CURRENT STATUS

This is a work in process.

Currently we have working 3G (CDMA / EvDo) with both MMS send and receive working on CM / AOSP / TW ROMs. Some have reported working LTE but for best results use Hangouts for MMS is send or receive.

Virgin mobile working on Sprint networks when it comes to MMS messages is an over complicated issue caused the providers. We looked at adapting MMS.apk code to try and fix the MMS receive issue, but after they integrated Hangouts with MMS (with new 4.4) it appears to have worked itself out. When attempting to receive MMS on LTE networks with stock MMS or some 3rd party MMS apps it returns with a "HTTP error: Authorization Required". We are finding this is becoming common. We are trying to solve the LTE issue, but don't hold your breath.


This mod will:
1. Search and edit appropriate lines in build.prop
2. Reset the telephony databases (first boot will take a few)
3. copy correct apns-conf file


Directions:
Flash ROM
Flash Universal Fix
Boot
It may take up to 5min to connect
profit....

First boot may take a few minutes to bring up 3G symbols and get internet connection. The telephony database is being rebuilt - give it a few minutes.

I would say no - do not flash the files from the OP. Those files have partition specific mount points.

Try this one:

Change to:

I also removed the SimToolKit because it was from the GS3 VMU build. I loaded the above universal fix on my phone and flashed it. I suggest this used on 4.2 thru 4.4 ROMS CM / AOSP based ROMs only. Also use hangouts instead of stock for MMS messages.

Before you flash this MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP!!! Also unfotunately Ill have to say it - use at own risk.

Okay... Because I have the LG Optimus Elite and I'd like to use my MMS again... but it looks like it won't provide a data fix.. will it?

Virgin mobile encrypts the MMS messages. SMS and data should work fine wit they fix (in theory). If you want to receive MMS messages you may have to use Hangouts instead of any stock sms app.

This, at least with our phones, allows LTE data connections for many. YMMV

My only question is now my Network says "Sprint" and not "Virgin Mobile" like in my original stock and deodexed ROM. Is this a problem? Is there a way to change it up or does it absolutely not matter given calls, LTE and everything works? Not sure if any upcoming issues would be encountered by having this mislabeled or if the label is completely arbitrary and merely using settings that are similar to Sprint, thus labeled Sprint. I'm aware that VM is using the Sprint network for 4G but like I said, it DID say "Virgin Mobile" prior. Btw guys... EXCELLENT work, I installed this ROM days ago and got nothing by default in the way of proper data connection. Very nice. <3

It doesn't make a difference, unless it bothers your ocd, like it does mine. Fix#3 will change it to Virgin mobile for you. Also many custom ROMs have an option to specify a custom carrier label. Look under notification menu options.

Carrier settings crashes for everyone, @upconvert is referring to a different option to make the carrier label read however you want-you can make it blank, Virgin Mobile, or "Krysti Rocks!" if you desire. It is usually in a similar section of the Settings in any ROM, I'm on LiquidSmooth right now and it is under Settings/Notification Drawer/Custom Carrier Label.

Xblast worked. Obviously not much of an official solution, just modding labels. The "about phone" used to say Virgin Mobile, which that doesn't fix. Again, not sure it matters. 4G LTE seems stable (minus when some snow came in). Not sure if signal strength problem or coverage problem. On the upside, the built in tethering works fine. Obviously something stock ROMs seem to lack. SMS works, Wifi is consistent. All in all, "good". Would be completely useless without this VMU Universal fix. So, top notch again guys. It seems to be testing out rather nicely w/ CM 11 2014.3.3 so far.

The vonly thing is im pretty sure the elite doesnt have lte.

If I was interested in incorporating APN fix #2 into a ROM.zip before I flash it, how would I go about doing so? I've been looking at the file, and some things are obvious. I would add the apk to the system/app and the apns-conf.xml to system/etc. I'm trying to understand what the FixProp.sh script sctually does. I assume it adds those lines to the build.prop, but when I look at my old and new build.props after flashing the fix, I can't quite figure out what is being changed where.

the sed command is like find&replace for windows. Basically says find this line:

ro.cdma.home.operator.numeric.(and anything that comes after it)
and replace (update) with:
ro.cdma.home.operator.numeric=310120

If you are patching a CM or AOSP based rom the fixprop really isnt needed for 95% of the cases. That is to confirm the settings are correct in the build.prop file. You should have these lines in it for the fix to work:

ro.cdma.home.operator.numeric=310120
ro.cdma.home.operator.alpha=Sprint
ro.telephony.default_network=8
telephony.lteOnCdmaDevice=1

It also deletes the phones database forcing it to reload it. If you are patching a ROM for your flashing its not needed.

Not really. Even in about it could say "Sprint" or "Virgin Mobile" and it should be fine. When I convert a ROM to our phones I replace a file in framework-res.apk called eri.xml. This changes the host to "Virgin Mobile" as the stock value. I have found this has not worked in some cases with some ROMs.

First copule of lines of that file look like this: (note toward bottom is "Virgin Mobile")

I flashed the latest CM nightly (03/07/2014) without the APN fix and my data appears to be fine. Actually I was having some 3G problems with the APN fix that I am not having now. I can receive MMS fine, but I don't have 4G LTE signal, so I can't test that at the moment. Anyone else wanna confirm this?

I loaded the CM11 ROM about 03/01/2014 without any fixes and had 3G just fine. I don't use MMS so I can't confirm that (just SMS). The only problem I had with the initial CM11 Nightly was the connection to LTE which the VMU Universal fix sorted out effectively. I've managed to test it a few times and it remains on during any use of the network. I'm now on 03/06/2014 CM11 ROM and I again flashed the VMU Universal Fix, again, stable LTE. Should be fine from what I gather.

i still seem to need the fix on the 3/7 build, internet seemed to work spotty so i believe data was actually working some what

also universal fix just cause .com errors evertime i touched the screen

went back to the old fix #2 everything seems to be working fine

When I was on the S2 what I did was use an application called Textra (I like it much better than any other SMS application). In MMS options I would enter this in the mmsc URL:

http://mmsc.vmobl.com:8088/mms?

I would just backup Textra with Titanium Backup and restore it whenever I switched to a new ROM. Would always work. The APN fixes here do work however (and thanks!) But I'm just suggesting an alternative workaround.

Ok I hit a part of town that I actually get LTE signal at and I could surf the web and receive MMS just fine. No troubles, though I am using Hangouts and not the stock app.

Why is the MMS Proxy & Port 68.28.31.7:80 when Virgin Mobile is 205.239.233.136:81?

I can't send or receive MMS without using the correct VM proxy, and everytime I change it manually after applying your fix, it reverts.
