did you see where I explicitly did not format /system like gapi reports that he does?

gapi, do you do this everytime? (have you tried not formatting /system?)

I did notice that. I have never formatted /system on this phone although I wonder if a wipe data/factory reset actually does that anyway? Some devs do recommend a "superwipe" but I've never really bought into it and never had any problems by using the old data, cache, dalvik wiping routine.

I took notes last night while I was doing this and I think I remember (my notes are on my desktop at home, so I can't confirm) that the "Wipe data/factory" reset simply formats /data and /cache and two other things but not /system (I can confirm when I return home this evening).

If this is something that gapi always does, perhaps its worth trying the installation without having previously formatted /system?...

I think you're right the more I think about it. But I think the rom updater-script would force the issue. From AOKP JB1 script:

format ("ext4"), "emmc", "/dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.0/by-name/system:, "0". /system")

Or is the "0" an null. I.E. do not format? And another thought is what is the default format used by clockwork when choosing that option? Does it match what the JB roms are using for a format option and if not, could there be a conflict? Maybe you're onto something here SA.

And to make it even more interesting, I just downloaded AOKP M6 (ICS) and checked the updater script on it. The same line reads:

format ("ext4"), "emmc", "/dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.0/by-name/system:, "0")

comparing again to the JB script:

format ("ext4"), "emmc", "/dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.0/by-name/system:, "0". /system")

What's up with the trailing /system? Is it just another way of doing the exact same thing or could it change the desired action, causing troubles for some? :hmmmm:

I wish I knew more in the way of coding.

Skimmed through this and most of it I don't understand :P

I will relate a strange issue I had that "may" be of help.

when trying to load JB for the first time on one of my phones(I had to get several replacements for other reasons) I could not get JB to load similar to Gapi. (it would sit at the boot ani. forever)

What I did, that seemed to work. I went through the normal wipe and loaded the ROM (I was using xeon I think) I DID NOT load Gapps. Booted the phone, logged in. then shut down and then load Gapps.

Everything worked then... Very strange.

^^^ Good and continued interesting ideas, IBT! :)
Guys, did you see where I explicitly did not format /system like gapi reports that he does?

gapi, do you do this everytime? (have you tried not formatting /system?)

Yes, and when I started flashing the Dev's always recommended it.

I have tried it all though, dirty, different combos, without GAPPS,.

Guys, I'm about to start 3 days of 12 hour shifts, 5AM-5PM and will be listening and answering questions but will not be able to do any full blown flashing until Monday night. Please don't let up.

GAPI

I'm in the process of trying to get both the AOKP Milestone 6 and JB1 updater scripts converted to text files so we can get a better eyeball on them. We may find some clues there imo. May upload them to pastebin or something for easier viewing.

Looks like I could have saved my time. :D

Oh well, easier for me to see here so...

ICS

JB

Nah, you'res will be easier to read...plus, mine is Milestone 4 for the ICS version vs. your v6.

I gotta say, I did enjoy having AOKP JB on my phone last night...it just "felt" better ;) :).

I didn't want to take (or really have) the time to get everything all setup on it, but its on my short list.

I still want to go back to the init.rc file and examine its steps--I think that's where the answer might lie. If you can post-up your init*.rc files from your JB ROM up to pastebin, that would be cool and save me from having to bust-out my Linux laptop and unpack the boot.img file ;) :).

Thanks!

What jumps out at you between those two SA? I think it could be a factor that JB is formatting all of /system whereas ICS rom does not.

Took a little crash course on interpreting edify. I'm no wizard to be sure but I think I can get the drift of it all now.
