Well I'll be blowed!!

Man I wish I could say been in hospital two times. At last count by some of the creatures they call"sisters".2021 stitches,612 Staples,27 broken bones (nose 5x, Neck 2x)5x gunshots. OH yeah, almost forgot, doing Chemo Shots for Intestinal Cancer. Refused anymore chemotherapy treatment. Was 240 lbs with 0.02% body fat.Now 170lbs. Stopped chemo at 141lbs.53 now. So your winning against me right now. Good luck to you and your family with this. And remember every day you open your eyes is a blessing...

How are you doing today, @tommo47? Keeping everything down okay [I hope]? How are you feeling overall?

Hi MoodyBlues, our nephew and his wife and their 7 week old baby boy were with us for dinner today. Having had a blockage my wife is insisting that I take the next few days cautiously and stick with pureed food with plenty of water and lucozade. It worked out well as it didn't take me long to eat my small portion and a trifle dessert and while they all tucked in to their turkey dinners I had baby Joshua in my arms :).

Hope you had a good day too.

Cancer then. I had that.
The ulcercomment was because after the cancer was excised I went through a long period of not being able to process (TMI)
Turns out I had holes in my intestines. I've been fine since that was taken care of.

That sounds horrendous, I don't want any of that . The PET Scan shows some abnormals as well as the tumour on my oesophagus so I'm waiting for an Ultrasound scan which will hopefully give the medical team some additional info to help decide the treatment plan :).

Damn. That's a rough one @tommo47
We're you a smoker or exposed to smoke filled environments?

Yes, I smoked from 1959 to 1992 :(. Fortunately I've never had any breathing problems and certainly since 2010 when I had a high blood pressure scare, have led quite an active and healthy lifestyle. The doctor was not a pill pusher and was very much in favour of diet and exercise to control it. So ever since then I've kept my weight well within my BMI range and found ever increasing enjoyment in long, often quite tough, fell walks. In fact I'm champing at the bit to get back out there once I've regained a bit of strength/stamina now I'm eating and drinking again.

:)

That's a very good sign, but be careful not to overdo it! You've been through a lot, and you're going to need some time to recover and heal.

When you are ready, start slow and build up gradually. Remind yourself you have nothing to prove, no race to win, no one to impress. Just enjoy yourself, and let nature take its course. :)

You're absolutely right, I'd struggle to knock the skin off a rice pudding at the moment . My wife will insist on coming with me to begin with (all my walks/hikes are done on my own normally which is a definite no-no for a while), and will probably start with gentle strolls together along the local canal ;):).

It's a somewhat slow process of waiting for the various tests followed by the analysis before the medical team can determine the treatment path.

I'm certainly making steady progress as far as eating and drinking goes and do feel much better both mentally and physically :).

Thanks for the update, @tommo47.

I'm happy to hear you're feeling better, and doing well with eating/drinking.

I see it as a good sign that the doctors aren't rushing treatment. I could be way off base, but I'm seeing it as meaning there's no hurry, i.e., the cancer is well-contained in the tumor and not metastasizing.

Please do keep us updated. You're a part of a family here and we care about you.

Hi @MoodyBlues,

You're not far off base :), they want to be as sure as possible that it is confined to the tumour on the oesophagus, so are eliminating the various abnormals that the PET Scan showed. The results of the Ultra Sound scan have shown my chest is clear. A 2nd area of concern is half way up my spine - a bone biopsy has been considered but after much deliberation by the speciaIists I will probably have a MRI scan first.

Hey there @tommo47, how are you doing? Curious--and concerned--minds would like to know!

(As always, don't post if you'd rather not. Don't feel pressured to say anything you really don't want to.)

Hi @MoodyBlues, I really appreciate you asking, it means a lot to me, and I certainly don't feel pressured.

There has been a fair bit going on over the last few weeks. I had the thorax MRI Scan on the 12 February which revealed what the medics think could be a spread to my liver, but it's too close to my diaphragm to risk a biopsy so I'm going for a full-body CT Scan tomorrow in the hope that it gives them a clearer picture.

They had already taken the decision to start the chemotherapy and I was hooked up for the day yesterday for the initial IV feed and came home with a load of goody bags with the next 3 weeks worth of tablets.

The intention is to have another set of scans at the end of the third chemo session to compare the known and suspected areas across all scans to assess the respective changes.

At least the 'kick-arse' has started - onwards and upwards :).

Thanks for the update, @tommo47.

Please be extra kind to yourself as you're moving through this journey. You may have some rough patches, but focusing on the end-game can help get through those.

Do things to pamper yourself, when you feel up to it. Take a bubble bath if that's your thing, watch some favorite movies, go to a favorite restaurant when your appetite is good, spend time with people who make you happy, cuddle your pets, etc.

Don't lose sight of the fact that this can be beat.

And always know that your AF family is here for you! Feel free to PM me any time. :D

Hi all, admitted again Friday afternoon unable to eat or drink anything significant thinking the stent had blocked/moved for a third time (symptoms exactly the same). Went straight on the IV drip feed then had the endoscopy 19.30ish which showed the stent as being still ok. Apparently my stomach had just decided to go on holiday for a spell and stopped processing my food in-take and was ram jam full, a known but not common occurrence. So they flushed all the crap out and I actually enjoyed a bowl of tomato soup and a strawberry yoghurt for tea yesterday.

So the intense nausea I have had for the last week or so appears not necessarily to have been due to the chemo after all ;).

I quite fancy a weetabix for breakfast this morning :):). I haven't had a weetabix for donkey's years!!

Thanks for the update, @tommo47. I'm sorry you're back in the hospital, but it sounds like they have a good grip on the problem.

Though I'm not familiar with that [on my side of the pond], I've deduced it's a breakfast food (cereal?) you like, but haven't had in ages. When you get the okay from the docs, ask your wife to bring you some! :D
