Verizon targeting mid-summer for tiered data plans

why would verizon do 1gb for 30 when att does 2gb for 25. That will never happen unless they wanna loose a lot of customers. 1gb for 30 is a disaster of a plan if it is anywhere near true.

I hear you , but some of us have to have wi-fi to email our clients and recieve email from them. You know how it is these days , people have forgotten how to call people . It's all email & texts.

Verizon: HTC Thunderbolt coming 'very shortly,' LTE tiered pricing too | ZDNet

What bothers me about this article is...

1) The CEO is the one speaking (he should know)
2) He said the TBolt is coming "very shortly"
3) VZW will introduce new tiered data pricing with the HTC
4) VZW doesn't know what the data pricing will be based on yet.

How is this possible, if the TBolt is coming "very soon"? They don't know what they're gonna charge for data yet? And it's due out somewhere between 2 and 9 days from now?

Something strange going on here. Prolly just ZDnet doing its alarm-ism trick again.

They can't charge everyone for LTE at this time because a lot of areas don't even have it yet. They (VZW) want to sit back for a month or so and see how much data is used by the 4g phone. The heavy users vs the casual users. Then they can make the tiers.

Maybe what the TBolt delay was all about is that they sent it back to HTC to add a 4G data counter to the software that would report back to VZW your 4G data usage, as opposed to 3G. Well?

Nah... VZW would know from the tower anyway.

I don't think there will a big price increase unless you stream a lot of data every day. They will have to be half-way competitive with the other carriers.

Well when they get to the point people can't afford the price they will leave.
These are not the best of times and they could send thousands of customers to the other carriers.

Last saturday I picked up the 4G USB Modem from verizon... amazing speeds (grant it not too many people on it) I was pulling 21-22 D/L and 5-6 U/L all day long. I used 2 gigs in a day watching youtube/browsing the web.. returned it the next day, when tiered plans do arrive I hope I can atleast get 10-15 gigs for 39.99 a month, even though thats a long shot lol.

Not with ETF's ..shit double ETF's now, line and smart phone. Money may be tight, but trust me man there ain't no shortage on stupid. And salesmen who oversell plans/phones.

That's what I mean, the speed totally facilitates eating too much bandwidth in a hurry. When I read about the 4G dongle speeds, and pricing I almost peed myself laughing.

I wasn't talking about breaking your contract . I was referring to not renewing a smartphone contract or new customers going elsewhere to buy a smartphone.

Does anyone know if there is some kind of table out there that has how much data you can expect to use based on what you do/how often you do it?
Also, will using the Google turn-by-turn direction (GPS) feature eat away at your data usage in a tiered plan?
I was about to switch to Verizon, but Sprint and their excellent pricing for unlimited everything is looking better and better and they get decent coverage in the Cincinnati area where I'm at. The only thing making this decision hard is the fact that I really would love to have the Thunderbolt instead of the Evo :(

People don't realize the ramifications of going over their bandwidth until they get a few phone bills. And the salesmen aren't much help either.. That's what I was eluding to, it's still gonna happen.

The Google turn by turn probably doesn't use as much as you'd think (unless you're way zoomed in and having to update the map quite frequently and do a lot of local searches). As far as a table, there are too many variables, length of Youtube video, amount of time you update social networking sites, how many websites you go through and the size of each website. Your best bet is to log into your wireless account and see how much data it shows at the end of your billing cycle. Most if not all carriers should have some sort of data usage tool on their website.

Everybody knew this was coming down the pipeline eventually. At first I was dreading it but after looking at my usage, I'll probably be saving money. I'm usually on wi-fi anyways. I NEVER break 1 gig of other data usage. I'd rather not be paying for unlimited when I don't really use it. :)

Sorry to say but I would take that with a grain of salt.

I have nothing to gain from it, you are welcome to take an entire shaker of salt with it. They told me flat out after speaking with managers about it; 4G plans are not 3G plans, so if they come out with one that is tailored toward 4G use, the old 3G unlimited plan would not be grandfathered.

Feel free to dismiss this datapoint. Again, I am keeping my DX and am just here still watching the trainwreck of the TB launch.

I believe you, I believe they told you that, I agree you have nothing to gain from lying. It is the Verizon reps that are always clueless, I have talked to a couple of stores about it and they all vary. One says they aren't changing their plans yet, one says they will be different, another said they haven't heard anything.

I am just saying the reps/managers are just as clueless as us for the most part.

Didn't mean to say I didn't believe you, I just don't believe them even if they were correct. I am sure we will know before they do, with leaks and announcements.

Thanks for your input. Now that you mention it, you are definitely correct, it would be nearly impossible to make a table like that with all of the variables. I did look at my wireless account however, but it doesn't help me much. I have a blackberry curve and hardly use the data at all because it is so incredibly slow and useless. When I get one of these android phones I will be using it infinitely more than I use this piece of crap.

Has anyone considered the timing of this tiered data announcement? Anyone thinking how can I get that early upgrade to get grandfathered in? The carrot of 4G or cheap ($100 off) Droids and the stick of tiered data... I think we are getting pushed to get new devices and sign contracts to meet VZW revenue goals.
