Well here it is, the LG Nexus 4! Without LTE

Yea your right, the Top 3 cell carriers in the states...Verizon, at&t, and Sprint have built up these new spectrums and spent millions upon millions of dollars to get LTE available, and basically every new device released on the big 3 carries has the letters LTE in front of the name! Yea forget using technology that's pretty much double the speed!

Sorry, maybe out of the United States that's an option. But not here! Why should we suffer because we have a technology available to use that basically beats the living crap out of HSPA+? All because Google thinks its ok to take a step backwards? I have a better idea, make a US LTE model in the 16 gig flavor and charge $50 more for it. Problem solved!
 
The exciting thing here is the no contract price. Google is really driving the makers and carriers into innovation and competition.
$349 with no contract? That's $300 less than a top Android smartphone only 6 months ago off contract.

I'll be able to buy N4 outright and not worry about losing my unlimited data plan.

N4 16GB and N7 32GB will be the perfect powerhouse productivity machine combination. And I can get both for the price of what the
smartphone alone off contract was just months ago.

I agree rootbrain, its an exciting development, especially for those of us who can't get a subsidized phone and keep our unlimited plan. And for those on pre-paid plans as well. But I am not sure if the other manufacturers will follow suit.
 
I'm upset that Google couldn't get something worked out with Verizon. Apple was able to work out a deal with Verizon to handle their own updates. I don't understand why Google couldn't work out the same deal. That's the whole reason the Nexus 4 isn't coming to Sprint or Verizon.
Verizon HAS to have their bloat on it. It's less boat than my last smartphone, but it's still garbage. And Verizon HAS to have control of the updates. But somehow Apple was able to release iPhones on Verizon without that.
I don't see why Google couldn't get that same deal.

The LTE areas are not as robust as you make out. Sorry, I know the point you are trying to make here and I get it but being someone from the states and in the middle of California I can honestly say that LTE is none existent for AT&T and Verizon is very spotty... and Sprint doesn't even have good phone signal in half the locations let alone good LTE.

LTE is a big marketing campaign for these companies in a lot of areas and nothing more. I've mentioned this already but AT&T promised "4g" networks here almost 2 years ago and we are barely getting HSPA+ and that's even spotty....

I'm not trying to bash or anything. I just wanted to give you a point of view from someone that's in the states and has no love for LTE. Even when it comes to my area I can't think of any reason to "Need it" right now past my current data speeds other than bragging rights and actually getting what the phone company promised me.

I get your point, I really do! For people out of an LTE area the Nexus will prove to be a good buy at $299/$349. But for the people in areas where LTE is lit up this proves to be a step backwards. Listen man I'm a tech geek, so I'll most likely pick one up and use it for a few days and be able to really see how the thing performs and handles data heavy things like videos and web usage. My iPhone 4S was an HSPA+ device running on at&t and was very speedy. With a quad core the Nexus may not be half bad. But I can't make a sure fire decision until I actually get a hands on!

To be honest, unless you're in a TRUE LTE city such as San Francisco or somewhere like that it doesn't really matter. I'm with Verizon and have LTE here in Fresno and its still spotty. Some places are 3g and other places are LTE here. I'm definitely not gonna have a problem getting away from Verizon and getting this GSM unlocked N4 and using prepaid to get unlimited everything for $50/month:D

It's not just the lte that's the issue. The biggest issue is that arguably the best carrier in terms of coverage and largest in terms of subscribers for the country with a population the size of the US is a CDMA carrier and thus can't use it anyway regardless of LTE. That is a lot of people that might be interested in it who don't have that option. Plus Verizon doesn't have HSPA, and there 3g is virtually the speed of dial up in comparison to lte. Would you would pass on this phone if you knew that only the EDGE radios would work, because that's the closest comparison in terms of speed.

Verizon screwed Google over, Google told Verizon to go jump off a cliff.

Well if they get a 32 GB N4, I'll jump ship on Verizon.

