i have a couple of questions before i root, i'd appreciate any help yous have to offer!

i want to keep the stock rom and was wondering; would i be able to do the following with it:

1) use 'shootme' app for screen capture?

2) delete bloatware: blockbuster, sprintiq <---specifically, sprint tv, nova, etc...?

3) wifi tether?

4) any recommendations/tips i should do before i root (besides backing up my apps, contacts, etc..)?

thank you! below is a funny picture to show my gratitude.

1 Yes, I'm sure that would work, most rom developers have included screen capture in their roms now;)

2 Deleting bloatware is pretty easy. I would highly, highly recommend purchasing Titanium Backup Pro from the market. Deleting apps, freezing apps, restoring data, backing up data.... is easy with this app. Plus the developer is one of the best around to respond to issues that you may encounter;)

3 Due to the new forum site rules, wifi tether will no longer be discussed, please refer to the sticky at the top of this page:):(

4 The only thing I would recommend is once you are rooted, please, do not use clockworkmod as your recovery. Many people in this forum swear by amon ra recovery.

The only other thing I can say is read, read, read... and if you're stuck somewhere, ask questions. There are many helpful people in this forum and besides, there's not a stupid question.

Most importantly, have fun:D

good to know, i might play with other roms some time in the future but for now i want to stay stock.

should i buy titanium pro now or after i root, or does it not matter?

do i install clockwork 1st then replace it with amon ra? did i read that correctly in the 'rooting for dummies' guide?

that's why i'm here!!! thank you! :D

one more "not" stupid question ;): do i have to flash the stock rom or is it in the phone already by default?

i would buy the pro key as it unlocks additional features like doing a batch backup and restore. but, you will still need to download the free version as well.

thanx for the understanding

andygu3 has put together a great guide on how to root and get amon ra so if you want amon ra instead of clockwork mod the use this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/436047-rooting-gb-amon-ra-v2-3-recovery.html

all revolutionary does is turn your securities from s-on to s-off and give you a custom recovery. it does not flash a stock rom so you do not have to flash anything if you want to stay stock. however, i would highly recommend that you look into flashing mikg3.0 as your 1st custom rom. it is waaaaaaaaaaay better then stock but still have the stock look. it is a rom that has both sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 added. check it out. i would read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html and go to the flashing section on the how to's.

Only one caveat I can think of with ShootMe (which I use...it's great!). It is not supported by any ROMs that are built on the Android 2.3.7 framework (so basically CyanogenMod 7.1 or above or Deck's 1.3 stable).

Other than that, +100000000 on using MikG rather than the stock rom. It's light years ahead of stock in terms of features and speed.

^ i guess if i'm going to go this far i might as well give mikg a try.

are there any cons to the mikg rom vs stock that i should know? like, is everything stable, will i lose anything? is there a specific version you recommend (3.0 as per ocnbrze)?

mikg3.0 is the latest and greatest. and like all of mik's roms this one is very stable and there is no cons that i know of about this rom. it is what the evo should have had instead of that crappy stock rom that htc and sprint decided we should have.

the best thing about being rooted is that you can make a nandroid backup and if you do not like mikg3.0, you can always go back to the stock rom by restoring your nandroid backup.

Well you can back up your apps with titanium and back up your texts with SMS Backup & Restore (note: it won't back up picture mails). So if you do that, you really won't lose anything. All your SD card stuff will stay on your SD card, so pictures, music and stuff will all be safe.

Honestly there is nothing that the stock rom does better than MikG 3.0 (yes this is the version I would recommend). In my opinion, MikG 3.0 should be the stock rom. You will not regret it....you will only regret that you hadn't rooted sooner.
