Root We need your help! Please E-Mail Huawei asking for .32 Kernel Source.

I believe the pub_ email is a exit only address. You will have to send to the original email address. I had the same problem.

A shity company that does not like communication, and they do phones, what an oxymoron.

Posted this to the Cricket FB wall today. Will probably do nothing, but at least people will know.

Just wanted to heads up you guys on who you do business with. Huawei has sold a bazillion phones through Cricket, and has released a 2.2 upgraded Ascend through a competitor. They have since refused to release the source code for the 2.2 Ascend in violation of the GPL laws that govern open source development. The community has mounted an email campaign to get them to release it, and in response they have shut down their contact email addresses. I would urge you as a company to buy from companies that plan to support the products they sell, not just make money off your customers and walk away.

After a poop ton of emails to them, they responded to me with this message:

[FONT=宋体]Dear Sir/Madam

Concerning the source code plz refer the attachment , it is a Written offer for M860 ,it also Pre-istalled in the device of M860 with andriod 2.2

Thanks

Um, what's with the improper spelling/grammar in their message?
Either way, I attached the .pdf that was in the email. Apparently, we need to pay 20 euros for a cd that includes the source code.

20 euro for a mistake they made by not putting 2.2 on the phone when first release...i dont think so, lol

EXACTLY. I don't know what they're getting from this honestly. But once I get enough money, I'm gonna try to confirm with Isaacj87 that this what we need, and I'll probably bite the bullet and contribute to the forum. I really like AndroidForums. Everyone here is really nice :p Not to mention actually knowing what they're talking about ;)

Yea for the community I can see forking it over. But knowing Huawei, it will be the same kernel src that they have posted online.

-For those who want to just use a template. This is thanks to BlastGT1-

To Whom It May Concern,

I am emailing to request the release of the Huawei Ascend 2.6.32 source/kernel as specified by GPL laws on open source programming. Please grant this request, as there are many Huawei Ascend owners who wish to improve their phones, and your company's failure to release an approved upgrade is not acceptable.

Thank you.

I like this, personally..

They could avoid of the cd cost by just posting it online lol

yep, they only have to upload it to their server like they do there other files, but they might have read what we can do to there ascend phone and want to charge us for a kernel to get everything more smooth, but forget them, mines is smooth as a feather.

I literally just sent the email about 500 times. I don't know that the last 100 sent because Gmail says I sent the last email 12 minutes ago even though I just finished, and it only counted to 100 but I know there is about 500. Hopefully Gmail just didn't update and all of them sent because I've been sending it for a long time. LoL

I'm new to the forums, but been reading all post from you guys for the past 4 month, more or less know who's who. Nice forum by the way!

In the software page they show "kernel-2.6.32-FROYO.tar" don't know if it would apply to our phone, it says: Product - Normal, Version - Common Software. and Release Date 5/04/11. kernel-2.6.32-FROYO.tar.bz2

(Software - Huawei Device Co., Ltd..)

its generic and not ascend specific.

Ok, but now with the kernel that came with the Froyo update (2.6.32.9)we could cross-compile and get a specific kernel for use with cm6/7 or something to that end, unless Huawei released the kernel I havent looked yet.

Just an idea, been looking into it since last week, will keep you posted on my findigs PG.

Cross-compile what? We need the .32 kernel source. Huawei needs to give it up.

This is what I sent them:

I am emailing to request the release of the Huawei Ascend 2.6.32 source/kernel specifically for the Huawei Ascend M860 as specified by GPL laws on open source programming. Please grant this request, as there are many Huawei Ascend owners who wish to improve their phones, and your company's failure to release an approved upgrade is not acceptable.

Thank you

This is the response I got back from them:

Thats still the same generic src they've had up. It maybe Huawei specific, but its not Ascend specific. Guess they gonna make us work for it lol.

Getting them to release the source code will allow the dev for CM6/7 (and others) to make improvements to their roms, becuase it gives hardware specific information.
