Virgin Mobile gets iPhone

None of the people I know that have iPhones are stuck up. Of course, they get irritated with me when I poke fun of their silly phones. I feel bad? Naaahhh.

I realize this is a carrier issue and not a phone issue, but when I go to a friends cabin fishing, he begs me to turn my phone into a WiFi Hotspot because his carrier (AT&T) does not provide 3G for his iPhone at his cabin and Virgin Mobile does. Now that there is a data cap (with Virgin Mobile), I wont be so generous

ok I read one article that said the 16gb 4s would be 200.. that I could actually see as a decent price that current VM customers would go for... but then I read an article that predicted 399 for the 8gb 4 and 499 for the 16gb 4s..

spending 400 - 500 on a phone (not to mention apple) is way too much in my opinion. If I were still with VM when it came out I would consider it at 200... anything more I would just go with the Evo 4g

It helps Sprint with the contract that Sprint signed with Apple to purchase $15 Billions worth of iphones from Apple. Since VM and Boost are owned by Sprint this will help sell more iphones to meet that contract and maybe get some exclusive perks from Apple for Sprint. Personally I wish Apple would just go away. I dont want any Apple products.

Prices quoted in the article were for Cricket Wireless not for Sprint. I would be great price if the 8 GB started at $249 and 16 GB for $299-$349 as the phones would be locked for VM only.

Even though I am an Apple Fanboy, I'm skipping on the iPhone. I have a Macbook, and an iPad. I have come to love Android, and on top of that, there is only 3G iPhones on CDMA networks. (Yeah, I know, the 4 and the 4S on GSM is still 3G too, but it as freaking slow as the CDMA 3G!)

So, I think I'm passing this one. Maybe when Apple adopts 4G (which in my mind is so obvious, and probably just right around the corner...) until then, I'm getting the Evo V 4G. :)

IMHO its not going to be worth buying if it is more than $300, just got my evo and 4G speeds are not as fast as expect but way better than that old slow 3G. The Iphone will be using what I wanted to leave, so the 3D is better. Plus I watched a few 3D videos and I got scared when a bee went flying out of the screen lols.

I never said I was buying one. :P (Although I have wanted one forever) But the pricing is steep... HOWEVER, there are people who will buy it outright just for the cheap plan. 50 bucks for unlimited everything (w/ data throttled at 2.5GB)??? The phone will pay for itself in a year (or a year and two months) just in the savings on the plan.

thats a steep price of admission for the 4s. never been a fan of apple products anyway. i wonder how this will go over

Keep in mind there are a LOT of people (like me) who don't have WiMax available in their area, so 4G isn't even a consideration if you're on VM. The iPhone is expensive to buy outright, but being the cheapest way to get the iPhone, lots of people are going to jump on this.

$649 for the 16gb 4S is the exact same price if you were to buy it unlocked directly from Apple.

Exactly. I can say that I live in a 4G area and do want to take advantage of the speeds, therefore, I won't buy the iPhone at this time. But if I had to have the iPhone, this is the way I would go.

So lets do the math here (very crude math anyway.)

Take an iPhone 4S 16GB with the the unlimited minutes and unlimited messaging with at least 2GB of data.

Sprint- $110/month (unlimited data)
AT&T- $120/month (3GB data)
Verizon- $120/month (2GB data)
Virgin Mobile- $50/month (2.5GB fullspeed, unlimited throttled.)*

*-Autopay required.

NOW, lets do a years worth of service, and include the price of the phone.
Again, very crude math, no taxes.

Sprint 1320+200=$1520
AT&T 1440+200=$1640
Verizon 1440+200=$1640
Virgin Mobile 600+650=$1050

So in just a year, you have saved about 600 bucks on Verizon and AT&T, and about 450 on Sprint.

The take away is this: You will be saving money; how much depends on how long you have the device. If you keep if for two years (which wouldn't be a problem as Apple updates the devices and NOT the carrier); you'd save $1680 instead of using Verizon/AT&T. That's a full year of unlimited service (AND A PHONE!) on Virgin Mobile.

No it isn't 4G, yes you will have to pay a house payment to get it, but in the end, you'll save money. If you want an iPhone, IMHO, this is the way to go. Just imagine if you had it for three years.......................

I am on Straight talk with an iPhone 4 32GB now that I paid $270 for off of Cowboom; Granted its a used phone, but when you figure it like this it REALLY comes out cheaper than through AT&T Directly. I know people in Miami with Sprint iPhones who complain that it is ungodly slow, so I gotta imagine the iPhone on VM will be even slower + you won't have the roaming off of Sprint right?

Aside from the iPhone v Android debate, one thing that I personally think is BS is that new iPhone customers get a $5 discount off their monthly bill for signing up for autopay but customers on any other of their phones don't get the discount (regardless of if they have autopay turned on). Virgin Mobile tweeted me back confirming this. I think this is a load of crap that iPhone users get preferential treatment over all other phone users. My feelings are that if you offer it for one group, you should offer it to the others as well....I think I learned that lesson in first grade. ;)

well aware of the unlocked price. good point on the non wimax area. maybe its just my apple hatred rearing its head.

Agreed I think that is BS. They should offer it to everyone. I had to switch from my $25 plan to $35 when I got my Evo V, which is awesome btw. But now they are going to offer an iPhone and give them a discount? This is obviously just a way for Sprint to sell more iPhones to fulfill their contract. But virgin should play fair with us android users.

Still be rocking my Vs until they die or they change my $25.00 plan. Won't be switching to an iPhone ever due to all the usual reasons. Just Google Pros and Cons of being an iPhone owner, and you'll see why. :)
