Root [Virgin Mobile] [VMOBI][ROM][KERNEL] Victorious ROM + VaeVictus OC kernel (Updated 7-30-13)

For 1 and 3 I would always return to stock when flashing a rom that didnt include its own system files without that u cant full wipe so return to stock would be best. As for 3 this kernel supports ext4 so removall links and format your ext2 to ext4 flash this rom and relink

I'll definitely keep MX in mind. I know I've seen some good things in print about it before, just never really felt I needed more than stock so far - but I might be missing out there.

OK. I'm still not 100% clear on this. If I'm using a ROM like Victorious, that does not include its own system files, go back to stock before flashing something new (like CM). I think I get that. And if I was using a complete ROM, like CM, then I can simply reflash to another complete ROM from it, right? Like I did from Harmonia to BoBZhome on my Optimus V. But what about an update to Victorious itself? Still go back to original stock first? Or just wipe caches and flash it? Sorry to keep asking more questions, but I just want to make sure I understand completely.

At any rate, as soon as I finish reading a couple more pages of the thread, I think I am going to start preparing things to do this!

#1- Since Victorious is based on stock Jerry released it as an update package instead of a full rom package to cut down on download size.

The initial flash of Victorious has to be over the stock rom with just a cache / dalvik cache wipe. Future builds can be installed the same way. Since it's an update package you can't do a full wipe in recovery before flashing.

Future roms such as CM10 or if Jerry ever releases Victorious as a full rom package will not need to be installed over the stock rom so there would be no reason to restore stock backup as you would do a full wipe before installing the first time then future upgrades of same rom can be done with only a cache wipe

Partial answer to clarify something on #3... The /data and (the real) internal SDcard are shared... which is why we are using link2sd at all... in otherwords when we don't use link2sd the /data fills up quickly and also fills up the internal sdcard because the partition appears to be shared (linked together if you will).

As for the calendar, I love the samsung calendar, BUT I'm still missing the widgets that somehow dissapeared when I installed Victorious! I normally keep one whole home screen for the monthly view widget, and use the daily view (upcoming events, scrollable) 2x3 widget on my main homescreen. I miss these.

Just noticed messing around my visual voicemail isnt working. is it working for anyone else i dont get notifications of voicemail or anything.

Thanks a bunch kwknott, insanelycool, buzzcon, and TeachMe (and to anyone else who might reply later)! I think I am fairly clear on things now and will try not to pester anymore unless I have problems afterwards.

insanelycool, you might like Pure Calendar widget. Unfortunately for you it does not seem to have a full month view, but I really like it a lot - very customizable.

Voicemail and notifications are working fine for me. I was having trouble when using the trial period for the voice message to text that comes with the phone. I since cancelled it and everything works fine. I missed several important voice messages from my Dr. This was while on the stock ROM so my issue didn't have anything to do with Victoriuos.

Its the updated version I installed another version its working now I refused the updated

wanted to clarify update of visual voicemail caused issues not this rom

Still rockin' one of the first versions of this ROM, but it's killer. I went almost three days once with regular use/GPS for bicycling trip tracking before charging. A+

OK. I flashed Victorious, and I have problems/questions:confused:

First of all, does this look right? I don't see where my former internal sd is now external. I don't see it at all. Not sure why it is calling the second partition Ext2 either, because I told the MiniTool Partition Wizard to make it Ext4, and I thought it worked. It had been Ext2 before today though.

Also, Evernote is unable to open its database now. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

It did make your make your internal your external, because /storage/sdcard0 normally has less than 2GB total. And it's not saying your second partition is ext2

Go to menu/settings/storage on the phone and you will see the swapped info phone storage according to your pics should be 28.70 and its saying ext2 has this much space not that its ext2 format cause mine is 4 and it says the same thing . evernote is probably buggin due to swap try to move the database in the spot it looked for it before did you use link2sd with it?

OK, I guess I understand that about it not being ext2 format.

I was able to open Evernote and let it sync, and all my notes showed up - though I suspect i may have a 200-300 MB database sitting somewhere taking up space for nothing now, because I think that is how much total space Evernote was using before under settings/storage. But now I can't check it. That settings/storage was working to show the 28.7 GB at first, but now it only shows sd. See the screenshots below. It won't let me expand the Device memory info now.

Finally, while charging, a popup said the battery had paused charging because it was too hot. Never seen that before and the phone is definitely warmer than usual. Should I be concerned about that?!

I don't know enough to know what I'm looking at or what to do, but when I open ROM Toolbox and check the CPU control, the sliders were set on 1836 and 918, and the MHz kept jumping back and forth between those two numbers. I slid the upper limit back to 1512 and now it keeps jumping back and forth between 918 and 1512 every second or two. Surely this is not right? Governor is set to ondemand and I/O Scheduler is set to cfq, but I don't know what any of this means.

Actually, that is exactly right. Ondemand, and most of the governors other than Performance, will make your clock speed rise and fall as needed. That's the entire point of a governor, it governs the clock speed. You have to test the various governors, and determine what works best for you based on your unique phone usage. ;)

Should I put the slider back on 1836, or leave it in 1512 in hopes of it running a little cooler? Seems odd to me that it was jumping back and forth so much, even though I didn't have anything in particular running. What about the lower slider? Should I leave it on 918, or move it lower?

