What phone to get after Droid?

I got my Eris new from Amazon for $10. Got this Droid for $50 off Craigslist. I guess I'll be buying used phones from here on out. I can't afford $200 for an upgrade.

I paid the $200 upgrade for the DROID. I might be willing to pay up to $400 if my next phone had 1) lte 2) high speed dual core / quad core processor 3) 2400+ mAh battery, and 4) unlocked bootloader, and 5)1+ gb ROM space and 2+ gb app storage space.

Anyone? :p

Good one, John! I'm in the same boat. Cyanogen is really keeping my Droid alive and well until something hits Verizon (I'm already at an upgrade point anyway). Basically this is how it'll go, and I think I'll give all options until Oct/Nov:
Bionic - only if unlocked bootloader (and it has to come out that way, no waiting for it like Atrix)
GSII - only if LTE. I already have it all over DC, and if I'm going to have the phone for 2 years, it needs to be 4G.
Nexus - this would be my best choice. However, I'm still skeptical it'll come to V, and before Christmas. Also, if it is 4.5", I might have a hard time with something that big.

Good points. This helps me hone in on what I want to get.

Fortunately, I'm also already at upgrade point (7/7) but I cannot afford it for another couple of weeks (lack of fundage).

At this point it seems that in the next month my options are going ot be limited, so I might purchase one upgrade on a different line, use it until something better comes out, then upgrade on another line.

However, there is one thing I am slightly worried about:

2 lines have data, one does not - obviously, if I don't hurry up and get the third line on a data package then I'm going to get shafted when I perform the upgrade on that line, so I'm going to call them today for that. I want all three lines to be grandfathered into unlimited as long as they can be.

If I perform an upgrade on either of the two lines with data, I will definitely be able to stay grandfathered in unlimited data plans, right? Even if I get an LTE-ready device?

i am with you on that I would hate to leave Verizon now that i am grandfathered into 3g/4g unlimited for 30 dollars. If the rumors are true each carrier will get their own ice cream flagship android phone. So hopefully it will be stock and not any bullshit bloat ui

John, I wish you luck on getting that line into unlimited data, but I wonder if it's impossible now? I guess for me, I'm a lightweight and don't use that much, so 2gig is actually acceptable if/when that ever happens (though with LTE, I've heard the usage is much higher). I've no idea if the third line will get upgraded/grandfathered. You'll definitely have to talk to Verizon directly about that. As far as existing data plans, I'm pretty sure you're fine. There hasn't been any talk/leaks about them killing it in the future, but I imagine by next year, we'll all be on tiered plans.

Yeah, read your topic already - but not sure if I am going ot be doing an upgrade just yet as I am in the middle of a compute crisis with 3 fried HDs....

I'm pissed at motorola for really killing their "droid" line of phones.

How the OG Droid went from industry leader, to middle of the road with the Droid 3 is just infuriating.

If the Droid 3 had Bionic, SGII, or Nexus Prime specs, it wouldn't even be a question what the next phone I would be getting was.

That being said, I'm about to bolt for Sprint. Every phone on Verizon is just a day late, and a dollar short these days. :(

I wholeheartedly agree with you about Verizon's lack of appealing high end phones. Unfortunately Sprint offers poor and spotty service in my area.

The coverage in my area for sprint isn't bad - but I really hate the thought of giving up Verizon's LTE.

If i'm not grandfathered into an unlimited plan when I upgrade, it doesn't really matter what phones they offer, anyway.

Been a Verizon customer for 8 years. That being said, they have screwed up beyond belief this past year.

If you have an unlimited Data plan before 7 July 2011 YOU'RE GRANDFATHERED IN unless you cancel that plan. For now, anyway.

