Root What do you rid of?

argedion

The TechnoFrog
What do you get rid of when you install a new ROM
Please be specific give complete name and a breif reason why. There are a few system apps I get rid of. However, I need to get going work is calling :( so for an example I'll put this:

FeildTrial.apk | /system/app/FeildTrail.apk - I have never found a use for this and delete it upon a new Flash.

If we can keep it in the above format that would be helpful.

Part Two

What program that comes with your ROM can you not live without?

example -vtt-sprint.apk (Voice Mail) [/system/apps] - My life would be so empty if I could not get my voice mails. {ok not really but you get the drift}

Gtalk----I never use it

Honestly, thats probably about it. Most ROM's these days have most things removed for us.

If your looking for a "Safe to remove" list starting from a stock ROM theres plenty of lists over on Xda.

No I'm not I have a lot of those and there is a bunch more I end up taking out. I use Go Luncher so I get rid of a lot of widgets I don't use and other Sense stuff. I just was trying to put a list together of what people use and what they don't use like the Stock's app or the News App that comes with it. Or do people prefer to user their own that they have discovered. Its for ROM research.

Now that I've had more time to think about it:

Gtalk- dont use
Stocks
anything related to twitter
the live feed app for facebook/twitter

I don't usually remove too much:

Netflix - don't use/need it
Dev Specific apps (ie MikForums)
My Backup Pro (i use TB)

Titanium Backup Essential for any rooted phone.
Google Voice I use this for voicemail and use GV as my phone number. By using this service I can now use my TF Prime as a text message device so I don't need my phone near me.
SetCPU Some roms have built it built in but I like the newer updated setcpu.
Root Explorer Paid for it and it's one of the best file explorers around but ES File explorer is a great free file explorer
Bookmark manager Such a simple app to back up bookmarks and then when flashing a new rom, restoring the bookmarks is easy. Small footprint also.
Quick Boot Although most roms come with the added feature of hot reboot, boot to recovery, this app is simple and quick.

I to cannot live with out my titanium backup nor my RootExplorer. Both have saved me in several instances. Knowing just how good of apps they are I would have to say I would have paid twice to three times as much for them. (extremely glad it didn't)

Good to see you takirb and andy haven't seen you guys in a while lifes been keeping y'all busy huh?

I don't like TB and cannot trust it because the backup that I made got corrupted. I have this pet peeve that when a program goes wrong the first time I use it, I never use it again. I like mybackup pro, has a friendly user interface for me to backup and restore all my setting, even on a different phone.

Out of curiosity, when removing some of these apps, do you guys remove the widgets to?

Removing apps especially system apps is iffy. It's Always best to freeze them for a few days to see if they can be safely removed. My suggestion is to create a folder called removed on the sdcard and in that folder create a folder of the rom your on and then placed removed apps in there. So technically it's not a delete its a move into complete dormancy. Admit-tingly however Certain apps I know I can rid of I do. And yes this does include widgets.

Thanks man, yea, they've got me slammed at work on a project due in April, long gone are the days of surfing the web all 8hrs lol

I hear ya and completely understand. I've been getting slammed at work lately as well. Then I have to come home and do some yard work so that we can have that done. So not getting the time in I would like but trying to manage a little anyway's.
