Warranty question

Ok. I called VZW the other day to check about a couple hardware issues with my phone. Nothing was resolved but I was told that the phone is no longer under warranty as I didn't purchase it directly from them.

Is this true? I traded my Droid 2 for this phone and I had originally traded my HTC Incredible to get the Droid 2. I did get a replacement Droid 2 while I had it due to the fact it had dust between the digitizer and lcd.

I assumed (perhaps mistakenly) the warranty would stick with the phone and not the original owner of the phone.
 
You did not assume correctly, unfortunately.

Almost all warranties for products are non-transferrable. That means if you didn't buy the product from the person giving you the warranty, then you get no warranty.

Sometimes you can circumvent this if the original owner gives you the original receipt for the product, but not always - it depends on how the retailer tracks sales.

BTW, I'm not sure why they replaced your Droid 2 - maybe someone didn't pay attention closely, or maybe someone did you a favor... or maybe you asked for the warranty close enough to the Droid 2 release date that they assumed everyone was still under warranty. But they didn't have to do that, either.

Yes, some warranties are transferable, usually for larger goods (cars, houses, etc.) or products that have lifetime warranties. Most electronics or consumer goods have non-transferable warranties.
 
For any given product you can always look at the terms of the warranty. It will say explicitly if the warranty is transferable or is for the original owner only.

the warranty is for a year on that device and that device only
if you have to call in a claim on it in say 1 month like i had to
and they send you a replacement.. you have 1 month until that warranty is gone.
even though you purchased the phone brand new and the warranty is for a year, it doesnt transfer when you have to make a claim because of a manufacturers mistake.

You're probably right... but... there may sometimes exceptions. In the 2 years I had my BB Storm 1 (:o) I had it replaced 6-8 times all under warranty and some were well after one year from my original purchase date. This led me to believe that each new phone I received had another new warranty. I could be wrong. Maybe they just felt sorry for me since I got suckered into signing a 2 year on the Storm 1. :p

I suspect that is illegal.

I don't have the source for it right now but I'm pretty sure that the warranty period begins from the time you buy and continues through the end of the warranty period even if you make claims against it. I'd have to look.

Also, this is a good reason to buy these kinds of items with a credit card that extends your warranty.

maybe the quote from binary below this is why for you, but i know on that eris, it was always for me on a refurbished phone from asurion was 30 days warranty

if it is nothing i can do about it now, i kinda cheated then on some blackberries before, where i would order one online, and put an insurance claim on it to get a new one.... that was possibly illegal, but i had no integrity on that kinda thing at that time

but if it is illegal that is some good news to know, we had to do the same thing to my ex wifes blackberries, just had to hope it was in the 1 month period for us to get what we need, but usually after about 5 phone calls (noted on the acct about the same problem) they usually start to become easier to persuade and will get you what you need, thats how i got her a refurbished Droid 2 which she never had a problem out of til i took it back...

Or you could buy a warranty from squaretrade and not worry about VZW or Assurion not covering your phone for you for what ever reason.
 
I just had my X replaced by Verizon due to a screen issue (1 month before my 12 months was up!!!!) they said that on the refurbished item it is 1 year for the original date of purchase or 90 days from getting the referb, whichever is greater. So I have 87 days warranty left on my refurb incase any issues come up.

well beyond your original 1-year warranty but that is because you now have a different device...the refurbished models that they sent you also carry their own (albeit shorter) warranties
 
Well I have a warranty question.
My phone has four giant dots of dead pixels and I'm debating on whether or not to file an insurance or warranty claim. When I moved, they had started as a line across the screen which dwindled and eventually turned into this. I got it in November but my real question is if I do a warranty claim, will the chipped edge and dented corner stop them giving me a replacement?

but i suggest you file an insurance claim, if you did warranty im no so sure they would take it back.... an insurance claim they will, call and find out just to be certain.

but o my word, to think the X can take that kinda punishment and still function, just with a messed up screen lol

The dent isn't as bad as it looks in the picture.. But that happened just weeks after I got it which makes me wonder what the true culprit for the screen damage is :p

Let's just say I don't pay attention when getting out of my truck.