First let me apologize for my absence the past 24hrs. A good man passed away a few days ago, and the world is lesser for his loss. I spent the past 24hrs without posting as my own moment of silence to respect and remember Barnaby Jack.

Back to life, see my answer to this quoted post below:
Hi,

First of all, apologies for this long-winded post and asking too many questions :(

I am itching to install Victorious! It sounds great, but I just want to make sure I understand some things very clearly first, as I am relatively new to rooting and custom ROMs. This rooted Victory is now my primary phone, and I like it a lot - so I want to get it right the first time. BTW, I am still reading though all the posts before I do anything.

You posted:
"I have been releasing Victorious as an update package, only replacing apps from the /system/frameworks, /system/app, /system/bin, /system/xbin, /etc/init.d, and boot.img files. I have done this in order to keep the update.zip file smaller and save bandwidth and downloading times. This will cause issues once other ROMs are available, so some time in the near future I will start releasing Victorious as a full system package."

1) So if, in the future, I want to flash a new ROM, say the CM10.1 if you ever get it going, I need to first restore to the backup I will create before flashing Victorious? Then I am good to go with a new ROM? Related question, if you update Victorious again, I simply download it , clear caches, and install? No need to go back to stock ROM first in this case?

2) Regarding Link2SD, you say it must be Ext4 on the second partition. When I bought a new 32GB card and installed that app, I used these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432459 which said specifically to format it Ext2 for the stock ROM. Do I need to copy everything on the card to my computer for safety, then reformat it as Ext4 first (after removing all the Link2SD links first, of course)?

3)Also, I thought I understood this before, but now I'm kind of confused as to how it works with the extsd2internalsd also being used. I guess the 1.83 internal /data storage is a separate entity from the 1.73GB internal storage/sdcard0, which will become external sd? So ALL apps are actually in the 1.83 internal /data storage, with only their secondary files being on the 1.73 GB internal storage/sdcard0? But now, my 32 GB card will be sdcard0, while the 1.73 will become extSdCard? And apps linked to SD will still go to the partition on the 32 GB card, while secondary files will go onto the main storage part of this large card? The new, smaller 1.73 GB extSdCard will be empty, secondary storage to use as I see fit? At any rate, my current partition is 1 GB, of which I am presently using 321 MB. How large a partition do you suggest?

4)Finally, what are the issues with the stock calendar and video player? Anything major, and if so, are fixes forthcoming?

Thanks in advance for any insight.
I believe most of this has been covered by other posters, but I just wanted to answer all your questions in one post for clarity.

  1. You will not have to flash back to stock if someone releases a full ROM. However, if you flash another ROM and then decide to flash Victorious, you will have to restore a stock backup first.
  2. The Victory uses ext4 as it's native filesystem. Links2Sd can work with ext2 and ext3, but the kernel itself has to support those file systems. TBH, I'm not sure if the Victory will support ext2, but fact is ext4 is much better anyway! So I do suggest you reformat to ext4 (be sure to backup your sdcard to a PC first)
  3. Newer versions of Android use what's being referred to as a data/media setup. Here is a good explanation of it, ask any questions and we can fill in the gaps What is a data media device? | TeamWin I would recommend a 2-6gb partition, 2 if you are a light to normal app downloader, 6 or more if you are a hard-core app junky. I personally made my partition 10Gb, just to be able to say nah nah to my SG4 friends. ;)
  4. The stock video player needs a couple of library files, which can be downloaded a page or two back in this thead. The stock calendar is fine, but the calendar widget is not working currently (looking into it). The next release of Victorious will have the video player working.
Hope that answers your questions, if not let us know! ;)

Note- In question 2 you referred to a link for another phone. Please please please do not follow advice for other phones unless you know what you are doing. I have spent weeks worth of hours helping people who flashed something meant for another phone, or attemtping to use apps/settings for another phone, and they ended up bricking theirr phone, some to the point where I had to use Windows Remote Assistance to take control of their PC and fix their phones for them. I hate using Windows, so please do not follow advice for other phones when modifying your Victory!

I have a question here guys.... I am having a lot of issues with my phone lagging and getting the link2sd to work out.... I think I have a lot of stuff conflicting

Can i do the factory reset and get back to bone stock or what route would be best to get back to that point and start all over...

I basically want to get to out of the box stock and then I will take my SD card and format it using linux into the 2 partitions i need for link2sd and start all over.

Thanks again everyone for all your help, this is my first android phone (I have had a few cheap android tablets) and everyone here is just awesome.

Just noticed messing around my visual voicemail isnt working. is it working for anyone else i dont get notifications of voicemail or anything.

VVM has to be updated from the stock ROM I believe. I know I updated it as soon as I got the phone, then removed it as soon as I rooted. Why anyone would pay to have a phone call transcribed to text is beyond me, but to each their own, meh! ;)

I think it does a terrible job and transcribing it anyways
