What do I need to do to Root my SGH-T989?

Hi, I think I'm ready to take the Plunge here...I think I want to Root my SGH-T989 but am not sure where to start. I found some places that tell help you AFTER you install ICS. , However, I have gone backwards, using Odin5, to Gingerbread 2.3.6 (T989UVDLE) Kernel: 2.6.35.11.

I have a few questions:

1. What do I need to do or where to go to start this process? I have seen ATMAZZ's post http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-t-mobile-all-things-root/627099-guide-root-rom-sgh-t989.html and will try to follow this one.

2. Do I need to back up all my App Data? I may just incase

3. Do I need to clear my cache and do a Factory Reset of my Phone?

4. In the past, I have had the WiFi calling issues, basically, I can't hear someone on the other end, or they can't hear me. Also, dropping calls using Wifi. I got around this by calling T-Mobile and had them reset my BLR or HLR and haven't had too many issues. Will this help stop this?

5. I was also thinking on trying the Jedi Mind Trick, any opinions on any others?

Sorry for the many questions, but hopefully I can be sent in the right directions...

Thanks in advance!!

I've seen people say updating to the latest ICS, UVLI4, helped their calling problems. Rooting won't help with that.

Rooting won't wipe your phone and cause you to lose any apps. No you don't need to factory reset or wipe anything.

Just follow my rooting guide sticky. If you want to go to the latest ICS first, follow my Odin guide sticky in the regular Tmo forum. I would recommend you do that. Doing that will cause you to lose apps you have downloaded.

Jedi Roms are good. I've been using CM 10.1 Jellybean 4.2.2 and really like it.

Thanks! I had ICS on here and I had the calling issue really bad, which caused me to follow your post there about using Odin5 to go backwards, which was successful and later found out that the wifi calling issue has to do with their wifi calling patch....since then, I've kept the Gingerbread OS on here and once a few months or so, I call TM just to get them to reset my BLR and HLR on my phone and my wife's...in doing so, I never have that problem again...

I guess I can try the ICS upgrade again and then Root...or is it ok to Root what I have now?

Can you point me in the direction of the Mod you're using? or is the post that I have quoted you in my OP sufficient enough?

Thanks again for your help!!

You can root what you have, but if you use Odin to go to the January ICS update it will unroot you and you will have to root again.

I'm not sure which mod you're talking about?

That rom.....where did yo u find it? XDA? or here? I'm assuming CM stands for Cyanogenmod?

sorry for the dumb question, I'm still learning about Rooting...I have the itch...so I want to try it...so if this seemed dumb, it's cause I have no clue...lol

There are no dumb questions here. That's how we learn and keep from screwing up. :D

Yes, CyanogenMod. You can find a thread here. And there is a thread at XDA here.

Hey, I was wondering...I have found many download guides but is there one for the SGH-T989 specific?
I don't want to brick my phone...

I found a few different one's for this specific phone....too..but again...they are all different...telling me to download a bunch of stuff..

Hi Homeuser. I'm not sure what you mean by download guide? If you mean how to install a rom, read the second post in my Root & ROM guide.

If you mean which rom? All these in the Root Guide work on the SGH-T989 and all the ones in this XDA forum.

Before you start flashing roms, make sure you do a backup in recovery. If you ever have a problem you can restore that backup to get out of trouble.

yeah...this one and a few others I found...How to Root ICS/GB on T-Mobile Galaxy S2 SGH-T989! | Galaxy S2 Root

one of your older ones.. http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-t-mobile/628449-how-odin-any-stock-rom.html

and this one...http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-t-mobile/628449-how-odin-any-stock-rom.html

Like what kind of stuff? Usually it should just be the rom and maybe gapps.

How to Odin any Stock ROM is just for if you want, or need, to install a stock rom. Not a custom rom. The first link for the guide you posted, his method for getting into Odin download mode on the phone is incorrect for our phone. His recovery is also old. Read through this whole thread. If you have any questions let me know.

The one for Telus is the SGH-T989D. It's a good guide. Its the one I followed when I rooted my SGH-T989 about a year ago. The OP just hasn't been updated with new files in a long time.

Its ok. It can seem daunting at first and make people nervous. :) After you do it you find out its pretty easy. If you have any questions or problems I'm here to help. ;)

Thanks Atamazzz....You have helped me in the past...and yes..it's very nerve racking....this is my first smart phone...and want to dabble..and learn more..just a fraidie-cat..lol...and also, want a step by step guide...which you have provided..I'll look at this one and give it a shot!...

I did it!!!!! No issues at all....the only question I had was, I used TWRP Techerrata Downloads - Downloading openrecovery-twrp-2.4.1.0-hercules.tar
and when I preformed a back up, I checked all the boxes, not sure if I needed to do that or not, but I did..took about 264 seconds!!....lol

Great! :D

See its not so bad. I usually don't check any boxes for a backup. I just go with the default. I can't even remember what the check boxes are now. You might want to do another with just default settings and delete the first one. It will take up less room and take around 100 seconds maybe.

Now download. Titanium backup from the play store and backup your apps.

I'll do that again soon...but now I'm trying to use Titanium Back up....it's stuck in the "Asking for root rights...." mode...don't know why?....it also said, at one point, that the superuser had and error message as well, "Activity Superuser Request (in application Superuser) is not responding" force close or wait....don't now why either...did I do something wrong?...I'll reboot my phone and see if it works better....

any ideas?

No, I don't think you did anything wrong if the superuser installed without an error message. It may be because its a newer superuser file and you are on gingerbread. Let me find another superuser file for you to try.

Ok...Thanks!....

By the way, when I install the ROM's....does that delete all my data? or am I safe to try any of them without losing my data?

http://www.mrwodtke.com/android/t989_guide/su-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip

OK try this one. Download and put on your SD card. Go to TWRP, tap install and select it. You may get an abort message a couple of times. Just do it again. When it says it installed reboot and try Titanium again.

Ok...when you say go to TWRP, I'm assuming it's an app on my phone now?....lol...also, when I install the ROM's....does that delete all my data? or am I safe to try any of them without losing my data?

No, I mean you have to reboot to recovery, TWRP. Power off, hold power button and both volume buttons. When the phone vibrates let go of the power button but keep holding the volume buttons. In a few seconds you should be in TWRP recovery.
