Well, it finally happened ...

As I'm getting ready to watch the new X-Men movie, I am saddened to report the serious injury to my Droid. Yes, getting out of my truck, I dropped my beloved OG from about four feet. Landed right on the Gorilla Glass. Nice crack in it. Can actually feel it in the corner, but for the most part it's still usable. Typing from it now, as this may be the last time my D1 visits AF.

Had to share with my Droid brethren.

I def had to share this with people I knew would understand the pain. Got my OG on day 1, never needed to replace it, and have gone this long. Def hurts.

I really don't know Chief. I had every intention on handing my Droid off to my brother when I got my next phone, so I guess I need to do an insurance replacement for it. I think it costs like $50 or $75 to do, though (I've been with Verizon for 3 years now, pay insurance on 5 lines and have never made a claim, so I dunno). I'm sure they'd offer me a Droid 2 or Pro (as both seem to be ready to go extinct).

Part of me wants to just go ahead and jump on a Charge, as Costco is about to put out a coupon to get it for $180 with the upgrade. I suppose I could simply hand that off and get the next big thing when it drops. But if I get an insurance replacement, whatever it is, then I save my upgrade and perhaps stave off the need for the next best thing until the SGS2 or Bionic drops.

I do see that broken Droids are selling on eBay for about $50 (more importantly, people are bidding on them), so I suppose that's an option. Also, refurbed Droid 2s are going from $175 to $250, so if I did want to go that route, I could stand to make more, but be out another device to throw around the house.

Anyway you slice it, it looks like these are the last days I'll have with the OG.

Well DudeL, if you're gonna pay upwards of a hundred bucks on an insurance replacement, you COULD always spring about $150 for a gently used, pre-rooted Droid on Swappa and keep rocking until you are really ready to use your upgrade. I bought TWO Droids from Swappa this year (one for the Darling Bride, one for Daughter) and they're great. Just an option you might not have considered.

Thanks Chief, hadn't seen that site before. It's always good to have options. I'm gonna go to my VZW store tomorrow to see what options they give me, maybe see what Costco has got going on, and then weigh my options. Now that the Bionic has been spotted in the wild, it's got me feeling uneasy on pulling the trigger again.

Here's one new option that is already not an option. I was told of a jewelry repair shop that fixes phone screens at our local mall. Stopped by there found out it'd be $85 to replace the glass. Nope, not happening. I could replace the entire phone for $90, possibly $50 with insurance.

Eh, re-rooting takes all of 30 seconds, romming another minute or two tops, and backing up if you use Titanium is as easy as inserting a memory card, installing titanium, and having it restore all the apps.

Should take a max of about 10 minutes if you ask me.

Would hate to see you leave the Droid forums for greener pastures too soon, Yank. We've lost too many great users already. I'm honestly just getting by with my OG as long as I can. I believe I am already up for a contract renewal (got ours on Day 2 of release) and nothing out there is tempting me. I just hope either the Bionic or the Function is released by the end of the summer (and HOPEFULLY before tiered data pricing is sadly introduced).

That would mean I'd still get to stick around here, flash new ROMs, and see how far the Droid could feasibly go (though I don't think any of us think it'll be too much farther). And this may still be the case if I get a replacement (which I most likely will, unless it's a D2).

I wouldn't mind having to reroot, after all, when we first did it we had to learn ADB and even some code. Now they've made it so simple. That and perhaps a new D1 wouldn't be so darned topped out. I do think I've worked my poor lil Droid too hard, it only goes so fast.

And I must say this. All these new phones, all these options. But not one is a clear cut choice. You have to pick what feature means the most to you. We didn't have that prob when we first got our Droids. It was the best phone when it dropped, pure vanilla Android, unlocked, and the community was behind it. Gonna miss that.

You hit it perfectly on the head. You have to pick what features mean the most to you. If long battery life is a main goal, the the TB probably isn't for you (unless you go with an extended battery...yuck). You want unlocked bootloaders...well, Motorola isn't an option until this fall supposedly. You don't want an all plastic phone, say goodbye to the Charge. Want 4G...then no DX2 or Dinc2.

But all of the new phones are better spec'd than the original D1 so you don't lose out completely. On Verizon, there isn't a perfect device. Now the Sensation and EVO 3D look pretty sweet, but they are not good enough to make me jump to T-Mobile or Sprint.

Luckily, I got my T-Bolt on a 1 year contract before Verizon dumped that program...so I get to shop again in January

Maybe you just hang on to your upgrade, buy a used DX or a Fascinate (I'm selling mine ) on eBay and that will give you a 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, and a bigger screen. Use it for the time being and then when you see a phone drop that you just have to have...you'll be in a position to do so.

I've got a family plan with 5 lines and data on all of them, so I'm not too worried about upgrades. I've got 2 at the ready and another coming up in less than a month. I have every intention on upgrading each of those 3 to 4G before they make the switch to tiered data (I only pay $10 instead of $30 on 5 lines of data, I ain't losing that!). If I have to buy 3 Droid Charges, I will. But I'll get them at Costco so I at least have a 90 day window.

I'm really starting to think I need to work for Verizon to feed my Android addiction. lol

I think the Charge is about the best option right now, unless the latest update (which is the OTA is due at the end of this month) to the Thunderbolt clears some of the issues up...

I did use one upgrade already as my g/f's DInc is complete garbage. So, it's now been replaced with a Droid Charge. Def a major upgrade over both the DInc and Droid.

When I called Asurian, I was greeted with a message that said I would get free next day delivery if I filed the claim online. So I jumped on, and I must admit, it was pretty damn easy and quick. But as I didn't get to talk to an associate, I have no idea what I'm getting (but as it's coming tomorrow, I guess I'll let ya know).

Also, I wasn't aware that I had to send the phone back to them. I just thought they turned it off and made it so that it couldn't be turned back on again. Was gonna sell it for parts on eBay, but oh well.

Oh man, if they would have done that, I'd have flipped.

To be honest, I'm a lil disappointed it wasn't a D2. Not to knock my OG, I've been lurking in the D2 forums and they got CM7 almost completely functional on it. People are reporting scores of 2500 on Quadrant. That would have made waiting for the next device a lot more bearable.

But I'm really quite amazed. This new D1 is leaps and bounds above my Day 1 Droid. I've already rooted and flashed LGBv2.1, and it's amazingly smooth. I mean, it was like when my OG was in it's prime, just straight kicking butt and taking names. My internet is back to where it used to be, my screen transitions are once again seamless, it's like a whole new phone. Well, I guess that's cause it is.

It does make me wonder, though. Did a year and a half of OCing start to burn out my Day 1 D1? Is that why it's performance became so dismal? Or was it really just bogged down with 20 months worth of crap? I've already loaded the majority of my apps back on this, so I dunno.

Having spent decades in the electronics field, it defies all logic to think that a circuit board with runs and chips on it can gain some sort of "memory" or be traumatized. That said, electronics is NOT an exact science... my poor "D" (that's what I call her) is getting senile as well. I can surf the web, check out a video, then hit HOME and my Live Wallpaper is GONE! Same memory available, cache clean, same apps and ROM... the LWP just vanishes! Is it theoretically possible that an electronic device can remember what has happened to it? NOPE. But does it happen anyway? YEP.

It's amazing the difference in performance between this OG and my Day 1 D1. It's like a completely diff phone. It reminds me of how my phone was a year ago.
