Webtop WILL be coming to the Bionic after all

After trying the Atrix at the local AT&T store, I'm not enthusiastic about Webtop and the additional peripherals, at all. Certainly not at their current price point, and even less so if they decide to count it as tethering.

How did you like the phone beyond that?

A lot of news outlets are running with what was said as if it's certain the Bionic will get Webtop. But it was never directly said that the Bionic would be getting it. High-end devices in the second half of the year could refer either to devices that will be launched or announced in the second half of the year. The Bionic has already been announced, and it may or may not fit within the launch side of things. Is it possible that it might get it? Sure. But it's far from certain. There's a lot of ambiguity in what was actually said that could be interpreted several different ways.

The Atrix itself, was very nice. I took the time to install and run quadrant, and it benchmarked an impressive 2675. By comparison, my Droid overclocked to 1GHz, running GB, managed 1129 IIRC.

Of course, by itself, this doesn't say much, but it translated well into in-hand performance. App transitions were very fluid and quick, and I made it a point to transition often, to see how it handled it. From taking photos, to navigating the gallery, to launching the browser, and other various apps, the phone was responsive at all times. Needless to say, if the Bionic is at all like this, I'll have no reason to root for the purpose of overclocking.

The physical device was also nice, and the 4 inch screen felt great (my fiancee agreed, who is more comfortable with 3.5 inch devices). Its certainly a matter of perception, but I found it to be more than suitable in build quality, while being thin/easy enough to handle and carry.

I'm hoping the Bionic manages to deliver, as my experience with the Atrix left me more confident, but I'll happily take mine without Webtop/peripherals.

Thank you very much for that review, I for one will nearly 100% guaranteed be picking up a Bionic, it promises to be an amazing phone and I could care less about this webtop stuff.

Hence why the 512MB DDR2 doesn't bug me at all.

Webtop? Yawn..

Wake me when Moto releases a statement saying the Bionic's bootloader wont be encrypted..

Webtop is a nice feature I spose, but it's not one I'll be taking advantage of right now. Maybe a couple years down the road, when we truly are holding laptops in our pockets.

I do hope this means the RAM is getting bumped up to 1GB though. Whether it's really truly needed or not.

I gotta hear this, lol. Why?

The Bionic has half the RAM as the Atrix, plus I will never use the webtop. If it runs in the background all the time, it is using resources that I could be using for my Tegra 2 games.

Can anyone confirm or deny if the webtop app/service runs while the Atrix is not on a dock?

I guess I'd ass/u/me that WebTop would be a separate app, just don't install it, and it won't be running if you're never going to use WebTop. But, that's purely a guess.

Looks like Webtop has been officially hacked: Motorola Atrix 4G Webtop Hacked to Work with Any HDMI Connection | Android Phone Fans

In short, the Atrix can run it's Webtop application through any HDMI connection, meaning there's no longer a need for a proper dock. Def a good sign. However, I think this news will officially kill any hope some may have held onto for an unlocked bootloader on the Bionic.

I didn't see anything about a boot loader being locked in that article? What did I miss?

It's my assumption that once Motorola gets wind that root is the direct result of people not needing to buy a dock to use Webtop that they won't be making it any easier to gain root access.
