Root Waiting for Device

Hey folks,

I seem to be having trouble with the revolutionary S-Off and recovery tool. Launching the .exe doesn't seem to do anything besides waiting for the device.

I have a windows computer and I followed the instructions for that, I installed the HTC Driver 3.0.0.007 and uninstalled HTC Sync.

I made sure I enabled USB debugging. I've tried everything I can think of. I've plugged the phone in after starting revolutionary, I've deleted and re installed the tool and did a factoy reset on my phone. Yet I still can't get it to recognize my device.

My computer has no trouble seeing my phone; I can mount the disk, access the sdcard, and even see it in the device manager.

I don't understand why it keeps waiting for the device. Any help would be appreciated!

P.S. This is version 0.4pre4 on a HTC EVO 4G with Gingerbread.

Make sure when you plug your phone in, you select charge only. Don't select mount as disc drive.

Sorry I did not make that clear. But I Have Charge Only selected when my phone is plugged in. Additionally, I've tried removing the battery and doing what I've been doing. I even attempted to load into hboot, install the drivers, boot in normal mode then install the drivers again. Nothing seems to work.

Try to delete the entire revolutionary tool then re-download, and try again. Your file may be corrupted.
Also you may want to backup your SD card to your pc then reformat it. Starting with a clean slate is always better.
You can also try a factory reset on the phone. I'd wait on that until there aren't any other options.

what about anit-virus? make sure that are turned off both on your phone and computer. if you have any firewalls turned those off as well.

I'm having the same problem and have jumped through essentially the same hoops. I can mount as disk and gain access with no problems. I put it back on Charging Only and try to run Revolutionary and still just sits there at Waiting For Device...
I've deleted my files and re-downloaded Revolutionary and still, same thing.

Turned off McAfee and uninstalled Lookout Mobile Security on the phone and still same thing. I'm about to give up.

try it again. i heard that for some people it can take a few extra tries before it works. also keep in mind that this is not a finished product. there still maybe some bugs to iron out. have you tried it on another computer?

Tried another computer and it worked. *shrug*??

There have been a couple of people that had to uninstall programs to get it to work. Hopefully they figure out what programs are causing the issue. Not everyone has access to a second pc to try and use.

As I mentioned in my OP, I've tried re downloading the revolutionary tool. Formatting the sdcard and a factory reset reset were options I saw suggested on the forum and tried before posting.

I can't think I have any programs that I have running that could conflict with it. I have Antivirus and firewall turned off at the moment.

Does anyone know of any programs that could potentially be the problem?

those are the only ones that i know that can prevent this. have you tried another computer? try deleting the drivers that came with htc sync as well.

Sigh. I'm not getting it, I've had no problem rooting my Shift and Nexus S. I followed the instructions specifically; deleted HTC sense, installed fastboot drivers, turn off antivirus, etc. Unfortunately I don't have access to any other computer but I feel as if I've exhausted all my trouble shooting resources.

I don't think anyone has done this, probably because it's a pain in the ass and makes people uncomfortable... but you could try to boot a linux live disc and download the recovery tool for linux. Won't have to worry about drivers or anti-virus issues.

Could you connect your phone to computer anyways before this? I'm guessing yes, but maybe your cable is just losing it? Maybe try a different USB..?

when you plug your phone in, is there any error messages that pops up on the computer? does you computer read the sd card? what size card do you have?

Yes, I'm able to connect my phone to the computer. And tried two different USB cables, the one my phone came with and one from another phone. So I don't think it's the USB cable and my computer has no trouble reading the sdcard; it's 8gb.

Plugging in my phone does not give me any error messages, the revolutionary tool just sits on, "Wait for Device" when launching it.

Do you have debugging on?

I'm not trying to be rude, I understand you're trying to help and I really do appreciate it, but these are questions that I've already answered in the original post as well as multiple times from other posters.

I'm sure it's a common mistake but I do have experience rooting phones, and followed the instructions exactly. I spent close to 3-4 hours troubleshooting and repeating the steps verbatim before coming here for help. :)

I have the same problem. Used 2 different computers. Have downloaded the tool a couple of different times. Have done a complete factory reset a couple of time. Am on 'Charge Only'. All I get is "Waiting for device..."

Any help out there?

sorry man i wish i can think more things but i'm at a loss at this point. one thing you may want to try is go to their irc chat:freenode Web IRC (qwebirc) and see if folks there can help trouble shoot for you. also if there is a solution do you mind if you post it here?

have you followed this thread and tried any of the trouble shooting suggestions?

Well, about the third cable, second computer, fifth tool download and fourth factory reset it finally worked. Personally, I think it was the dead chicken I was swinging over my head......

Yeah, i guess try the IRC. Good luck with that. Last person I sent there had badblocks and was SOL for now.

And, it is the developer release (not public) so I'm sure they are working on several things, perfecting the process.

If you get desperate enough you could try that linux disc... should be pretty straight forward.
