Help What is up with the wifi connection on the GN

Is it my device, defective? My router? What?

My Tmobile GS2 would download a 5 mb file in 1 second via my wifi, so does my PS3, my 2 laptops, my tv, etc. GN is downloading 300 kb/s at that rate.
This phone struggles to download, it doesn't show a full signal, even from 15 ft away.

NOT BASHING. I'm freaking out, and trying to figure out if I should exchange the phone. I just got it 4 days ago, and I'm not happy with the wifi speeds....along with the battery, but that's another story.

What's your take?

The wifi radio on my gnex is the best out of all the smartphones I've used, so yes i would say it's defective

Well I don't get quite that slow of speeds, but I just grabbed a file from my server on my local WLAN and it only pulled it at about 3MB/s (18 Mbps). I was expecting it to be faster, honestly, but it's still not that bad. hmm.

I did a speedtest.net run and it was only able to pull 24 Mbps (normally power boost on Comcast from my laptop would put me near 60+ Mbps). I know there's some wifi performance patch in cm9 (or was it liquid?) I'll have to see if AOKP can pull it in.
 
My wifi is awful. I have a 30mb internet connection and I'm lucky to get 5-10mb down with the GN. The speedtest graph looks like mountains with lots of ragged peaks and valleys on download and smooth across on upload. Turning off bluetooth helps a bit. I used to be able to connect at 5ghz and that helped a lot but after the last OTA the GN will no longer see the 5ghz signal. Bottom line is the GN wifi has a lot of issues and is very sensitive to the particular router and a/p you happen to be using:eek:
 
There's nothing wrong with my GN. I've never had a Wifi issue at all. Sitting at my desk...
My desktop pulls 15.5 Mbps hardwired.
My Tablet pulled 14.8, 14.9, 15.4 Mbps via WiFi.
My GN pulled 15.2, 14.8, 14.8 Mbps via Wifi

I've always, always, always found WiFi issues were caused by the router. Some routers just don't play nice with some devices.
 
I would say that it is either a defective phone or some sort of hardware incompatibility. My Nexus doesn't get along very well with my Belkin router, but it works really well with my Linksys. That said, I get 6-8 Mbs on the Belkin and 26 - 30 Mbps on the Linksys.
 
Yes i would call verizon and have them switch it out for you. Unless its the router like metioned before. My nexus dosent have that problem.
 
I haven't measured Wifi speed on mine. But I feel like it's about 70~80% of my home internet speed on average. That's fast enough for me. I'm very happy with Wifi on my nexus. It switches on/off fast, reception range is more than long enough.

I guess OP's issue is either Wifit setup with his router or bad unit. If it's hard to figure out what's wrong with Wifi setting, I suggest testing it on some places like Starbucks with open Wifi service to see if it's having the same issue.

i didn't mean in a speed bragging way... that was my result on the speedtest app... i guess i should have elaborated that even with less than full bars, wifi performance still seems to be pretty good to me...

i guess i'm not understanding the nature of the initial concern about wifi performance, as it seems plenty fast and useable... :confused:

maybe less bars showing than on my iphone sitting right beside it, but performance seems to be equal.
 
Your just testing your burstability at a given moment which really isn't a great measure of overall performance. I can have 20Mbps Speedtest.net results and still am constantly buffering watching HD Youtube vids. This is not a burstability issue, it's a stability issue. I can shut off my WiFi and watch HD youtube all day without a glitch on HSPA but as soon as I get on any WiFi this thing starts buffering. Also I can't be even slightly out of range or I loose WiFi completely, even though the guy with the iPhone right next to me is surfing with no issues.

And the worst thing is I can't even join my 802.11n Network running off my Asus RT-N66U Dual Band 450Mbps AP. I've tried everything and the Nexus will not work. It joins for a split second then the WiFi shuts off and I can't even see the SSID any more. I manage the wireless infrastructure for a large enterprise so I'm no noob when it comes to this topic and I've talked to 3 other people with Nexus's and they all have the same issue. This is not the phone of choice when it comes to WiFi. I think something needs fixing here and I hope it's something an update can cure.

Very well stated. I can connect to any 2.4ghz router or AP but not without buffering and disconnects as you stated. In fact I'll be lucky if this tapatalk post even sends without having to reset the phone's wifi connection.
 
No issues at all with my wifi, definitely try switching out the phone. Constantly connected and I get about 10-18 mbps while being kind of far from the router in a neighborhood with a lot of interference. If the replacement is just as bad I highly recommend you check the wireless channels to make sure you are not getting interference. There are also rare cases where certain routers don't like certain devices, and in general the reception of mobile devices is crap compared to desktops and laptops with built in wifi.

Almost forgot if you are not happy with the phone overall return it or you will regret it. There are some people that constantly moan about their issues but kept the phone when they could have returned it. It's a bad bet to count on software to fix things, there are a lot of us who had no issues at all of any kind. If I had some issues I would not have hesitated to return the phone asap.

Yeah I wonder if it's a hardware issue, too, because my original gnex when back at my in-laws' house was horrible. It'd drop connection frequently, the speeds were erratic, etc. This one I have now works great with my airport extreme at home. So either it was a compatibility issue with my in-laws' router, or that gnex was faulty.
 
No problems streaming, never buffering issues. It has always worked fine for me.

Maybe try a new phone.
 
I have to say I was really surprised to see how fast the Gnex is compared to the EVO on my WiFi. I'm guessing a problem is either a bad phone or bad AP.
 
The only time I ever had significant issues over wifi was in my university dorm. Granted I was sharing 2 AP's with 40 students on the floor through cement brick walls. And to be fair, my laptop had issues as well.
 
Ya I get better speeds through Verizon than I do through Comcast cable from a lynksys router 15 ft away.

Buffering happens. Especially when I try to watch something like YouTube in a decent quality. I don't get it. I checked the channel my router on and its fine, not the problem.
