What phone to get after Droid?

So my Droid today started acting up. As in the screen thinks I'm touching it when I'm really not. I may have to use my upgrade even though I wanted to save it until the end of the year for something better or switch carriers depending on if the Nexus goes to AT&T or Verizon.

What is everyone's advice on my current situation? Should I use my 2 yr now? Pay full retail and keep my 2 yr? Or try to fix my Droid? (not sure how)

Coming from someone who would NEVER buy full-retail, I'd just use the upgrade. You have a pretty good array of phones available right now (although some biggies are still yet to be seen). But it all depends on what you are wanting in a phone. Do you need a physical keyboard? Dual-core? 4G LTE? (etc)? These qualifiers will help us give you the best advice on wether to buy now or wait.

I am also using the droid and coming up on free upgrade offer in july. My droid works fine, but I'm concerned about high radiation and would like a performance upgrade. Also, there seems to be a multitouch issue on the droid, I'm noticing it trying to play rhythm games. Just plain need the new hardware. I do like my keyboard tho.

Unlike the guy above, I would consider any option for my future plan. I'm thinking about waiting for contract to expire. In the end I don't need 400 mins talk. I'm actually even considering trying to use the internet only for communication. If I can rely mostly on wifi I should be fine.

I'm. Actually planning on purchasing a chromebook, but I'm not sure whether or not to get 3g. I think I would like a phone plan, but very limited and cheap would be okay. I'm thinking about using something along the lines of nge or psp phone with android.

Anywyas, upgrade in july, contract til november, no idea what I'm gonna do.

I don't know about you folks, but I'm holding out for the Samsung Function coming in Q3. Samsung just sent the Galaxy S II (called the Function on Verizon) to CyanogenMod for development, and it doesn't get any better than that. The SGS2 is my DREAM machine - just like the Droid was back in 2009 - and if my humble little Droid can hold out a few more months I can finally retire it with dignity. I'll save it to show my grandkids the phone that started the smartphone revolution :)

Just checked out the Function and it looks good. I will for sure have to keep it in mind. BTW do you still hang around the UD forums?
Since the Droid3 is looking like it wont have 4g, I'm going with the Bionic. New leaks just came out today so hopefully it will be coming out soon.

If it has root and unlocked bootloader I'll consider it.

Relying mostly on Wifi can be hard to do depending on where you are. For me, it would be very hard to do. I have the Cr-48 Chromebook and yes they are nice but I really couldn't see it replacing my Droid for communication.

The fact that Samsung sent out the SGS2 to CyanogenMod speaks volumes to just how important the dev community is to Android. Motorola, you listening?

I'm in desperate need to get two new phones, and I'm trying to hold out for the SGS2 or Bionic. It's really hard to do when you've got two phones that are starting to impact your daily routine negatively. Our phones are becoming a liability.

Ideally, what I'd love is to replace my OG and the woman's DInc with the Bionic and SGS2 respectively. Talk about a dream team. Problem is, and I know this is going to be the case, I kinda prefer everything about the Bionic and I know the woman is gonna prefer the Function. But, I'm gonna want to root my heart away, and the woman doesn't want root on it at all. It's quite the quandary. And I don't even know what a quandary is!

BTW do you still hang around the UD forums?

No, Schwarz, I used to follow the UD forums religiously until I became resigned to the fact that my OG Droid will not run well on ANY iteration of Gingerbread. I'm still desperately trying to find the last nightly of UD2.5, but otherwise I won't be able to play with any new UD ROMs until the next phone.

Have you tried the new Project Elite? Its the only GB ROM that likes my phone. But this one actually loves it! It runs perfect!

Lude, I tried many different GB ROMs (not necessarily PE) and it wasn't ROM-specific. My particular problem - and the ONLY problem - was that Gingerbread stripped the tags off 419 of my songs! That's nearly half my collection on the phone, and the SAME SONGS lost the tags every time, on every ROM. Short of trying to reload and re-tag hundreds of songs, I found that the path of least resistance was to give up on Gingerbread :(

Now my concern going forward is that eventually I'm going to get a new phone... and at that point I may have to re-do all my music (I sure hope not). Looking at a projected Q3 release of the Function, it makes no sense to do it twice, if that becomes the case. Besides, do I really NEED Gingerbread that badly? My answer is "no". Froyo serves my purpose nicely for the time being, but I do appreciate your input and recommendation :)

I understand completely about the issue you're having. I have 2093 songs on my phone now. And yes, Froyo is a perfectly good version. Gingerbread really doesn't bring that much more to the table. Maybe someone will release the actual perfect 2.3 ROM before development of this phone dies. :)

Me too. But UD hasn't been active at all lately so I switched to CM. I PM'ed on the UD forums about the ViewSonic tab before. The latest CM ROM worked perfectly until Sunday then the touch screen started being glitchy.

I think I will wait for the Function. I just hope that my Droid will last that long.

Mostly in the same boat as you guys. My Droid is really loving LGB 1.8, and the kernel provided is sweet. However, there are definitely times when it gets super bogged down (data heavy apps, multitasking). My biggest concern is if/when the Function or whatever they call it hits Verizon, is it going to be outdated? The Bionic will likely be locked down, so I won't touch it. I guess it's just a wait and see game now as nothing currently can sway me (from Verizon at least).

Any phone we get will likely become obsolete well in advance of our 2-year contract end, especially with the Function being released so close to CES 2012. But if we sit on the sidelines watching and waiting for the "ultimate" device, we'll have our poor little Droids forever since (a) technology is changing so much, and (b) the RATE of change is increasing at staggering speed. Shame on Verizon for dropping 1-year contracts!

AT some point, folks, we've got to just jump in and then patiently wait 2 years for the NEXT hot thing... which will probably be a chip in our brains or something LOL

Well guys, after seeing the videos of the droid 3 and how it still has the motoblur on it. I realized that i will have to leave motorola behind, htc announced that it will have unlocked bootloaders, and samsung sent a galaxy s II to the cyanogenmod. And the specs on the phone is really compelling to me. I am able to upgrade on july 6 and as much as i want a keyboard i wont mind letting go for galaxy s II. and just twenty minutes ago Verizon has confirmed that its coming out this july :)

Verizon Confirms July Launch Window for Samsung Galaxy S II

I wish Motorola would follow with the unlocked bootloaders. I would so stick behind getting another moto phone but whats more important to me is the mod community behind my next phone.

I love my OG Droid it was my second android phone and its been so good to me had it since nov 6 5 54am and it is going to be hard to let go.

Havi, you just made my day! :D

Now it's a mad scramble to move money around so I can buy this thing on Launch Day - if not preorder it! That and the car dock, the media dock, the car charger, the... the... whatever else I can think of

Wow, that was the same issue you had back in the LG Dare days. lol

The Samsung Function forum is awash with speculation that, since the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is being released imminently, this is a VZW cover-up to hide the Function's actual July release. We know Big Red likes to keep their phones close to the vest until just before release, and this may just be damage control. Speculation, of course... but it adds fuel to the fire. We may STILL get it next month :)
