What Happened to Tapatalk

Why do I even bother to address things around here? I'm not going to type it all out again. Look on one of the original TT threads for my "excuses" as to why we're not using it anymore.

(thanks for the link, Slug)

While I respect the decision you guys made on this, it still doesn't add up. If this vulnerability is still out there, why are there so many other forums that still use TT (including the one that discovered the initial vulnerability in the first place)? Not to mention the fact that XDA uses TT as the basis for their own app...

If it really is something that hasn't been fixed yet, have you reported this new vulnerability to TT so they can fix this one too?

On a different note, if TT really isn't coming back I guess I'll be forced to download the phandroid app...which is something I probably would have done anyway to read the news, I just wish I wasn't basically being forced to do so.

I read the posts, but not picking up the core reason for leaving Tap off now, besides the app you have coming out. The security was corrected. If anything, the posts seem to assert it would not be turned off, but it was.

I am sorry if my reading skills have imploded. If the core reason is your own app, just fess up, since Apple has been doing this stuff for years :) ;)

Seems you would want as many connection methods as possible, since most if not all are still traffic and hits. If by Tap or by your own (a month away) app. What is the difference?

Are you folks channeling Steve Job's thought patterns? ;)

Perhaps you can smooth this out with no Tap and offer a black background page option with green or white font options? Just a thought.

Let's just say I think the perspective of The Closet episode from Southpark fits my perspective of him and his work.

Oh , I tried to read it, still have it and dictionary of made up words around here somewhere.
Though battlefield earth is one of my all time fav books.

now back to the show... point was made that one of the staff accounts was hacked? that was something I admit I did not consider, and missed in forum thread, yes indeed that could have wrecked havoc on the forums. It is understandable and expected to "fix" the situation. I thank you for your actions on discovering that problem.
I do wonder if AF will be going with new app perhaps untested , would it be more secure than one that has been out with security bugs fixed? Or will tap be reconsidered if/when it passes AF in-house testing?
That is why I bought tap, less hassle, all forums in one place easy to goto and post. I am not big on posting from my phone are there other similar apps for posting?

Not ATM. Tap is popular because it works well and is efficient for viewing forums. Not to mention the black background and display format.

Tap is a simple and efficient app that I use for all forums except this one rite' cheern';):)

You caught the made up words too in Dianetics :) B.E. is a good book, but the other stuff besides the book as it's own thing..... no comment in order not to offend Tom Cruise & company ;)

If i could get "down ranked" I know this post would be, but I will say anyway.

I am sad to say it, but i think way too many people have a sense of entitlement going on here. The fact is, the forum is privately owned and operated, and is not ours to say how it should be run. Yes, it is a bummer that something you bought isn't compatible anymore here, but sometimes that is the way of things. Perhaps they could have gone with a little more notice before removing it, but from the sounds of things, it wasn't really wanted in the first place; its not surprising that a serious issue would kill it.

On that note.... really guys? The spirit of Android? Look guys.. its a forum, and even with Android being open, not everything is there to do with as we please (especially with VZ and HTC having some say). The spirit of android is to provide a new smartphone experience, through a generally open software base. How that relates to how an android forum should operate is beyond me...

Sense of entitlement, my behind - my problem with it is that they keep saying there's an open exploit. By all accounts that exploit has been closed, and there are many, MANY forums who have TT enabled, INCLUDING the one who INITIALLY DISCOVERED the exploit. I have no such sense of entitlement, I would just like a real explanation as to why it's no longer available.

...AND, if there really is still an open exploit, I would hope the owners of AF have notified TapaTalk of the vulnerability so they can fix it.

Will everyone who is complaining actually read the posts that have been provided? Linked to above:

Sorry all, be mad at me if you want. Blame it on various theories if you like. The bottom line is - Rob didn't want it to begin with. I convinced him to do it, and now that this has hit there will be no convincing to go back. Knowing that I personally was a target, I have no desire to fight for it.

I thoroughly understand and sympathize with this position. I have not implemented Tapatalk on my own forum because I believe a good mobile skin is a better way to manage the forum universally, across all mobile platforms and without having people download/pay for/use a separate app.

I am grudgingly considering Tapatalk because it does not appear that I have the resources to invest in a mobile skin right now. However, if I had tentatively installed Tapatalk and had a major security flaw discovered, I would probably permanently remove it as well. I don't think most of you guys realize the amount of time it takes to moderate and run a forum like this - and the last thing I need is to introduce a place for a security hole to be found. I have enough places where security holes can exist. To add another one, and one where a major security flaw was already found, is not something I want to consider.

Busy people tend to do things to consolidate what they have to keep track of and reduce the stuff they have to worry about. This is clearly one of those things. Grudgingly giving something a shot and having it bite you is not a recipe for second chances.

Actually, I DO know the amount of time it takes to moderate and run a forum like this. It's part of my job on a daily basis (I work for a social media company).

...and I wish YOU would have read MY prior posts in this thread before quoting me and throwing out the "Will everyone who is complaining actually read the posts that have been provided?"

