What phone are you ditching for the EVO?

You're pretty far off...Instinct was marketed to be the Sprint iPhone killer at that point, not just a mediocre feature phone. Of course that was 2 years and hindsight makes it seem ridiculous, but at least that's how I felt about it. And I think the Instinct is actually comparable to the iPhone 3g spec-wise, it just had horrendous software and interface really. I'm willing to say that 2 years ago if you went Sprint the only options for a smartphone were a blackberry (and one or MAYBE two variants), or an Instinct. I don't know if Sprint even had any htc phones at that point truthfully. I may have been ignorant to their selection, but that's at least how I recall it. Of course at that time I didn't bother to do the research like I do now. At that point in time it was the iPhone and EVERYBODY trying to play catch up.

Edit: The era of the Instinct only lasted maybe 6 months until the Pre was announced too. Of course the Pre wouldn't come out until June 09, but even in February it was as if every instinct owner was ready to jump.

Edit 2: Here's a video review comparing the Instinct the iPhone. I hope my $200 goes a little further this year :D

You're correct. Sprint had a BIG marketing campaign for the Instinct (I specifically remember the modern day Bonnie and Clyde style commercial, where the wife makes a purchase from her phone, but it allowed the cops to find them).

Nontheless, you were definitely not told about the other Smart phones/PDA phones available to you at the time. The Mogul and The Palm Treo were the best smartphones/PDA phones in the Sprint stable at that time. Thing is, those were marketed more towards business clients more-so than the general public.

Palm Pre. I've been one of the lucky few with no problems, but it's still time for a faster phone.

It really surprised me to see that most of the posts in this thread mentioned "Palm Pre". Is it that bad phone? I mean, my elder brother received his X10 yesterday and my upgrade is due, so I thought that instead of having the same thing I should go for something different and Palm Pre was the first option. But I'm confused to see many people turning to Android are previously Palm owners.

Can you please tell me why you are leaving Pre?

Never had the device, but my observation is that:

-Initial Palm Pres were absolutely horrible..crappy crappy build quality - very "cheap"
-The next generation of them fix all of the issues
-Everybody loves WebOS, but the hardware is just lacking compared to a device like the Evo.

I really believe WebOS has the most potential for a mobile os but the hardware quality of the Pre I find lacking. I'm on my third since last June and even this one has an issue with the keyboard backlight.

If I get the EVO I will miss things about WebOS.

i think the pre is a good phone and i'm sure most people here would agree, but it just lacks in what it can do, small app store (though growing) and WebOS is cool and all but it's no android... i personally think of android as just plain fun as hell, while WebOS more of a mom's type of OS, does what she needs but not much else, but what it does do it does pretty decently

Interesting that you use the "Mom" analogy. I'm trying to find a phone that'll be as simple as possible for my Mom to use. She currently has the Instinct and has absolutely NO clue how to use it or what to do and she always pocket dials people. Considering she had a hard time with the Instinct, do you think the Palm Pre would be just as confusing for her? She's not Tech Savvy at all, but loves texting, emailing, and surfing the internet, so I'm trying to decide if the Palm Pre would be the best fit for her or if I should get her something more basic like the LG Elite.

Mostly hardware for me. If you felt it in your hand and have been handling it for a while....then all of a sudden hold a Nexus 1, Droid, or even iPhone in your hand - you would understand. It's just not a "solid" phone. WebOS is GREAT but its still in the process where its working out bugs that should have been addressed in the design/testing stages. Battery life is horrible (1-2 at most compared to my OLDER Treo 4-5 days).

I'll be ditching a Samsung flip phone that's old enough to still have the Cingular logo on it if that tells you anything. Can't wait for my first smart phone!

Bigger screen and faster processor are the two biggest things for me. I like webOS but android has much more dev support.

A few reasons...

  • I have a short attention span and a yearly upgrade so I am looking for something new and improved
  • hardware/build quality is mediocre
  • software needs better optimization/GPU acceleration to be smooth
  • less available software.

For those of you who are considering the EVO but might be a little hesitant about the possible price, look at Sprint's website about trading in your current phone. I know I will probably go this route with my Pre.

I wouldnt do that with a pre, I sold my pre on craigslist for 225

Ignorance yes as you had the Centro, Treo Pro and Touch Pro out there.

EVO will replace my wireless Sprint Data Card 595U. I'll keep my Blackberry as my main. The EVO will now be my WiFi hotspot in the center of my home.

Thank you Sprint!

What are you ditching for the EVO?

Me: my HD Flip Mino Video Camera, portable FM radio, Palm Pre, Garmin GPS, and my old Casio Exilim 5MP camera :)

I won't sell the Casio Exilim camera until I test the Evo's camera. It might take better pictures than the evo. It doesn't mean if the Evo has 8MP it will outperform a dedicated 5MP digital camera.

Because I think the Evo4g will be a better phone and I love to upgrade. The palm pre for me has been a decent phone..I haven't had much in the way of issues and the updates have helped..but I think the evo looks like an awesome phone with more features. :D
