Verizon targeting mid-summer for tiered data plans

Sorry to say but I would take that with a grain of salt. They do not know any more than us unfortunately. I am sure if you call 5 different reps, you will probably get 5 different answers.

Here's how it was explained to me, as I am one of those that live in a Non-4G area, till 2013.... if you get the T-bolt, and the 4g isn't in your area, then you are grandfathered under the $30/ unlimited plan, but if you wait till all of the 4g is in place at or around the 2013 time frame, then those that are waiting to get a 4g phone will be required to pay into the new data plan pricing. so it would be wise if you can do it to get the T-bolt now as it is also fully 3g capable and take advantage of the grandfather pricing plans until 2013 and then wait and see what happens, instead of waiting till 4g is fully in place and realize that you can't get the $30/unlimited plan. if i'm wrong on this then it was explained really wrong to me by Corporate office rep.

For a company that has an operating cost of 10.6 billion dollars, and netted a profit of 106 BILLION last year, they are doing everything to make an extra buck like their going bankrupt or something. If they do tiered data packages, im going to sprint.

On another note.. most lawyers will jump on the idea of a cell phone company making people pay more in the middle of a contract and will be alot of suits against verizon if that should happen.. it's just not ethical business practice nor would it be right on verizon's end. but if you get a phone close to 2013 or there abouts, then that's another story.. i think that they have to wait till the 4G is fully in place before they can make mandatory pricing plans anyway..

You mean unlike the other carriers that only have partial 4G coverage, yet have a mandatory charge?

Is it at all possible that they can limit a 4G phone to a users existing 3G service unless they pay the charge for 4G? Or would that take a hardware swap?

I think the tiered plans won't fully develope at launch. I would buy a flat fee add on like Sprint does now. Vzw will use us as a test subjects to see how much we are actually using and roll out the plans when the other 4G phones start to hit the market.

It seems like most of my data usage is streaming radio or uploading roms :). I would not mind a tier price, heck I would not mind $50 a month if it included texting. To charge extra for texting and vz navigator just nickel and dimes us. I have 5 phones on my account, 3 smart phones and 2 dumbphones and my phone bill is the largest bill I have every month. This seems to be getting out of hand.

I was thinking about calling and asking about my $20 data discount, but I'm sure they won't know anything. The more I think about it, though, the more I'm pretty sure they're going to try and take it away claiming it's only for the "unlimited" data, which they could possibly no longer offer. Unless, of course, they're going to offer unlimited for iPhone users and try and sway me that way. E-V-I-L!

Who with a droid actually uses VZ Navigator? With google, it's kinda redundant and they charge you for it. The same goes for visual voice mail, google Voice works just as well. Am I missing something?

No you are not missing anything. Agreed, would never use it with a driod but the fact that if you wanted to you would have to pay extra, along with texting fees (especially) gets my goat. At some point this stuff should be included. Just give me a full featured phone at a standard rate and let me decide if I want it. Who, for that matter has a smart phone and does not text? yet we play along and pay for the texting fees because they can charge it. Big red need some competition but I don't see any out there.

I have this thing called an unlimited text plan...I can text all I want (thousands a month) and pay what, $10?

I have a friend that uses on an average 65gigs per month.. and that's from a samsung omnia.. 1st generation phone.. they have it tethered via wifi and it's the only way they can use internet.. been doing it for 2yrs now.. and thus far hasn't gotten caught.. wonder what predictament they will be in once all this hits..

And these are the people they are trying to limit because they make it tough on other people to get quality internet off the phone.

Why can't they just pay the $35 or $45 a month for 15MBp/s download?

I checked my Data Usage...I am 12 days into my billing cycle. I have used less then a half gig. Around 425 meg. I do lots of stuff through my net connection. I tether to my ipad a bunch as well as the normal web and e-mailing and the occasional video.

Unless netflix comes to my phone or I really use skype a bunch I don't see this as a major issue.

Funny story I went into AT&T the other day and started asking about rate plans and I asked about the data plan for a smart phone. The guy told me about one plan and than mentioned their unlimited plan and every time he said unlimited he would promptly say 2gb for the phone and 2gb for tethering. I asked him why he kept saying unlimited and than telling the limits, so I said that is not an unlimited plan and he kept insisting it was.

I laughed at him and told he it was shameful that he would talk about an unlimited plan where he was clearly trained to tell you what the limits of unlimited were.

I left with him being angry.

I'd prefer a situation where they throttle the speed if the user exceeds a particular limit. This seems more reasonable than charging extra money for each GB or something of that nature. In that case, there'd be a reduced need to keep frantically checking for data downloads.

I completely agree with that data throttling is the way to go. Instead of putting limits to the amount of data you use they should sell packages based on the speed in which you use the data just like internet providers do. I believe LTE will make this easier to do over the old 3G networks but I'm not sure on this point. It just seems pointless to me to put caps on data when the real issue is the speeds to which people are using not how much a person is using in a month. With more and more people moving to smartphones this seems the best way to go IMO.

I use Tether on occassion and i'm moderate users, I am 9 days out from the end of my billing cycle and have only used about 765mb. I'm sure by the time it starts over I will be at 1gb, but still that isn't enough for me to go all crazy about pricing...Yet. :) I think I would be safe at a 2gb package if offered that way. I am curious, what do you guys do that you are using 3, 4 even 6gb a month? That's A LOT. lol

This seriously begs the question..

IF you're gonna have basically 10-20Mb/s speeds, why in gods name would you put a cap, or tier structure it.

Well, other than gouging the ever loving hell out of your customers. It's like making the speed limit in residential areas 65. You're gonna fly by those stop signs and get tickets.

yeah, honestly.. This about seals my interest for the phone. I'm gonna go find a 3g phone and be done with this crap. I don't even know why I wanted a 4G phone in the first place, I got wifi, I don't need to tether..and I'm gonna downlock the hell out of this thing because apparently the battery useage is unreal (compared to my 350mhz droid at least..YEAH THATS RIGHT 350MHZ)

Smart man.:D

Verizon plays way to many games when it comes to their plans. I had an incredible and it was a data hog even when i wasnt using it. I just went over the 150 meg i was allowed to use. I barely even used the internet on the damn thing. Android phones are data hogs even when you are not using them. You have to constantly monitor your apps. It was a pain in the ass. Of course they dont tell you that before you get an unlimited plan

Whne they do go to tiered data, watch all of the bitching of people who have gone over their caps. Most likely because they dont know how their phone works. This is bad news and I for one am glad I am no longer in a 2 year contract with them. Not worth all the time and effort.

I would rather be doing other things than worrying about how much data my phone is using.LOL

Tiered data is fine as long as they make hotspotting free. Ever look at your statement to see how much data you really use? I don't think I ever saw a month where I was over 300 megs. The average seemed more like 150 megs and I used my phone all the time. If the tiers are reasonable in size, then you could actually end up paying less.

Agree i am actually overpaying as I never use over 2 gb a month. i think verizon should have atleast 2 different options maybe make one 5 gb for $40 or something a month and then 2 gb for $20 a month something like that

who else sees this as a good thing? unless verizon tells you a specific date, and gives you a specific price, on what the tiered pricing will be, then your contract is broken when this happens right?

^ if the above is not correct then dismiss the rest of my post, and this is assuming we all won'
t be grandfathered in.

every other carrier sucks around me, so I will most certainly be sticking with verizon either way. the thing is, is if the contract is broken this summer that essentially means you are up for another upgrade come summer time right? sounds like I could just sell the tb, if I want something new coming out, and put that money towards a new contract phone+pocket money.
