VZE Froyo 2.2.2 Update Discussion Thread

Why are you gouys so persistant in asking about this, its not causing you any problems and everyone is aware of it. I dont think somebody is gonna make a fix and forget to tell us about it. I saw a screen savoxis posted from a 1.2 beta and it said 2.2.2 so im gussing when 1.2 happens itll be taken care of.

Just got my 3rd System Update Available notification, while rebooting after making a Namdroid (preparing to accept Script 34 OTA). This time I have made no changes to the ROM since the last notice. Clearly this won't quietly 'go away'.

I read that the 'fix' mentioned above, modifying that file described in the fix, is considered risky. Netizenmt, did you try it, and is everything OK since?

What my fix did was allow me to find and install the Update Utility for Ally in the Market. I haven't been prompted to install the Update since so I'll let you know what happens.

Groovy. For now I'll go ahead and run the download, reboot, fail to update routine one more time. If you don't get the notice within the next few days, maybe what you did is the trick to stopping it.

When I discussed the above with DTA, he said he was looking for a fix. Hopefully he'll find something.

I did a check on updates for apps in the market yesterday morning, and that's when the notification came back up on my phone. I wonder if that's what's causing it.

artcwolf, I had the same thing happen. The update notification popped up immediately after I checked for app updates in the Market, I don't think that's a coincidence. Maybe they've pegged the update to Market access so they aren't notifying people who won't be able to understand the concept of going to the Market for the "helper" app?

(And don't laugh, someone in my office has the Ally as well and she caught me playing Angry Birds one day and was like "How did you get that?!" so I had to explain that the reason why her phone was so boring is that she'd never looked on the Market...)

Okay I won't laugh LOL, yeah that would be my mother if i got her a smart phone.

Anyone know the name of the utility in the market?

Its just the upgrade utility but if you are running velocity 1.1 it's not going to show up.something about sdk numbers. Theres a thread around on it and how to change it

can someone please tell me how to downgrade to from 2.2.2? i want velocity and idk if i can flash it to my ally using 2.2.2 without causing problems.

Dautley, just for my own knowledge, can someone like this fellow with 2.2.2 flash the "single operation" batch file now listed under that link you posted, and "magically" land at a rooted 2.2.1? Or does he have to go the long route to do the downgrade?

SuperOneClick [APP]SuperOneClick v1.9.1 (Root, Unroot, Enable Non-Market App) - xda-developers

or

GingerBreak APK [26.04.2011][v1.2] GingerBreak APK (root for GingerBread) - xda-developers

will root 2.2.2 or 2.2.1, you can then install amonra http://androidforums.com/getitnowmarketing/146564-ally-recovery-img-here-custom-roms.html and then flash Velocity.

Thanks. I guess I've been out of the loop for too long. :) I didn't know these options had come along to simplify things. Personally, I have not applied the 2.2.2 upgrade, as I am happy with Velocity 1.1. And I trust that whatever goodies were presented in that update will eventually appear in a Velocity update anyway. Long live Velocity!! :D

Does Fastboot get installed (using one of those options) too?

My understanding of it and i may not be entirely correct is that neither of those can change your fastboot status. The same for ota updates. The only way to lock it down or open it up is to flash the phones entire system, hence the downgrade process in the root guide and how using lgmu to upgrade will restrict access. Fastboot is a very low level interface and cant be altered by anything but a FULL flash. dont know the exact terms but i hopw that can answer the question

My purpose in asking was to prevent someone possibly being misled into thinking these 'simple and quick' options were going to provide all the exact same results as the 'scratch' process in the lengthy upgrade guide. Your answer was good enough for me. Thanks. :)

If you already have fastboot you will keep it, if you don't the above methods won't install it. The only way to get fastboot if you don't have it is the guide.

Before the 2.2.2 update I was all for being stock no root etc. I was content with not being able to tether my internet and lived with no other option other than using this slow ass junk mobile browser. What I don't like is the endless pay me now bloatware they try to push on you. Ads everywhere and getting bombarded with paying more money to be able to use your phone to the fullest. I don't like the fact that they push updates just to turn your smart phone into their sick little marketing scheme. Kinda reminds me of those get rich quick schemes on tv anymore(come on posting those at the michigan works bulletin board). All these do is glitch out and slow down the phone. Then putting sneaky code in the updates to stop you from using the internet like the device was designed for. What next a new update to stop you from playing music because they see it as not making you buy it off of vcast. After 2.2.2 slowed down crashed my phone and used up the battery twice as fast (then they sell you a new battery). Not to mention it caused my pdanet app from working proprly at all. I just took away the headache and followed tridents guide. The worst you can do is format your phone back to fastboot and have to start over with his guide. I'm thankful that ppl are out there to see the potential for a good device and wants to make it better and not make it worse for potential profit

Personally, I recognized Big Red's marketing scheme 3 years ago, when I got my first smartphone. It was Windows Foible, so even less appearance to be steered toward a specific 'market', and I never bought ANY of Red's restricted software. There were plenty of WM app sources outside of the smartphone market from PDA underpinnings.

That's why when I got the Ally (my blessed ESCAPE from WinMo's torture) I already knew to stay clear of them. Anyone who makes me repurchase a paid piece of software just because THEIR HARDWARE failed isn't going to sell me software. :)

Someone on here has said (many times I am sure) that rooting your phone is all about actually OWNING what you are paying for. Truer words were never spoken! I see the whole rooted Android movement as a rebellion against marketing opression. That said, WELCOME to the community! I hope you truly enjoy your Ally for what it can really be, and not what they 'put in the can' when you bought it. :)

It's a larger world 'outside the box' isn't it? :D

I actually hated this phone until I saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Called velocity 1.1. I'm hoping they release 1.2 making it better than verizons make it worse and more limiting

When I fist got the ally, I rooted and removed the bloat ware and LG home crap and was 900 percent happy with it. I actually think it ran better then the thunderbolt I have now does. But I had a very tragic hardware failure and I received a new ally sporting 2.2 and that's where my love for LG ally ended... Once I get a computer that can actually recognise the ally I'm rooting and going back to 2.1..

Remember that the newer Ally will also not have Fastboot, so to use custom ROMs you'll need to follow the downgrade process to Eclair version ZV06, and then proceed forward with flashing a ROM such as Velocity 1.1.
