Verizon targeting mid-summer for tiered data plans

What? You already pay for guarantees on the speed of your cable and DSL. Why should you be entitled to the same speed as someone else who's willing to pay more?

but with Cable & DSL--that's two separate types.

unless they're introducing

LTE
LTE+
LTE++

i'm paying for LTE, same service as someone else seeing that on their bill.

but i understand your point, and it is reasonable. but with the info we have now, as limited as it is, there hasn't been talk of diff levels of LTE.
but if that article is any bit true, i could see them doing that with diff data cap levels

eg 1gb= x upload speeds/x download speeds
2gb-4gb=xx upload speeds/xx download speeds

Thanks for a corp discount I get the unlimited for about $20 along with about %25 off my bill a month. I wish they took %25 off of new phones.

Actually, there is. LTE is really just 4G lite. LTE Advanced is real 4G. You probably won't see LTE Advanced until at least 2012.

Back to your point, "with the info we have now, as limited as it is" ... exactly. We don't know anything yet. If anything, by reading the article, they're looking to introduce lower tiered plans to try to entice feature phone users to convert to smart phones.

I think if you signed up for unlimited already they wont screw you over, if att lets you grandfather in your old unlimited plan with no questions asked then verizon will be dumb not to do the same. Even if they try to change the plan on you in the mid contract then you can opt out, I doubt they can put something shady like we can change your data plan usage at any time, if you sign up for unlimited data with a 2 year contract, I dont think they will just screw you over and change it.

What about going from a Blackberry plan which is unlimited to regular unlimited? Will that be "locked in" or will it be a new unlimited account?

This seriously begs the question..

IF you're gonna have basically 10-20Mb/s speeds, why in gods name would you put a cap, or tier structure it.

Well, other than gouging the ever loving hell out of your customers. It's like making the speed limit in residential areas 65. You're gonna fly by those stop signs and get tickets.

yeah, honestly.. This about seals my interest for the phone. I'm gonna go find a 3g phone and be done with this crap. I don't even know why I wanted a 4G phone in the first place, I got wifi, I don't need to tether..and I'm gonna downlock the hell out of this thing because apparently the battery useage is unreal (compared to my 350mhz droid at least..YEAH THATS RIGHT 350MHZ)

Why would having a higher speed connection equate necessarily to more data usage? There's only so much you can do on a phone that's not tethered.

My father still has a 3G USB aircard that he purchased with an unlimited data plan. He's had the aircard for over 2 years. The contract expired on it several months ago, but they haven't tried to put him in one of the limited data plans. Granted he doesn't use that much data per month so maybe they would remove him from an Unlimited plan if he was a data hog, but so far Verizon hasn't tried to make him get locked into a limited Data plan. Would be nice if he could get a 4G data plan added to his unlimited plan.

I hope VZW doesn't introduce tiered LTE plans with the Thunderbolt launch. That would suck big time. If they don't, then it'll be a good time to lock-up a 2-year contract on unlimited LTE data before the tiered switch is made this summer.

hmm, maybe. Then again I may wanna hit the HQ button on youtube videos. Because I can. But that is a good point..however..I still think with more bandwidth the potential of blowing caps is greater.

lol, I checked my useage I used 3.5gb. I don't tether either. lol

based on the ZDNet article, it sounds like we'r'e going to get "a taste" of tiered data plans with the bolt launch.... might be whats holding up its release. my guess is 2 plans... one with a cap for slightly less than the unlmiited and unlimited for the same price it is now, or maybe $5 more.

The thing that scares me about the tiered plans is that they offered 150mb for $15. If that's how they'd structure it, my data bill would be at least $60/month...not worth it. I'd be happy if they offereg 1gb for $30 or less...

So on my verizion it says i have used 1456700.8KB so far this month, i wonder if i will end up in the higher end usage tier because i stream sirius radio a lot on my phone at work.

How? I mean, even doing a lot of streaming radio ... I'm at a loss.

That's only 1.5 gigs. Most initial docs I've seen have suggested that the cap will be set at 2 or 5 gigs.

I really don't think this is going to be as much of a big deal as some of you seem to think it's going to be.

I hope you're right. You probably are right. I consider myself to be an average user and I'm at 673446.68kb and my usage resets in 3 days. That would be $75.00 at the 150kb for $15 rate and most people wouldn't pay that (I HOPE!).

Also keep in mind, I've heard this kicked around ... it's more of a walled garden approach.

Basic internet connectivity would be unlimited. Certain high bandwidth apps/sites would get blocked, mostly streaming video type stuff. You would then subscribe to those apps/sites as packages or on an individual basis.

And before you say "cool story brah, i'll just torrent my stuff" ... no you probably won't. There's a lot of QoS being proposed here including some deep packet inspection. They're going to do everything they can to block unauthorized P2P.

This is not definite, it is not gospel, it is nothing to freak out about yet. This is just one proposal I heard about many moons ago.

Youtube..I have a thing for commentary videos, I drive a route, I need entertainment in my car, and I don't like music..And during the day I got glenn beck, and rush limbagh. 2 years of that turned me into a very angry person.

I'm one of those people they don't like. :x

Same here. I average about 2 gigs of data and that is because of heavy internet surfing, Pandora internet radio and youtube. I don't ever see myself going over 5 gigs of data a month.

I averaged 5 gigs a month when i had my incredible. Mostly because of youtube and downloading new roms. I spend more time at work then i do at home so leaves very little time for me to be on wifi :( All this tiered data planning makes me one sad panda. :(
