Root Walk Me Thru Rooting My Eris

OK, so I moved some stuff and got rid of a couple of my old backups. Now I was able to download titanium backup pro but it told me the install was unsuccessful. It didn't give me a reason it just said that it wasn't installed. I am putting bloat freezer on my phone now to see if that program can see the stupid bloat that came back onto my phone when I reflashed the rom like you guys had me do earlier to get my browser to work right again. Thanks for all the help so far.

i hope you made a backup first this time, before using bloat freezer to do anything.

also just wanted to point out that you can freeze/delete bloat with the free titanium just fine,so if you do in fact have it installed, you dont need bloat freezer.

as far as the pro key not installing, are you trying to get it for free from 4shared? if so maybe thats your prollem. id advise you to suck it up and buy it... the ability to do automatic batch restores and backups is well worth the price.

if you have purchased it legitimately,i would just keep trying to install it. im sure it will eventually go. maybe try a reboot and try to install it again...

Yeah, I should just leave 4shared alone. But hey reflashing the rom did work. And I have made a couple sets of backups so that nothing will happen like last time. I appreciate you making sure that I don't repeat my past mistake. Now here's the thing, I BOUGHT bloat freezer and it won't install. It downloaded and I know I got charged and I have room for it but it says that the package wasn't signed correctly? So I'm getting ready to take it off my phone and download it again to see if it comes back on right. If it doesn't work after that then I'll figure out something unless you guys have any ideas?

OK, that fixed it. I took it off my phone and then went back to the market and was able to get it downloaded and installed. And to my happiness it sees all the bloat that I don't want and I froze them. Phone is working great, not sure how or why my other program won't see the bloat and allow me to delete them for good....again but oh well. I'll deal with them being frozen and not turning on, on their own as well as not appearing on my screen at all!

So, umm is anyone elses android market not working right on their phone? Downloads just sit there and say they are starting but that's it.

Thanks, I tried the cache thing and that didn't help. I also failed to mention that for some reason out of the blue I know get a force close popup anytime I restart my phone. I never had it before and now I do. It says something to the effect of com.google.apps is not working properly and must force close. Does that have something to do with it? Maybe I did freeze something that I shouldn't have. Also how do I get the fix to that 50% time without signal and all that jazz...you mentioned it in the other thread. One last thing....how do I get back the updates for the market? Thanks!

OK, thanks for the help I figured it out. Now the market is back to normal and I know what the force close message was about. I guess I deleted maps and well my phone didn't like that. So I cleared the dalvik and then just flashed the rom back on top and rebooted. Now I know what not to do. I just froze the maps and some other bloat stuff as well. I should be all fine and dandy now.

Ok, so everything is good with my phone BUT my profile pic coming up from facebook whenever I am texting someone. Theirs comes up but mine doesn't. Now this is a recent thing because it showed up before and after I was rooted. I'd have to say it started after I had deleted maps off my phone. Then when I went back and loaded an earlier version like you guys said so that I could get back maps and my original browser the picture went away. It's still on my facebook and I'm still linked to it so that's still good. I've done some trouble shooting on my own to get it to come back but haven't had any luck. Thanks again ahead of time.

first id force it to do a sync(settings/accounts and sync) and see if it starts working then.

if not,id try doing a plain old reboot a couple times, see if that helps.

if not,try to boot to recovery and wipe dalvik, then reboot.

if still no luck,a workaround might be to click on "me" in one of your texts... add yourself to contacts(under "me"),then manually link it to your FB profile. if youve allready got it setup like that, then you could simply edit your "me" profile and add your FB pic(or any pic) to it manually.

if this is your only prollem at the moment,id count my blessings and enjoy it. and stop deleting things, please. ;)

Well I did everything that you suggested and nothing worked other than going into my contact card for myself and changing my profile pic from the one on my facebook profile to just one that I have in my pics on my phone. Also, at times the pics of my contacts don't always come up. I'm guessing it's just a loading issue on my phone/facebook. I linked everyone that I have numbers for and are friend's with on facebook. Anyways I appreciate the help....and btw I won't be deleting anymore programs...at least not until I know exactly what will happen if I do. I have a lot of reading to do later down the line.

Alright...I have one last tiny issue. The stock e-mail program on my phone won't let me link into my e-mail accounts. I have 2 gmails and 2 yahoo accounts. Everytime I try to link it up and go thru the setup process it says that my e-mail and password could not be verified. Now I know what my e-mails and passwords are. So just lend me one last little helping hand on this please? Is this a phone, network, or e-mail issue? I realize these all seem like little things but to be honest those are the things about cell phones in general that bug me the most when they don't work right. Thanks again in advance.