GOD if it wasnt for me being grandfathered into the 30 dollar 3g/4g data package i would be leaving verizon at the end of my contract i agree with your statement there. The OG Droid is a great example of what the Droid line should had stayed like. But not as soon as they got smart they blaster each off like it was NASCAR car. And for some god damn reason any android that comes out for sprint that is good comes out 2 or 3 months late to Verizon. look at the leaked image of a Verizon version of a sprint Samsung epic 4g, that was released August 10, 2010!!!. Seriously why this late??? For real. Now I cant really be mad at the late release of the galaxy s 2 because its every carrier. But i am sure its going to be the last the of the big four to come out with the function. Cause god forbid it does not come out with every VZW app on it. Sorry for the rant. It is just now I am stuck. Get the GSII or wait till the nexus prime, plus or whatever its going to be called. And even then knowing if it is not going to be on Verizon. Cause I do not think Verizon has any intention of having stock android smartphone. So either waiting to having to settle with another ice cream sandwich phone that has thier own pre installed UI. I am just scared that the galaxy S2 is coming too late to the US. When was it released? Spring? and its coming out at the end of summer? I dont know is it worth renewing a two year contract with Verizon for a late phone. Yes it has the best specs at this moment. But you how fast technology is when it comes to your android phone. One month later after you got your OG Droid it was already not the best anymore. But what does matter is the mod community behind. What is really holding me back from ruling out the gs2 is the fact that it will have a huge mod community behind it. But so will the nexus 3 (hopefully it comes out to verizon, but who knows, cant not wait just on a what if). Again sorry for this long rant.

I'm going in tomorrow to get my Incredible 2. I thought about going with the Droid 3 or Bionic, but since Motorola just doesn't seem to want to appeal to the dev crowd, I'm leaving the Motorola line.

I'm super excited about this phone. My father has one and it is really nice.

I was in the store today, and as usual, the CSRs there talked to me like I don't know anything. I really need to get a name tage made that says "I am John Galt." and has a QR code to my profile on here...So, I'm now here to blow off some steam.

Looked that the D3 - looks nice, like the keyboard, but when I went to running services, it said 267 MB used and 108 free. WTF??????????????????????????????? Are you seriously F*****g S******g me? 2 years later, and we have phones that have 1-2 GB of internal memory, and this POC comes with a whopping 384MB? Who's bright idea was that? No way in hell am I getting that device.

I saw the LG device that has 16 GB onboard - wow, that one figure alone made me drool. Then I remembered - oh, it's an LG. Looks like I am not upgrading anytime soon. I don't think the Bionic is really going to impress me, and that I'm going ot be stuck waiting for the SGIIS to *finally* come out as well. *Sigh*

I don't know how you feel about HTC, but I must say that the Inc2 is absolutely, well for lack of better words, incredible... LOL

I love it! 784.83 of 1162.35MB internal memory free, 142MB of 603MB RAM free, 16GB SD card, Sense 2.1, GB 2.3.3, and more.

I can play Angry Birds without a single hiccup, dungeon hunters without a single hiccup or f/c (on Droid 1 I had non-stop F/C's), and much more. This phone flies and is super smooth. It is completely rootable and romable as is and HTC has promised to release a software update to allow the bootloader to be unlocked by the end of the 3rd quarter and have even sent an unlockable bootloader to Canada already.

I never really used the physical keyboard and the difference in thickness of the two phones is so much better. Even though the screen is only 10ths of an inch larger, it feels like it is a good 5-6 inches larger! The screen is super crisp and bright and the blacks are almost perfect.

It feels well built like the OG Droid, but yet isn't as heavy.

All in all, this phone is incredible and I am more than happy with my switch!

I highly suggest you go to the store and man-handle the Inc2 for a while, I'm sure you will love it.

And as for the CSRs, I went into the store Sat and the guy told me that he had only been there for 3 months. He then proceeded to tell me that he has only ever owned blackberrys, but that I had no idea what I was talking about when I told him that you can bypass the sign in by pressing the 4 corners. He then took my ROOTED OG Droid to try and transfer the contacts, against by suggestions, and proceeded to ask me why the battery and signal bars were blue. I told him that I was a developer and that was a theme of my own (I may have lied a little... The battery icon is mine and I made a metamorph for it, but the rest was DC11). He then decided that he wanted to listen to my instructions and I left happy.

So, after all that, my point is, check out the Inc2 and see what you think and don't ever let the CSRs try to act like they know more than you. Use your knowledge and show them who actually knows more... LOL