I love the Nexus line that much. But 16 GB? I can't even hold all the stuff I have on my GNex. I take a lot of pictures and video.

I'm in NYC, I dropped VZW about 7 months ago for various reasons and have been using at&t's LTE ever since. I've owned the Note, the GS3 and most recently the iphone 5 (all LTE devices) honestly I can't imagine losing LTE in favor of HSPA+. Not to say HSPA+ is terrible and slow, but that's what my LTE enabled device falls back on if I loose My LTE signal, which honestly is really never. NYC, BKLYN, and Queens are really lit up with LTE and I never have a problem. So essentially I feel Google could have definitely made this happen, I mean even the guys on the Verge think its a let down to see such a high end flagship phon ship without LTE on board. Either way it is what it is!

I'm still hoping that carriers will adopt a version this next year and let Google run the reins. I can see both happening. I think Google is just trying to get some traction on the product in order to prove to the phone companies that its a viable product without their crapware on it. There is no way Google will do this forever (Cost cutting) and is probably jockeying for apple style rights with the software....

I bet by mid next year we will see a subsidized version for carriers with LTE and hopefully no more carrier control on updates....

Appears that Google does indeed agree. I'd rather peg needles than run a Nexus though if that's what it comes to. Why would I want to step back from this?

The Nexus S got a WiMax 4G model on Sprint several months after release. The original Nexus S was a 3G only model. Google has shown they can make not one but two LTE Nexus phones, with the GNex on Verizon and Sprint.

Obviously we won't see an LTE N4 before the holidays. After that however is anyone's guess, and saying it won't is pure speculation extrapolated from an off-hand comment. I could just as easily say that Rubin all but guaranteed we'd see a CDMA N4 because he said, ""Tactically, we want to make sure the devices are available for every network on the planet."

Honestly, I only get around 100ms, 10Mbps down, and 8Mbps up with Verizons LTE. That is so weak its rediculous. Thats around the higher results i get too. I have no problem going back to prepaid who uses at&t towers

With regard to the glass back, the edges are raised so that the glass never comes in contact with a surface when you put it down. It protects against scratches. About LTE - yes the iPhone 5 comes with LTE. It also costs about $800 off contract. If you are willing to pay that kind of money, I'm sure you can find a comparable LTE device.

Look, LTE - at least in the US - is good for two things: eating your battery up and making you run out of your data allotments. Just what can you do with LTE within your data limits that you cannot with HSPA+ 42? That's right, the Nexus 4 will feature HSPA+ 42 compatibility, which is blazing fast, and in some cases faster than LTE.

Plus google was being so good with 16:9 aspect ratio screens, showing android to be an entertainment device, but now that they are allowing an odd aspect ratio on the phone, it won't be good for video at all.

Actually, if you take out the on-screen button row, the aspect ratio is exactly 16:9. :-)

Plus this phone won't have a 32GB version, at least not yet, and it has a tiny built in battery.

2100 mAh is not tiny. I used to be ticked off by non-removable batteries too, but I have not removed the battery of my Galaxy Nexus even once. Also, I carry a portable charger with me for emergencies. The storage can be a downer, but 16GB and all the goodies for $350 off contract - remember that. Besides, with cloud storage these days, just what are we storing on our phones that takes up 16GB+?

Frankly, there's only one iPhone, while there are a myriad of Android phones. As such, an individual seller has much less of a pull. Apple charges its users a premium for being able to get these deals... wanna try getting the iPhone off contract? Check that price out.

I'd much rather Google do it the way it is, release the device for a low price off contract, and let the LTE hangups go. Unlocked, unbranded, and top of the line.
 
Where at in Iowa? General area. I used to live in des Moines and it seemed like there were plenty of options there.

If your rural you may not have many options
 
Yeah, I talked to my wife about switching to AT&T, but Verizon is the only carrier that gets signal at her work.
Maybe next year Verizon will get a nexus....
