What phone to get after Droid?

Sept is just fine for me.....I can upgrade at the end of Sept. Looks like I may have some choices... or I can wait to see what comes out for the holidays.
 
Word on the street is that AT&T isn't getting a keyboard variant of the SGII after all, just another Samsung keyboard slider.
 
BGR is reporting this morning that Google intends to turn out devices running Ice Cream Sandwich in October. Now with the Bionic, and the SG2 being slated to drop early September, this is yet another variable to consider in the never ending "should I wait just a little longer" argument.:confused:

I cannot imagine, with the Stratosphere's rumored specs, that it would not be able to run ICS... either with an OTA update or a custom ROM. How long can my OG Droid possibly hold out? It's a delicate balance of timing; wait if you like, take the plunge if you must. There are benefits and disadvantages either way.

THIS. I was so excited when I got my droid after never having a smart phone or even a decent dumb phone. Got it last summer for $50 at Wal-Mart (knew to check there cause I worked in their phone center back in high school). At first it seemed like the miracle gadget but over the last 12-14 months or so, it has gradually become bogged down to the point that I salivate when I watch my friends with iPhone 4's and other newer phones cruise right through every menu and touch interface with zero lag, perfect responsiveness, smooth animations, etc. Lately my touchscreen has been going wild and I've been moments away from a trip to a Verizon store, but the cost of the phones has been a seriously inhibitory factor.

Basically, I'm waiting on the SGS II, specs for a legitimate iPhone 5, or the next hot dual-core, 4g, super slab.
 
And right now Verizon is doing a "buy one, get one free" deal on both the Droid X2 and Droid 3. Considering (1) both my wife and I are going to need replacements come November, and (2) I'll never, ever be caught up with phone technology, so just face it, and (3) I'm no longer going to treat my phone like a mini-computer and and load all kinds of bog-down crap on it, I may be springing for one of those deals.
 
I'm pretty sure that if my OG can run 2.3 that these September phones will handle ICS.

I think everyone is going to have to figure out what's important to them. Most of us need to replace our OGs real quick-like. I've decided that LTE is the deciding factor for me. It's been reported that even a single core LTE phone is faster than a dual core 3G phone. So the first dual core LTE phone to drop gets my moolah. And that looks to be the Bionic.

Also, I'm not getting to hyped up on the Vigor. Specs sound good, but I simply don't trust HTC.
 
I with you, Yank. Even with the latest Liquid and CM ROMs coming out, I'm still having too many problems. Combined with that, my wife's OG is looking quite tired (more physically though). I'm ready to upgrade both of ours soon. Tired of the crummy phones coming out on Verizon and their lack of dev. support. Just really frustrated here. Gah!
 
I was looking forward to the Bionic, but after finally trying out One Click Root, and loving the extra options that open up from rooting, I'm not staying with Motorola since they lock their boot loader. Even HTC seems iffy on that, so I'm hoping Verizon gets the next Nexus phone since Samsung seems pretty open, even going as far as cooperating with CM.
 
I linked a BGR report that stated that the SGS2 was due to drop on the same day as the Bionic... lets hope its true.
 
i think i am going to wait till October for these 720 screens i am hearing about and that ics phone from Samsung also. Timing is real important to me too. And for the love of God if Verizon and just have one stock android phone running ICS and is dual core that is the phone I want if not I will have to settle with a Samsung phone or whatever phone that is going to be huge like the SGSII or something that mod community will use a lot. If I can just a get a vanilla rom with all the bloat and ui off of my next phone it will be great. :) And so far the SGSII seems to be the best bet when it comes with the promised phones landing on Verizon. But now I am hearing about this GSII plus wtf is that. We need to slow this down lol. JK

But I am hoping for the nexus 3 or prime or whatever to land on Verizon. Cuz Google always releases the newest updates on that phone first.

I am currently on my 3rd replacement droid running MIUI and it isnt that bad I can make this phone last till the end of this year. I think.

I lost my insurance because I made two claims within a one year period. I think this bullshit but oh well. phone bill just got a lot cheaper.

EXACTLY how I feel. Im another one who has an OG that is clearly showing imminent signs of giving up the ghost, and for the longest time I have been saying 'just wait for bionic.' Now, with the SGS2 also nearing, and that leaked roadmap showing that both will be released on the same day... looks like I'll be taking a day to play with them at the verizon store. Either one will likely suffice, but the unlocked bootloader is probably going to be the deal maker between the two.

Sorry moto, your secrecy is going to lose you yet another customer.
 
I was almost gung ho hell bent on buying the SGSII - but now that I realize that, even with it being a badass phone back in April and still one today, it's just ... old. As in almost 5 months old by the time VZW gets it - and locked bootloader or not, I'm talking myself more and more into the Bionic.

Why? The bootloader will be unlocked at some time (I pray for Nov, 2 months, which is how long I waited with my DROID to root anyway, so no big loss for me). Plus, they have put a lot of effort in redesigning the phone, and I have a bit of faith - after tasting the success of DROID I sincerely feel (hope, pray, believe, fervently and vehemently) that they are not going to give me another RAZR v3.

That being said, I have enough upgrades (but not enough money) to get this and then swap out if I do not want it. I'd hate to use the upgrades so close to each other, but I have 3, so....I could always make it a yearly upgrade thing, which would be so much nicer to my wallet anyway.

Also, I noticed something ... odd .. in the local VZW store. The highest priced phones were all over $200 - but when I read the fine print, the advertised prices were for the phone AND the 'accessory kit' which they claim is like an $80 value, tacking on an additional $50 to the price. Way down at the bottom was just the phone itself under a new contract price, and all but the Charge (?) were $199. I thought that was extremely sneaky....

Also, I bought my DROID by calling CS - and I got a brand new, never handled DROID that still has a stiff KB slide. You can bet your bottom dollar that I'm going through CS again, instead of going into a store. I'll do like Dread and go play in the store - but I'm not buying from the store.

BTW, t was only $20 extra for overnight delivery....So, I had my DROID in my hands first thing Sat morning without having to brave the stupidly long lines at the store....
 
i was wondering if any one can inform me with how the upgrade discount works for instance I got my phone Nov 6, 2009 when the droid first came out now I qualified for an early upgrade as of july 6 and i get 30 dollars off as of right now when renew my contract. I was wondering if I wait till the end of my contract on nov 6 of this year do I get a larger amount off than 30 dollars?

Maybe. When I normally hear about the discount, it's $50. I've got a $50 discount, but I didn't get it because of Verizon, but b/c of a Verizon employee. Still, I won't be getting my next phone anywhere but Costco. Will be more than that amount off. Plus the accessories.

Also worth noting, that same discount can only be applied at a Verizon store and not a third party retailer.
 
Well with the recent announcements of Google buying Motorola and Samsung hiring Steve from CyanogenMod, how has this persuaded people in what phone to buy? Galaxy S2 or Bionic? Both are rumored to come out on the same day.
 
Google buying Motorola is much more important for me. Samsung hiring Steve is nice, but he's not going to bring CM to Samsung, it remains separate.

True. But from what I've read, it won't really change much other then Google securing the patents as Motorola is still going to operate as normal. Not sure what exactly this means?
 
not in later phones you cannot....

Yeah, I use LPP also, but still having it running, even in the background, is not something I like - I'm just averse to running to launchers at the same time, like trying to run KDE and Gnome at the same time (or, more poignantly, XFCE and Gnome)
