Root Wanting A Fresh Start

Hey guys,

I have CM 10.1 (4/16/13) and I'd like a fresh start before I move to the latest set of nighties.

So far I've backed up things I was concerned most with like pictures and SMS to my SD card.

I'm thinking the process would look something like this

1. Factory Reset in TWRP

2. Flash new ROM and GAPPS

3. Restore items to phone from SD card

Sounds pretty simple, I just feel like I'm forgetting something since it has been a while. :hmmmm:

first thing I would do is make a nand backup and have it in a safe place, the pc or sd card, for example.

do you have a backup program, like Titanium backup pro, for example? I use it to back stuff up. I use the native messaging app and back up my texts, as well.

I use a superwipe, so I am embarrassed to say i don't know what you should wipe in twrp, I would hate to advise you to wipe something you shouldn't. :o

Perhaps you can start on the backups and see what the others advise about wiping.

Then I would flash the rom and gapps per the dev's instructions.

Afterwards, you will end up having to put your gmail account info in again, and it will restore your contacts. If you have it set in settings, sometimes google will start restoring your apps too. I can't remember what setting that is, quite inconvenient when you aren't on a fast connection or wifi though.

I would restore with Titanium or even just go to the playstore and download the apps fresh.

I hope that helps. Like I say, I would like to see what it is correct to wipe, as well, I believe it is more than the factory reset option though,
 
Definitely more than a factory reset. A factory reset only wipes data. If you are changing roms you will want to do a "clean install". If you only wiped data and flashed a new rom over your old rom you would probably have some issues.

I use 4ext recovery that has a format all partitions (except sd card) option. More or less a super wipe like dustwun mentioned.

You will want to wipe everything. System, data, etc. Probably everything you can wipe minus the sd card of course.

Then your new rom flash will flash it's own information to all the partitions and you can restore your apps and app data after the flash with titanium or similar.

skip the first post as it is mostly about gaining root and go to the second post for information on like how to flash a rom....but brian nailed it in the above post.
 
I just do a factory reset (which wipes system and data) and then manually wipe cache and dalvik even though most roms automatically do that when you flash them. I've never had any issues at all doing this.

Some of the aosp roms recommend against using superwipes ( I know carbon does) as there is an issue with the wrong type of formatting getting done but honestly the first time I flashed carbon I did one because I didn't read all of the first post and didn't have any problems there either.

Edited to add that the factory reset I do is the one in twrp not the one in android settings. I think this is what the op is referring to anyway.

Factory reset doesn't actually wipe system, or else there would be no ROM to boot.

Doing a factory reset wipes the data and cache partition, but you'll notice dalvik cache in data. So it wipes data, cache and dalvik cache

Most scripts wipe system during install, so for a completely clean install all you really need is to do a factory reset ;)

I guess you learn something new everyday... I would have sworn when I hit the factory reset in twrp it starts by wiping system but according to the guys that wrote it I guess it doesn't. I'll have to pay more attention to it next time I do it. Good catch.

The next thing I always do after a reset is flash a rom though so it gets wiped anyway. I've never had any problems..
 
Quick way to test would just be to do the factory reset and reboot. If the rom boots, you know system wasn't wiped :thumbup:
