What a joke

But this isn't new news. His crimes were committed years ago. It almost seems like an endless rant as opposed to a deep concern. Is the discussion about his past(which neither he nor we can change) or what he is doing presently?

What do you mean "you see more people getting worked up about Vick"? You chose to post in a Vick thread, that's why you see people getting worked up about Vick. Post a thread about other athletes so we can talk about that too. You won't though, you just wanted to make a snappy comment and then leave, correct?

Snappy comment - yes. Leave - no. It's just my observation. Take it or leave it. You can interpret it any way you want. Kinda like I can chose to reply or not reply to you comments.

What happen to "this is a forum...anything goes".

Wow, so many people posting here making comments have no idea what is going on or what they're talking about. It's kind of tough to have a real debate if people have no clue and are talking out of their arse.

It was recently announced that he is for the new dog fighting bill, so yes, this is current and is not reliving old news.

With that said, "thread is not about cruelty to animals, it's about Vick killing dogs for fun" - Tommy78

Sounds like reliving the past to me. This sounds nothing like the positive he's trying to do to further correct his past transgression

He killed dogs for fun. He is for allowing dogs to kill each other for fun (or human enjoyment). I see those two topics going hand in hand.

Read the first post if you want to know what the thread is about. That's the first step when entering a thread. Try that next time.

It's what is hot in the news right now. Can you give examples of other athletes that tortured, raped, and/or murdered another human being that the public was not upset about?

OJ, Mike Tyson....there are probably more.

I didn't say people weren't upset about it. All I'm saying it just seem to me more people get worked up about crimes of animal cruelty (especially when it comes to dogs) than say other heinous crimes.

I wonder if Vick were convicted of cockfighting or torturing chickens or skinning cats, would anybody care as much.

The examples you gave... people were pretty outraged at the time and for years to come. I know for a fact OJ got 10x the publicity at the time than Vick is currently getting. Hell, Casey Anothony is pretty much a national celebrity BECAUSE of circumstances similar to what you say we should be more worried about. Enough time has gone by since those first two incidents that people have put it behind them.

If it were chickens, people would care, but not as many. I touched on this subject, and why we care so much about dogs, a handful of posts back.

"Michael Vick will announce his support for a new bill designed to fight dog and cock fighting in Washington today. The bill would make it illegal to even attend a dog or cockfight."

"But the reality is that the guy could not be doing more to atone for his past crimes and trying to prevent them from happening to anyone else."

All from the link in the OP.

What in the article says he advocates dogfighting? Not advocated, but currently supports it.

Right. He is doing so in hopes to clear his name. is that not a reasonable assumption? Without sitting down an talking to the guy, I can;t truly know his motives (and perhaps not even then). It's tough to go from a guy that tortures dogs to fighting for their cause.

Very reasonable but....... is it a bad thing to want your name clean? Is it so farfetched to believe in complete rehabilitation?

No it isn't bad to want your name clean. Complete rehab? So you are trying to tell me that this grown man thought it was cool and moral to fight, torture, and kill dogs, and once he was busted realized the error in his ways and has changed for the better? He was caught. If he doesn't come out an oppose this all eyes are on him. He'd rather save face than potentially ruin his career any further, not because he cares for the animals, but because he cars for himself.

We have used examples of rapists here. Unless there is a mental illness involved, the rapist, too, know the errors of his ways. The difference is he wasn't yet caught. Generally they all come out of the slammer saying how sorry they are and won't do it again. Sure they won't, they know being busted is a worse feeling for THEM than the pleasure they get from committing the crime. Either that, or they try and take more strict measures to keep from being caught again.

Bottom line is you don't just all of the sudden realize what an asshole you were for committing these crimes.

If he were to reread the entire thread he can see countless posts about the many reasons why he's doing this and why it is not to be believed. I don't feel like starting over again listing the reasons. If it helps any, look for my posts.

He didn't sudden realize it. Of course not. He knew what he was doing was wrong. But he served his time and is trying to make amends and spread the word about the inhumane acts he was once apart of. He's no saint by any means. But i dont see how he can ruin his career further. Had he not endorsed this bill would it have made him look worse, better, or no one would have cared? If he was still fighting dog behind closed doors and publicly bashing it, yes call him a hypocrit.

But think about the people in AA or drug addicts who turn over new leaves. Do you dismiss them as phony because they try to prevent other people from making the same mistakes they did? They knew what they were doing. Its been years, this wasn't a sudden realization

As was mentioned before, he would likely still be doing this had he not been busted. It was the fact that he did hard time that made him realize "perhaps the joy I get from torturing these creatures isn't worth sitting in jail over... so I guess if I just stop doing it, no matter how much I like it, I will be happier in the end." Give it days, months, years, etc. You don't LEARN that dousing a dog with water an electrocuting it to death is F'd up.

AA is a good analogy, but there are two types of people that enter AA. Those that are forced (read: wouldn't be there unless required) and those who's lives are so F'd up by their abuse that they either change, or die.

Football season is near us, he needs to do something positive with his name to make money. He doesn't realize that his name and dogs do not mix and is making a huge mistake. I'll say it again, one does not go from torturing dogs and being fine with it to suddenly being all about seeing dogs do well. It's in his nature and he thinks it's fine, but that is not popular with people and so he has to make it seem like he's changed his tune.

Sometimes it takes getting caught to change how a person acts. Would he still be doing what he is doing if he didn't get caught...I would probably say yes. Would we even be having this discussion if he didn't get caught? ...Nope...we would be ignorant to the fact that this man needs help and needs to be taught a lesson.

I believe that people can change.

I believe that people can change too, just not for the right reasons (in this situation). If he isn't doing what he used to do, that is physical proof of change, is it not? Does he feel it's not wrong? I don't know, but I find it hard to believe that he thought it was ok before and doesn't now. I mean did he have some sort of mental rehab? I think not. He spent a good while in the slammer and realized it wasn't worth it.
