Root [VIDEO] 10min Root complete Guide

I'm in the same boat! I've tried 4 cards (not the 2gb pny, but seriously...) and every combination of drivers and tricks I could find. I've tried so many times the back cover is getting loose.

Nothing....

did you try formatting the card (while it's in the phone, mount it as a disk drive) to FAT32, then FAT, then back to FAT32 before starting the process? i got it literally on the first try after doing this (with the walmart pny card)...maybe it would work with a different card doing it that way too.

btw: windows xp creates two separate drives when you do this (one for the sd card, one for the phone's internal memory)...make sure you don't format the wrong one.

I have formatted the card as FAT and FAT32 (and exFAT, and NTFS). I don't know if I have gone back and forth in your order, but there is no possible way that could make any difference. Its worth a shot, but as an IT professional it seems completely illogical for that to be the issue.

I am aware of the 2 drives it creates. I am formatting the SD card, not internal memory.

First smartphone, first time trying to root. Followed video exactly step by step although it took me 20 minutes I had to keep stopping the video I couldnt keep up. Worked perfectly first time. Now to find out what to do now that I have it. Thanks Diego for making an easy how to video.

I spoke to soon. everything in video went smooth, thought i had it, but i cant do any root stuff. no tethering or flashlight. can someone who got this far help.

I'm a relatively smart IT guy too, and I've been working on this for several days and simply can not get it to work. I even went and got the pny SD card from Walmart. I've formatted and re-formatted the SD card, and I've tried "both methods" that are shown in the video. I can never get the device to be recognized. At the part where you're supposed to see the path not found instead of the "Device not Found." Simply will not recognize it.

My gut tells me this has something to do with the device manager / driver or something. When I go through this process, my PC makes all sorts of racket like I'm plugging and unplugging a device. It's obviously the phone being recognized as various devices as you mover from screen to screen on the Incredible.

Are there any other rooting guides that are recommended? I'm travelling this upcoming week and would REALLY LOVE to have wi-fi tethering before I leave.

Thanks All...

Maybe we're trying too hard because we are supposed to know this stuff :-)

I have the same thing with the dismount/mount of the SD card when it goes into recovery. I have confirmed that the drivers are installed correctly. I have tried the HTC sync drivers, the PDAnet drivers, and by manually editing the android_winusb.inf that comes with the SDK drivers when you force the http download.

The card doesn't correctly mount in windows during recovery mode(although the drivers are installed). Is that correct. Shouldn't I be able to browse the contents of the SD card when booted in recovery?

Got my Incredible 2 days ago. tried every method I could find using the stock SD card. Yesterday, I went to Walmart and got the 2 GB PNY card, went home and tried again. no luck, nothing worked. Today I went to Staples and got another PNY 2GB card, but I noticed the packaging was different. Today, root worked first try. I am sure the different card made a difference. For all the rooters that got the PNY card and it didnt work, it may be the walmart one isnt the same. Here are some pics.

This is the one I picked up from walmart. I was a little excited to get rooting, so the package is a bit worse for wear. Notice that adapter says PNY, but the actual SD card doesnt.

Ok, heres the one from Staples. Notice that this one says PNY on the SD card itself, not just the adapter. Both are $11 PNY 2GB cards, but the Walmart one didnt work at all, the Staples one worked first try. Just a thought

BTW I bught the PNY 2G and it still doesn't work!

a friend told me I have to open the cmd as administrator. does anybody agree?

I'll try the pull/reinsert method with the SD card. hopefully that does the trick.

Just tried this with my newly acquired 2gb PNY card.

Fail.

This is ridiculous. wtf. How hard can it be.

Ok, you're new so I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt. When posting, do not post giant sized pictures that mess up the entire flow of the page (especially in width). If you don't know how to scale your photos, PM me.

Man I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I have followed this thing to the T on two diffrent computers and can not get past the "adb push payload-update.zip /sdcard/update.zip" part. I have tried it about 50times thinking I wasn't getting the timming right but no matter what I do I still get a "no such file " erro on my phone and it says "installation aborted"

any ideas

Ohh I'm using 64bit Win7 and the PNY2gig wal mart card
I'm also using a BB MicroUSB data cord, I use it all the time for file transfer as my OEM HTC one got chewed up by my dog.

Jim,
You got the download from page 1 of this thread right? Installed to the root of your C drive? If so, perhaps delete and download again. Sounds like a path issue or the file is truly missing for some reason. You didn't unzip it or move it by some chance did you?

I downloaded it on 3 diffrent computers.

I did unzip the file, is this where my mistake was ?

HI Guys,
Ok, after never being able to have it find the device, I plugged the usb into a port on the motherboard... worked like a charm. So try that if you are stuck at "device not found"

Now though, when I run the 1.bat, it shows 0 bytes... AKA nothing is being copied onto the card... I mistakenly ran the
"adb push payload-update.zip /sdcard/update.zip" command before thinking it had worked, but it obviously did not.
Any ideas? Why won't it copy the files onto the card?

I have attached a copy of my screenshot to show you what I mean, and where I am stuck.

Thanks Fellas.. And before everyone turns their flame throwers on, no I am not a complete noob, and yes I can find my ass with both hands. ;)

Man I'm still stuck, tried it now with 4 diffrent SD cards and 5 computers tried both methods can't get past the loop . Extremely frustrated , gonna take few days off and try again

Jim,
I'm pretty sure we're on the same page here but just to make sure...when I said to not unzip I was referring to the update.zip housed within the main download (SimpleRoot.zip). Just want to be sure I didn't throw you off with that comment and that we were talking about the same file.

Can you see the update.zip file in there? And you are using the commands in the .txt file that came in the download package from this thread?

i decided to just go along with it and go to the next step. it said not found or something but i just rebooted anyway. i have superuser, but i downloaded setcpu and it doesnt work. also wireless tether isnt working. it doesnt ask for su access or whatever it just says cannot start tether... :( please help

ugh, I can get in the exec /system/bin/sh failed portion, but when I execute 1.bat, I get "C:\sdk\tools>adb push busybox /sdcard/busybox
failed to copy 'busybox' to '/sdcard/busybox': Permission denied" etc... with the other files. I tried to change these from read-only (it is marked for some reason but it's greyed out- even after unchecking it it still goes back) and making myself the owner of the files. Any idea?

I re-downloaded the Simple zip file and reinstalled the sdk..

edit:: and, yes, I have all the permissions set to me.

edit2:: ah, I think it's because update was installed or whatever from a failed attempt. So I guess I'll go in astro and delete it... will check back.

edit3:: yep, that was the problem. wohoo! root and typing this on wireless tether!
