Root Walk Me Thru Rooting My Eris

OK, so I tried to do what you guys told me to do and I can't seem to make a backup. I have an earlier backup that I can go to if need be but here is the message exactly how it appears on my screen when I tell it to make a nand backup. Error: Run 'nandroid-mobile.sh'via adb!

So whatever that means I don't know and no I haven't done anything weird or different to my phone since my last bit of trouble with loosing the stock browser. Perhaps I should go back to the rooted version of the stock rom?

There's a couple of reasons why you can get that type of (admittedly cryptic) error message from the Nandroid backup script. If you don't have at least a 30% charge on your phone (a full charge is recommended), or if you don't have enough space on your SD card (at least 200 MB) for the Nandroid backup files.

There are other reasons too, but these are probably the main ones...

If you are conversant with the adb utility, you'd be able to glean more information by grabbing or looking at the contents of the /cache/recovery/log file while still in custom recovery. This would have the exact error recorded to tell you what is going on.

More than likely it's because of my sd card not having enough room. I'll unmount it, and put it in my comp to clear some room. I'll check back once I have done that and tried the backup and reboot process again.

OK so yesterday I spent most of the afternoon going thru my sd card and getting rid of a bunch of stuff. I did the backup and then did the wipe. The wipe took like 2 seconds. I haven't tried to use the e-mail again yet but I will here soon.

Alright, I haven't messed with the e-mail thing since clearing the cache and all like you guys said. Instead I've been having another problem as of late. I can't seem to download anything. I'll let the cat out of the bag on this one because I am forced to in order to get any help. I didn't want to because I was worried about making someone mad by the way that I get some paid apps for free. So, I use 4shared.com and get a bunch of paid and sometimes donation apps for free on my phone. Now since I lost my stock web browser on my phone and have had to use skyfire, pretty much anything I try to download from there comes up with download error. I'm not sure if it's skyfire or if there is something else up. It also happens in the market every so often. I have zedge and I just went to update it this morning and the first time it tried to update it failed saying the package was bad. I redid the update and it worked fine. I've gotten that on other occasions as well. I'm wondering if it's a product of being rooted or if it's just an error that everyone gets from time to time? Anyways, there are certain apps that I would like to get and am unable to because of this problem. I appreciate all your help so far and as always appreciate it in the future. If my methods of downloading apps is frowned upon I do apologize, if my buddy hadn't showed it to me I would have just stuck with paying for apps or just getting free ones.

If you are having problems like this, I would just start over from scratch. Wipe data/factory reset, wipe Dalvik, reflash the ROM and rebuild everything again. If, by chance, you have an old Nandroid that was working well, you can also restore from that, as another alternative.

While I risk sounding haughty, in my opinion, an honorable person either pays for what he wants, or does without. One does not "borrow" without permission or steal; only in cases of life and death should anyone even consider it. In addition, Google has recently pulled a number of apps from the Android Market that many users installed because they were malware, taking advantage of a security exploit in Android that is not fixed unless you are running Froyo 2.2.3 (I think) or higher. Installing any app that isn't from a legitimate market is risky; I can't believe it's worth whatever you are saving in cash.

Not to start an argument on the subject, BUT until I really started getting into the whole 4shared.com site and so forth, the way I read it from my beginners eyes was/is (I could be wrong) that people pay for the app and then if they feel it's worth sharing that put it up on 4shared.com as an apk file. So while myself or someone else isn't paying for it someone did in the beginning. I decided to try a few paid apps for free by doing this so that I wouldn't waste money trying stuff out and not liking it and then not being able to get a refund. I understand your point totally and I respect that, really I do. To be honest I haven't used it that much but for a couple root programs that I couldn't find on that market that I know are free.

So anyways, I guess back to the actual problem....so I need to start over huh? Grr....alright so I guess what I should do is go into boot mode and try to get rid of at least a couple of my old boots that I know I didn't finish setting up and so forth. Is there a way that I can take a screen shot of my boot menu on my phone to show you guys/gals what options I have for which rom to boot into? I understand totally what you guys are telling me about how to tell which one is my first one and so on, but something doesn't look right to me when I go into it and see them. I just don't want to have to start all the way over from the very beginning....again. :)

Bottom line I would like to stay on what I have and/or boot into the stock but rooted rom. At least to fix my current issues and then I'm thinking about messing with a froyo rom and maybe even the Evil rom. I've been trying to get live wallpapers and just found out that Evil Eris has them! Anyways, thanks again for the help now and in the future.

My apologies then - I wan't aware of that market.

