Verizon update to fix 2.1 bugs soon!

But wait: why would you want to tether using WiFi?

If you have WiFi access, you already have intrenet access. Why tether?
Peter

Wifi tehter turns your phone into a hotspot. So if you're on the road and your kids have a laptop in the backseat, just turn on your wifi tether and they are online! Beautiful feature!

I can certainly see why Verizon would not want to allow this. It is things like this that will cause us to lose our unlimited data.

I really don't know where Verizon stands on this issue.
I recall seeing a commercial recently (think it was Verizon, but not positive),
Where they are using this asa selling point on a phone that already comes with this. They say it can connect up to 5 devices
seems wifi tehtering is going to become a norm.
Although the part I am not sure about is if there is an additional fee for this. That is where the legal aspect comes into play.

I guess it's similar to when someone in an apartments leaves their router open, and the neighbors above, below, left and right all get free internet.
Somethings just can't be controlled.

Tell me just one thing: what is the ONE thing that you have with the rooted device that makes it worth it you?
Peter

Haha. Let me help you out there. As I said in my first post in this thread, running aloysius rom, which is a sprint port, I don't have the 50% time without signal bug. Also these roms are optimized and overclocked which make your stock 2.1 look like a geo metro to my porsche. See ya!

I turn it on in the car, for instance, and it allows my wife to connect her iPod touch to the car stereo and stream Pandora ! Or, my son can access the internet on his touch too.

Word of warning: The phone will get real HOT !

My guess is that they'll introduce that when they introduce the new 4g LTE network later this year... I read somewhere that they would be keeping unlimited 3g data, but selling "Buckets" of 4g.

I currently use around 2.5gb a month, and thats without tethering, or any root apps. This could be a problem for me...

I hate how ATT does that as the new iphone can run streaming apps in the background, which will only increase their data usage!

My friend has an iphone and hes a mac fanboy so he claims that since he only uses 500mbs a month currently, that the 2gb limit will be a good thing... I dont think he realizes that he doesnt use as much data now as he will once he gets multitasking...

Hopefully verizon can do us a favor and design a better implementation...
I mean, LTE is capable of pretty high data speeds (5-12mbps) So i imagine that the phones are going to be able to suck much more data usage than 3g phones, and so having a 2gb limit will be a serious hamper on anyones fun!

I do... I bought a vent-mount for it. The mounting device itself sucks, but it definitely locates it in the right place.

I have a vent mount, unfortunately, the entire vent tilts making it useless. Fortunately, it came with an adhesive mount to stick it on the dash.

Mine cost $8 from KMart so I didn't expect a lot... Problem with this one is it only has one clip (in the middle), so it can rock side to side. If I plug in the charger, the slight tension does a decent job of steadying it though. Same holder in our Odyssey is useless because the dashboard is sloped quite a bit, so the phone sits looking "up".

Saw one at Best Buy yesterday with two side-by-side clips, so it should be a lot more stable. It was $24 though...

Verizon just announced that they're going to get rid of unlimited data, following AT&T's lead

i saw the article. did i read it wrong or were they only talking about businesses being capped. here is a quote from the article i read:

"Comments from Verizon execs suggest that businesses using Verizon wireless can look forward to tiered data plans in the near future, but with some caveats."

key word businesses here. that seems more fair than to stick it to the average, or even more than average users out there.

Hold on while I try and stop laughing... Almost... Okay, I think I can type now. 60-70% ?? That's a good one.

Yes, well, i think that might apply more to the droid crowd. A lot of really stupid people seem to have decided to purchase an eris. Haha not us, of course :)

Based on my experience, I think most people on forums (including myself at times) believe the topic of thst forum is more popular than it really is. Take it to the real world, and one usually discovers the painful truth.

I speak not just from several technology based forums, but also hobbies, automotive, and cooking related forums. You get immersed in that "world", meet a lot of people, and manage to convince yourself that the related interest is far more prevalent than it really is.

To most people, their phone is a phone, likewise thier car/tv/computer, and cooking dinner is a chore not an adventure....

To us forum types however..... I think obsession might be a bit too strong a word, but jaust barely.

Exactly how I feel too... Not everyone with an Android phone is interested in rooting. As mentioned above, lots of Android phone users can't even be bothered to set up a Gmail account which is req'd to use the Market. People get Blackberries cause they were popular (a fad). Or with either phone type, you know why people got them ? Ready ? 'cause they were a free upgrade from their carrier !

Not everyone who owns a Honda Civic mods it. Not every HDTV owner has a full-blown home theatre. Heh, most HDTV owners don't have HD programming !! Not every satellite TV user has an HD-DVR. Read internet forums and many think otherwise though.

Huh. I guess I had the wrong idea of what WiFi tethering is. Opps lol :o

Well, now knowing this information, I can understand why it would use so much data and why AT&T would want to tier their data plans because of this. They'd lose a lot of money if they kept it all unlimited, because if I had the ability to do this (I'm not rooted yet but I will someday...) I would take advantage of it, because the security setting on my wireless router are too advanced for some things (like Nintendo WFC). I hope Verizon still has the unlimited plan though, because I know I would try and use data as infrequently as possible because of the fear of overage charges. And isn't that the whole point of this phone, is to have data usage and use the interwebz and email etc.? Ugh.

Our Wii won't connect to my phone when I turn on WiFi tethering. I have NO security set on the phone also (since I'm generally a "moving" target, I'll take that chance). It finds it, goes through the "network test", then says something like "can't find a valid access point".

I seriously doubt at&t is losing money by offering unlimited plans on data use. They are just looking for ways to squeeze more money out of you by changing the pricing structure of their data plans. Its all a business to them and they look for every angle they can to turn a profit. They say people will save money because most dont use over 2gb a month, but they know in the end they eventually will and will need to upgrade to more expensive plans. ok sorry to get off topic...

I dont understand why, if they were truly trying to save people money, why they didnt keep the $30 true unlimited plan and just make the lower ones too. They screw every smartphone user over with this because now the new iphone will have the ability to multitask, and in turn fully utilize the hspa speeds, so more data is used. I hope verizon is only considering doing this for businesses, which makes sense, since most businesses are cheap bastards and only allow email use. Which that alone doesnt use more than 500mb per month even if you're a VERY popular person.

We, being on verizon afterall, with our nice android phones that can already multitask, use a lot more data. But hspa is a lot faster (7.2mbps ive heard) While we have a average cap of about 2mbps. So our ability to stream that much at one time is somewhat limited.

Really? Damn. I was looking forward to that, because there are a few things I'd like to download from the Nintendo WFC. And I'm too lazy half the time to go change my router settings :p

Maybe it'll work by the time I decide to go for root. Who knows. Probably won't be for a few months anyways.

Currently people will feel like they are saving money until they start using more data with multitasking and realize the need a bigger data plan. Then they will go over that limit and will get hit with overages until att releases a bigger data plan, after people are in an uproar, with a higher cap that costs more that the unlimited plan was. So in the end they are making more money and you are getting less.

Hopefully when verizon fallows suit and caps their plans, they will still offer an unlimited option, but it will probably be more expensive than the price is now. Thats how I see verizon saying they have a better smartphone plan than att. I mean 2mb for 15 bucks? I have already blown past that just steaming pandora for a few hours driving to work.

First, Nintendo is really lame and about 3 years behind in that they don't support WPA. Second, I put about 3 minutes worth of effort into making this work... For what the kids are doing, they really don't need internet access on the Wii. It may be something simple that you are able to resolve.