Of course if there's an open exploit, they have every right to shut it down and not turn it back on. However, it doesn't answer the last question I asked (see below):

Excellent! So you know. So imagine doing your job, every day, only without pay - or with a tiny amount of pay. Wouldn't you do what you can to limit the amount of time you had to spend thinking about it? That's what the mods at most forums do.

The monetizing of forums is fairly complex. There are a lot of resources needed to manage large forums but not a whole lot of dollars to compensate those resources.

Of course if there's an open exploit, they have every right to shut it down and not turn it back on. However, it doesn't answer the last question I asked (see below):

I don't see an "open" exploit. I see exploits referred to in the past. The timeline is a little unclear but that's not really the point. The point is: once bitten, twice shy. The exploit being fixed or not fixed doesn't change the fact that it appears that the decision-maker was talked into something he didn't entirely like, and then had to scramble when there was a problem with it. That would lead me towards flipping the switch, too.

When I was first getting into computers, I bought a lot of Western Digital hard drives. They always worked really well for me. My friend said how great and how cheap his Maxtor drives were, so I bought one - and it died in 6 months. Sure, it was an isolated incident and I have no evidence to think it wasn't a fluke - but do you think I bought Maxtor anytime soon after that?

The timeline isn't at all unclear, and that IS the point.

Everyone has asked why they disabled access based on a past exploit that has since been fixed. Quoting Phases, from the link that slug posted...

4. Yes, the post on tapatalk's site was much earlier than mine. Yes there was an exploit that was "fixed". However, it was not fixed completely and was tested in house and verified to still work. It was verified to still work while learning AF was about to be a target - including admin accounts.

That indicates the exploit is still out there, which makes my questions valid IMO.

Then why are other forums not blocking it too? Androidcentral, Tmonews, maemo talk, XDA, several other Android sites... why this one?

AF should just fess up and say they want people to use their app and move on with it. Well, that and add a black background with choice of white green fonts to their forum for user selection :) ;) Maemo Talk has this, but Android is not exactly their focus... It is Goldmember devices (Nokia).

Its the straw that broke the camels back. The fact that OUR administration was targeted should make you furious and supportive, not hateful and bitter. I personally beg all who want to leave to stay, please stay.

What are you talking about? I've said repeatedly that if there's an open exploit, OF COURSE they were right to shut it down. I don't think any of us have been "hateful and bitter" at all, not in the least...

What I DO want to know is if there really IS an open exploit (seems unlikely since there are so many other forums out there running TT without incident, and there's nothing I could find on the web about it), and if so have they shared it with the owners of TT so that it can be fixed? I don't think those are unreasonable questions...

I think it comes to the fact that they reluctantly started using it and after this they are unwilling to use it again.

I hope nobody leaves because of this.

The timeline isn't at all unclear, and that IS the point.

The post you referenced was a couple weeks ago and used words in the past tense. I don't know if that means they still think a problem exists, or if it has been fixed.

What I am saying is, the post by Phases clearly indicates that it doesn't matter if an exploit exists. It only matters that someone who was leery about using Tapatalk got bit by an exploit, and it will naturally sour him to it.

Inquiring about the exploits and whether or not they are still open or resolved or whatever is fine. But Phases provided a very real, reasonable reason why the guy in charge isn't going to change his mind about Tapatalk and it doesn't relate to whether the exploit is fixed.

You sir, make some very excellent points, and I applaud you for actually understanding what Phases was trying to get across. Rob (aka the owner of this place) didn't want TT. Phases talked him into it, so Rob did it. Rob got targeted via this security exploit - someone who didn't want it in the first place. Rob deleted TT due to that attack, and thereafter did not want it (remember, he did not want it in the first place). If it just so happened that the attack succeeded, can you imagine how much damage it would do to this forum? This is ROB'S investment and someone obviously tried to tear that down. So regardless of whether the security flaw is still present or not (which, I believe has been fixed), is irrelevant. Someone used something the owner didn't want in to begin with, to try to take down a thing hes put alot of time and effort into. Put yourself in his shoes and try to see it from his point of view. If I worked this hard to build a project such as this forum, to make it the largest Android forum on the internet, just to have someone try to blow it up, I damn sure am not going to take any more chances regardless of whether the method of "blowing up" was fixed or not. This is laid out pretty clear in Phase's post and if you haven't even bothered reading it (and by reading the posts on this page, it seems like ONLY binary visions actually attempted it), I encourage you to do so over, and over, and over, and over, and over again until you get it. It really a simple explanation and he has already put forth that the whole security debacle is not in-play right now.

If you feel like Tapatalk is completely, absolutely, undoubtedly necessary in your forum browsing, then thats nothing I nor anyone else can control, and I wish you the best of luck in your decision. However, by to complain about it to us (whether that be mods/guides, who are all helping run this place on a volunteer basis and are not compensated, or other members), who have no say in the matter anyways (Rob put in his money to this forum as initial capital thus has the final word) and seemingly using it as a threat as if the forum will see a dramatic drop in traffic is pretentious.

Woop

That is the to the point answer. Boss got burned. Boss says no more TT.
End of story.

*I prefer this type answer, facts and short

**thanks Woop, you should end this thread , answer all can understand has been given

This thread has outlived its useful life. The original question has been answered, explanation given, background provided, and the dead horse is sufficiently beaten.

Cheers,