BTW, you can try flashing over without a data wipe - it should bring the browser back. It's worth a shot.

first let me say that i dont necesarily think theres anything wrong with sharing paid apps to try them out.

however...

just because someone paid for it initially, doesnt make it really any more right.the developers work hard to make apps and roms for us,and it is not their intention to sell one,and then have that one person share with everyone else

most apps have a free and a paid version. sometimes the paid version has extra features, sometimes its just there to be like the "donate" button on the developers rom threads.

so if you want to try paid apps for free,im not going to say that its a terrible, immoral thing to do,but i do think its important not to take advantage of the developers who donate their time for us to have cool apps and roms for our phones. if you try a developers app and like it,go back and buy the paid version to say thanks.

my 2 cents on that.

on your browser issue, try reflashing it without doing a data wipe as doogald suggested. worse case scenario is it doesnt work. also, sky fire isnt the only alternate browser in the market. if your having trouble with skyfire, you could also try dolphin mini,or opera.

Miren browser is excellent. My new favorite browser.

OK, so what I go into boot mode and just flash the rom again? And doing this won't undo all that I've done setup and personalization wise right? Also I have dolphin HD browser now and it's better than skyfire but I'm not sold on it just yet. On another note, it seems as though my phone is slowly going downhill and I'm not understanding. First let me say this, you know how when you sync/link your contacts to their facebook page and it shows their profile picture whenever you send them a text? Yeah well a couple days ago my profile picture stopped showing up anytime I would send a text to someone. Now this morning, no one's is showing up in text messages. And everyone is still linked. I'm guessing I'll just reflash the phone and see what happens. Maybe all my problems will go away. Just frustrating and I love this phone so much. In fact I plan on holding onto it after I get to upgrade at the end of June just to play around with different rom's and what not. I don't have to keep service on it to do that right?

-boot into recovery
-wipe dalvik
-reflash xtrsense
-reboot. :)

that is correct. as long as you DO NOT wipe data/factory reset you will not have to re-set up

that is correcy. my eris hasnt been an active phone for a month or 2 now. but i still have lots of fun with it :D

What is dalvik
:eek::eek::eek:
"wipe dalvik cache" is in the wipe menu of recovery(or "boot mode" as you call it :))
have you never wiped dalvik cache before when flashing roms? this may explain some of your wierd issues

what is the adb that was mentioned earlier in another post on thus thread?
if youre refering to the error message you got in post #101,i wouldnt worry about it. you only saw that since your battery was low.

My battery was at 100%, it was because my sd card was pretty maxed out. Well this was the first time I have flashed a custom rom with rooting my phone. So, is it suppose to be like a split second long for it to wipe the cache/dalvik? I've done it 2 times now and it was super fast. I was surprised.

It's like wham bam thankya maam.:D

The Dalvik cache is a place where apps (which are written in java) that you run store their parts converted to machine byte code, in order to load and run a it faster the next time that you run them.

ok... but my answer still applies. you dont need to worry about adb :)

yessir. as BC said,it only takes a second.

exact step by step:
-power off phone
-power on holding volume +
-this will take you to Amon-Ra recovery(boot mode)
-choose backup/restore
-choose backup
-after its done, press volume - to go back
-chose wipe
-chose wipe dalvik cache
-after its done(wham bam thanky maam :D) press volume - to go back
-chose flash zip from SD card
-choose xtrsense
-chose reboot system now. :)

hope that works out for you. :)

I did everything you guys said to the T. Although I have a short cut now on to reboot and restart my phone. HEHEHE, downloaded one of those fast reboot apps. But it's all done and I haven't tried to go back and download anything using the web browser just yet but I will.

Hey guys thanks so much. That did work, only one problem. All the bloat that I took off before is back and I can't get then back off because they don't show up on my installer app that I have. And I need to get rid of the bloat to make room for the titanium backup pro so that I can possibly get ris of them if there is not another way to get rid of them. So should I get rid of other apps I downloaded in the meantime to make room for right now? Our do I delete one of my old backups that I made from before to make room? I just want to do the wrong thing here.

if you are really that pressed for SD card space, then either will prolly work.

if you have a backup that youre 100% sure you wont need,go ahead and delete it. just make sure you have a couple goodones to go back to,and this time id make a backup BEFORE you start removing bloatware, just in case you accidentally remove something that you shouldnt again. ;)

OK, so I moved some stuff and got rid of a couple of my old backups. Now I was able to download titanium backup pro but it told me the install was unsuccessful. It didn't give me a reason it just said that it wasn't installed. I am putting bloat freezer on my phone now to see if that program can see the stupid bloat that came back onto my phone when I reflashed the rom like you guys had me do earlier to get my browser to work right again. Thanks for all the help so far.

You have to have the free version and the pro version for it to work. The pro version won't work without having the free version first. Soooooooo install both versions.;):)
