[Verizon] trying to try another ROM....

Larzzzz

Newbie
...using cwm rom manager to no avail. I had and am still using miui but wanna try something else. downloaded several through cwm and not one will install. I keep getting the android with the nice red triangle. My gf chuckles and is refering to this endeavor as the bane of my existence. I am beginning to agree with her. pleh pleh!

What process are you using to flash the Roms? Are you wiping data and cache? What Roms are you trying to flash? What version of cwm do you have? What bootloader do you have?

Kinda sounds like you may be confusing Rom Manager (an app) with clockworkmod (a custom recovery). Rom Manager can download a rom for you but you need a custom recovery in order to install it. And it kind of sounds like you might still have the stock recovery (red triangle with exclamation point) which doesn't allow the install of roms.

rom manager, the app, has an option to download ROMs. this is where I got the miui ROM I am currently running. when the download is complete a window opens asking me to either wipe davlik, davlik and data,or back up existing ROM. wiped davlik and wiped davlik and data than another window opens telling me that it will reboot to continue the installation. this is when the red triangle pops up....

Rom Manager has always been full of issues. boot into recovery and install the rom, instead of using rom manager.

Sounds like your custom recovery shot. I suggest reflashing it using Android Root Tool by Scary Alien. This app is the easiest, bug-free way of accomplishing multiple root oriented tasks. Once your recovery has flashed, boot into it, wipe data, cache, dalvik cache, then flash ROM and GApps. I will follow this thread to monitor your progress. Also, I suggest downloading ROMs from a devs' website or use GooManager. ROM Manager, IMHO, is dated, buggy and is not reliable.

I do have scary aliens root tool kit. And have flashed the stock 4.1 .1 recovery. However when I do a cold boot, phone off volume up and down buttons held and power on then select recovery I end up with the red triangle as well. I have also used ES File Explorer to try and copy and paste the new ROM into the cashe. That pasting fails everytime

Again, you don't want the stock recovery. You cannot flash roms with the stock recovery. Use scarys toolkit app to flash a custom recovery like clockwork or TWRP. Then you can flash roms with it.

What he said. Also, keep the ROM and GApps at the root of your SD card or in an easy to remember folder within the SD card. I'm fairly positive custom recovery only flashes files from the SD.

Alrighty...used twrp and managed to install jb sourcery 3.1 and gapps. OMG what a mistake. after it installed and rebooted I got many" Sorry, but this that and the other thing isn't responding" Clock, system UI, play store, and several others. The top of the screen showing the clock, battery, notifications was non existent; as were the home, task swticher, back buttons on the bottom. twrp would let me choose 10 things to flash, so I chose the ROM first and the gapps 2nd. It wasn't pretty. Luckily, I had the newest MIUI ROM downloaded sitting in ROM manager so I flashed that and have a working phone again. Just in case you're wondering, I did wipe the davlik and cache.
I may try the JB Sourcery 3.2 later, but my gf is enjoying my frustration with this, so I'll do it when she's not around...lol

Thanks for your input everyone and kudos to Scary Alien for his root tool kit and its ability to unlock the bootloader without wiping everything!

Sorry to hear that you had those issues on top of the growing pains you'd already experienced. JBSourcery 3.x is a very solid ROM so there must have been a problem with the install.

When flashing a new ROM or a new version of android (like 4.1 from 4.0), you also need to wipe data/factory reset before you flash. This erases all your apps and user data.

If it helps anyone here, I have crafted a humble tutorial that is listed in the All Things Root Guide sticky. Here's a shortcut to it:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1nugdF8dCvmDxvDcuI2xV_fa8RXLXZdy00U5caIxPKYk/edit

While it is based on TWRP recovery ( which I find far better than ClockworkMod, but I know that's debatable ;) ), but it can be used with ClockworkMod too. Ask questions if you need help BEFORE flashing :)