I noticed you're considering switching to KaosGingerbread. That is something I would advise against at this point. KGB is the least stable, least supported, and least complete gingerbread ROM for the Eris. It has caused a lot of problems for people. Kaos seems to have moved on to another phone and isn't really supporting this ROM. If there is a significant update, things might be different. If you want to try gingerbread, I would go with any of the other Gingerbread ROMs out there.

Thanks for the advice, I wasn't going to switch to a new rom on my eris until I upgrade to a newer phone in June. I'll have to keep doing some searching on rom's and what ones are what. I just like to play around with this stuff now and learn as I go....so long as I don't delete the wrong thing or brick my phone in the process...

Well I'm a dope! I should have trusted my second guessing for once and gotten back on here and reread the whole post on how I should clear my dalvik/cache and then reflash the rom from the zip file. Instead I went with my gut and reloaded an older backup of my rom. Yeah now I've spent a good amount of time redoing everything. But hey it's my own fault! I wouldn't even have reread the earlier post on here if it weren't for the fact that internet browser was gone again and I can't download swype text using one of the aftermarket ones. But anyways....just wanted to throw it out there that I'm a dope....A BIG DOOOOPPPEE!!! :D

Oh man... I've always been skeptical about rooting. Finally decided to do it tonight upon finding out that vz is offering me a premature upgrade in july. I screamed like an 8 year old girl meeting Justin Bieber upon using the keyboard for the first time during the xtrsense setup. No lag! I can't believe I tortured myself for so long.

One question I have is how do I get swype back?

All you have to do is log into swype using the stock internet browser on your phone and have it resend you the e-mail again. Go there and hit the link and it will download just like before. I love swype.....I couldn't live without it. I've had to put it back on my phone several times.

OK so I'm having an issue with my screen scrolling to the left on it's own. It is happening from time to time. Also my phone in general is wigging out like when I go to type a text message and the cursor moves or I get all caps. Kind of annoying. I was wondering if this could be linked to my trackball at all? I know that there is that fix for the trackball that you guys have mentioned earlier in all this, I just haven't ponied up to do it yet. If it's not then I'm thinking it's the battery and I will go get one this weekend because I was already told that with it being the original battery that it was on it's way out once I had it tested at Verizon. Just hoping you guys and gals can give me a bit of helpful advice as always.:D

Take solace that you are not the first or only one. The screen scrolling issue is well-known to be related to the trackball.

There's several ways to at least attempt to clean (probably won't fix it, but might prolong its life and keep the auto-scrolling thing to a minium).

Here's an archive link (can't find the "live" link at the moment) that describes the rolling-around on a clean sheet of white paper: Cleaning Trackball [Archive] - xda-developers

Take a peek at this thread too: http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/54173-trackball-cleaning.html

There's a YouTube video showing the paper-rolling thing, but I can't find it at the moment...

Hope that helps a little.

Cheers!

edit: found the one showing the rolling-on-paper method: http://androidforums.com/eris-tips-tricks/114731-trackball-cleaning.html

Another option would be to install an alternative launcher (or a ROM that uses one) that lets you disable trackball scrolling like Launcher Pro (adw probably does this too). It will at least stop the home screens from scrolling to the left.

Well, I appreciate the help guys and gals....I like so many others on the thread mentioned have maybe touched and used my trackball 3 times? Now my phone does get carried around in my front jean's pocket all the time so that makes sense of it getting dirty. Anyways, I'll give this a shot and if it doesn't work..umm I don't know what I can do or will do.

Well the paper thing didn't work. I don't think that it's my trackball being dirty. Heck it's still white as ever and I'm the second owner of the phone. So any other suggestions?

Buy another trackball if ya can. There's a YouTube video that shows you how or upgrade or buy another used Eris. I have seen somewhere about just taking it out.

you could also just remove it,as described by chicago dave on another post:

I had all the issues many have had with the trackball on the Eris. Since the phone is getting older and I hardly use the trackball anyway, I just removed it. Remove back plate and battery, and then unscrew the 4 small screws in the back. They use special screws but I got mine out with a small blade screwdriver. There is a small board behind the plug for the charger, unscrew the 2 small screws. Lift up on the edge of the small board just enough to remove the trackball assembly. I suppose you could replace it at this point too. I saw them on the internet for a few dollars. I just removed mine and put it all back together. I put a piece of black electrical tape over the hole where the trackball was. Looks and works fine except when the charger is plugged in, that's because it's short due to poor design and not a trackball issue at all. I charge mine and use it after its charged, this will work till my I phone 5 comes out.

if my trackball ever stops working to the point where it constantly tries to scroll this is what i intend to do :)
