Help Video chat / video talk

Bente

Lurker
Anybody, who step-by-step can guide me through how to make video calls? Do I have do download a programme or?

Welcome to Android Forums, Bente.

You have several choices, from video apps of a few sorts to Google Talk. GT does seem to be the method of choice these days. ;) Others will chime in about that.

Google Chat - Chat with family and friends

Have fun!

GTalk seems to be limited to ICS currently. That is, the option only shows up for my one contact who also has the GNex, and not others that have front facing cameras (i.e. Thunderbolt, etc). Not sure how GTalk/GChat works between the Phone and a PC.

But software wise, the GTalk method is easy peasy, and the video effects (Big eyes, small head, etc) are good for a laugh.

On the other hand, Skype works perfectly from phone to pc, phone to phone, or pc to pc, so I'd say go with that if you're looking for an outside solution.

Emmmm, what is the difference between Google Talk and Google Chat. If I look it up on the Internet it seems to be PC-based and not for androids? I am getting more and more stupid by the minute! Is there a "Download for Android"-Google Talk-thing somewhere in cyberspace?

Google Talk is a built-in Google app on Android phones. You already have it. Look in your App drawer. It is a chat app that also does video calls.

But if you want to do a video call to any other smartphone (or PC), regardless of OS, then Skype is probably the best app.

I have found the App market and the closest I get is "Google Talk Widget". Am I on the right track? OK to download this? I am VERY new at this.

Nope. Go to your home screen on your phone, then click on your app drawer (circle icon at bottom of screen), then swipe through your app screens until you see an app called 'Talk'. That's it.

Believe it or not, I have found it! Just a different location on my display. Unfortunately, I can't remember my password!!!! There is absolutely nothing wrong with pen and paper! Thank you so much for your help. Once I get the password problem straightened out, I should be in business.

I got a new password and - surprise - surprise - nobody I know have the option on their phones!!! Get real - this is 2012! I am getting the hang of this! Hmmm, might be a slow starter, but getting there...

ICS currently has a problem recognizing other Android phones that don't have ICS as having the video chat functionality. The workaround is to have the gingerbread phone send the chat invitation. Works great after that.

If this is true, it must not be an issue ALL of the time. I have sent and receieved video chat requests with my wife on her Thunderbolt (i have the GN). I have never had an issue so far. I'm interested to test this a little more now though. I'll report back if I discover any issues.

Easiest way is for both of you to have a Google+ account, and have a video "hangout" in the G+ mobile app.
