Root WARNING - Do Not Use ROM Manager!!!

I didn't have a backup. That's one of the reasons i bought ROM Manager... to create a backup for me. Anyway my hboot is 0.93 which is not the same as the cm7 but i thought the custom rom would have change it for me...ignorance is never really bliss. No idea what s-off is so i guess i have some research to do.
I'll read the faq again and try to make sense of it. Wish me luck:D

Another thing, this morning i received an ota update. from 2.13.707.1 to 2.13.707.2 when the phone powered off and rebooted the android green robot thingy with the yellow exclamation mark came up. i pressed the power button and it proceeded to the clockwork mod screen. I selected the update from sd option, found the update in the download folder and updated. it went well. my phone updated. before ota updates would just update without me having to do anything. Is it because the clockwork mod recovery replaced the htc recovery when i rooted my phone? I believe i read that happens somewhere idk. I'm just trying to understand the process.

you really should not have done that, if you are rooted and you apply ota updates there is a good chance some random stuff will not work or something will cause you issues down the line, you may also find the recovery could be stock again as it usually replaces recovery and radio

please read all the guides

ruu and start again

yep and never flash an ota when rooted
you can get rooted roms from xda with the latest updates anyway and flash them from clockworkmod (voldown+power)

Ok thanks for the help so far but there is a couple more thing i'd like to ask you :o.
actually a couple more question i would like to ask if you dont mind.
i would like to flash the insertcoin gb sense 2.1. cm7 1.0.8 rom. now this rom requires s-off. i downloaded the usb installer, the alpharev iso file and formatted the usb stick like the guide says
now my problem is when i run the usb installer it say step 1 Select a linux distribution.i just choose the first one because i just dont know. anyway step 2 is browse to the iso file which i assume is the alpharev file which the computer never detects. when i navigate to my downloads folder it's not listed in the explorer window. i unzipped it and still nothing shows up. what am i doing wrong??

Instead of all that messing about, i did this.

Install HTC Sycn on the PC.
Uninstall HTC Sync. - Leave the drivers installed-
Downloaded the latest unrevoked. ( this will install Clockwork Mod )
Let that root my phone.

Once that bit was done i did this to install the Insert Coin GB ROM.
Put the ROM On your memory card.
Turn off my phone.
Turn it back on, Holding the Volume key down.
Go to Backup/restore then do a backup. <<<< important.

I wiped all cache and such too, not sure if its needed.

install Zip from File
browse to the ROM You want installing.
Confirm.
Leave it to install. ( Do NOT take the battery out at all during this process )
Once its done, Press Reboot.
Should load up your new ROM, may take a while on the first load.

Look at SUroots guide, helped me so very much. Go with what that said rather that what i said. :)

use unetbooting and select disk image and choose the iso you downloaded

makesure its the iso you downloaded near the top of the page and not a zip file as the zips are not meant to be extracted

please either create a new thread or ask questions on the xda post

Apologies the link was from this http://androidforums.com/desire-all...esire-root-faq-guide-updated-june-2011-a.html.

No need for an extra thread. I'm done. Thanks alot for all your help. very kind of you. :D

Back on-topic.. exactly what is wrong and how many errors have been seen with rom manager? I've used it with 4 phones this week with no errors, is that just luck? do these errors brick the phone?

These errors are specific to the HTC desire. Are all 4 phones HTC desires?

The issue is that ROM manager uses a fake flash version of cwm recovery. This is booted into by applying an update.zip which is clockworkmod recovery from teh SD card.

In the early days, we could not true flash CWM so this was the only way and worked well, as long as you didnt accidentally format your sd card.

Now though, the desire root methods do flash cwm properly. This seems to cause an incompatability with the fake flash version. We have mainly seem backups and restores failing, rom flashes failing etc.

As people have said above. If your have rooted using unrevoked (which is the recommended way unless you have a CMDA desire with hboot 1.06) then using the custom recovery installed when you rooted is the most reliable method. The "fake flash" method used by ROM Manager is less reliable. We can't give statistics on what fraction of flashes produce problems, because we don't know how many people flash using each method. What we do know is that the majority of posts asking for help after a problem flashing, where there is no obvious error on the user's part, seem to involve ROM Manager. People using the custom recovery installed during rooting do not seem to suffer these problems, or much more rarely. Hence we recommend that people do not use ROM Manager for flashing updates to a rooted HTC Desire.

As has been said previously, this is no disrespect to the deveoper of ROM Manager. His work was very important in the early days of Desire development, and many of us still swear by his custom recovery (CWM 2.5.0.7). But with the development of less "hacked" ways of applying updates to the Desire, ROM Manager is now a less reliable way of applying modifications than those recommended in the FAQs, and so we recommend that Desire owners do not use it. Everything it does can be done using the custom recovery installed during rooting, and with far fewer problems.

Before coming back to this thread; I flashed a new ROM with RM and restored my back ups. Oops. Can I get a link for a manual flashing guide? manual flashing is all I need to do so that I don't get any of the fake flash problems, is that right?

on a desire, just manually boot into recovery. From off, vol down plus Power. Thedn navigate to recovery with volue buttons and power to select.

Cheers. I have a few questions.

I just made a back up using ClockworkMod does this replace the back up Rom Manager made? and where does this save to if I need to recover my device.

So to install a rom I just:

Boot into Hboot (volume down & press power) > recovery > install zip from sdcard? > choose zip from sdcard?

Before that do I need to wipe data/factory reset, and/or wipe cache partition, to get rid of anything RM left behind or am I good to go?

I know these must be tired questions, but I did ask for a link. The only reason I'm using RM is because I don't know how to do it manually. So it might be useful for anyone else visiting this thread cos googling 'how to flash a rom manually' surprisingly comes up with the Rom Manager way.

Its all in the same place cause rom manager is still using a version of clockwork mod.

They are in sdcard/clockworkmod/backup

The rom manager ones will not be replaced, every backup you make will be added to this folder. When you are restoring though, it takes you straight to the list, you dont need to browse there or anything.

So to install a rom I just:

Boot into Hboot (volume down & press power) > recovery > install zip from sdcard? > choose zip from sdcard?

Yes exactly. I tend to have a folder called AFlash so it appears at the top of the list of folders (notice the Cap A and F).

Before that do I need to wipe data/factory reset, and/or wipe cache partition, to get rid of anything RM left behind or am I good to go?

Its always best to wipe before flashing a rom anyway. It wont wipe anything RM left behind, its just data from your existing rom which may be incompatible with your new rom.

Added to faq:

The 2 main recoveries that we recommend here are clockwork mod 2.5.0.7 and AmonRA 2.0.1.

Note* there are other versions of both but we strongly discourage any other version than the above.

Can clockwork mod 2.5.0.7 also be used for nandroid backup? By selecting "backup" in the recovery boot menu does this actually perform a nandroid backup?
