I see people mention how many (or how few) bars their phones indicate but no one mentions poor call quality or dropped calls...

I have the 50% bug but no silent bug. I did notice fewer bars but take a look at your reception during a call. Mine jumps from 2 bars to 3 or 4 during a call.

Verizon sent me a refurbished Eris, because I was having trouble with my original Eris. Now the refurb one has a completely different issue than my 1st one. Oy

It's not making me feel better about my phone... Verizon is just going to keep giving me Eris' with problems. Will I ever be able to make a phone call again? This one has the Silent Bug. I was so annoyed when I tried to call someone 3 times in a row with no luck hearing them or them hearing me.

yeah, this is why i refuse to even bother getting a refurb. there's no point at this point in the game, as they're simply circulating messed up phones anyway. i'm just going to stick it out hopefully..ugh

The scale that the bars use can be, uhhh, "manipulated". People always mention two phones sitting next to one another having different number of bars. What matters is signal strength, not 1 bar or 3 bars or 4 bars.

So, what your saying is basically that one phone might read -94db as 1 bar, while another would read it as 3? That makes sense. Its kinda annoying since were all used to thinking oh, 1 bar, not enough signal to keep a call. I guess it really only matters if you have no bars at all.

I've noticed on multiple occasions that my one bar will turn into four upon making a call... Like the phone shows one bar, I hit call and before it connects, the other three bars light up. Wierd... but I never have bad reception even when my phone is showing one bar (sometimes even no bars, sans "X" above them)...

I don't look at the # of bars before I make a call. I hate to think that people do, they see one bar, and decide they have to wait...

My wife has an enV3 and I noticed that her phone has two signal indicators - one for 1xRTT, one for EVDO, and the number of bars are not necessarily the same (when I looked, she had one bar for EVDO and three for 1X.) Calls are made (and texts are sent and received) over 1X. It could be that the signal strength bars on the Eris are showing EVDO signal until you make or receive a call or text message, when the phone must switch to 1x.

I know, its stupid. Unless your in a car then it really isnt a big deal. Your phone doesnt use signal like it does battery, as in you'll "Run out of signal". For some reason people think it does. People these days lol

Yes, which is what i thought at first, but if you turn mobile network off, which is the evdo connection, the bars should go up to 3. But that doesnt happen unfortunately, so i think maybe the phone sort of "Locks on" to the tower when you place a call. Or something of that sort. Maybe its all just a big conspiracy by verizon to make us think we dont have signal so we make less phone calls on our phones?

this is not actually what you get when you root......... people often confuse the the term wifi tethering

we already have the ability to tether via usb and use the phones wifi connection to connect through a router or hotspot..... this can be done with apps like pdanet

what you get when you root is the ability to turn the phone itself into a wifi hotspot.......... meaning if youre in an area where theres no other internet access........ lets say your on a group camping trip and 4 people bring their laptops........ they could all connect wirelessly to your phone and use your phones 3G connection to reach the internet

I have noticed in the last week or so that I get the 1X (1xRTT) icon more than I have before. When it's showing the 1x it shows 3 or 4 bars, when it's showing 3G it has usually 1 bar.

Hmmm Camping's not what it used to be.

If you go to a campground like a KOA, Good Sam, State Park, etc., most have WiFi anyhow.

Id be willing to bet money that it changes everyones hboot ....... this is exactly what Sprint did with the Hero a couple weeks back...... and you can rest assured that its nearly the same "patch" being sent to us......... they were sent a patch to fix nearly the same problems..... and it also updated their hboot so nobody could have root

they know people will jump all over the patch because it fixes problems so many people are having....... nobody will think twice about giving up their root to fix their phone

Most of my state campgrounds have WiFi access. Never used it when I used to camp, but my family and I never had our laptops with us, or a phone with WiFi access at the time, or anything like an iPod touch or something.

But we did have a TV (cable hookup), generator, and in our last travel trailer we owned air conditioning. Lol, I guess that's not "traditional" camping, but it was still fun.

Back on topic: I really hope the update(s) don't/doesn't screw with the phones that haven't had problems. I haven't had one silent bug while on a call, and only one time where my ringer or vibrate didn't go off. I don't think it will, but it just came to mind.

I was under the impression that it isn't an Android wide issue, it is only found on phones manufactured by HTC. Unless something new has cropped up, I don't think there have been any reports of this on the Moto Droid or other non-HTC Android based phones.

Could be but as this is my only experience thus far with Android, why on earth would I take another chance? I just want my phone to work when I need it to.

If a patch would fix it, I'd be back on board but until then, I guess I have an unreliable phone.

Same here, I don't pay ANY attention to the number of bars my phone shows. It always connects, and it doesn't drop calls - that's really all I ask of a cell phone. (yes it would be OK if it sometimes dialed faster, but that's a different story)

+1. I only look at bars when calls mess up, to see if a signal problem might be the reason.
