what remedies do you use when you are sick?

DON'T PANIC!!!!!!!!!
hey guys,

so it would seem that i came down with a cold last night. i could not sleep and everything was plugged up. Not much coughing yet. it got so bad that i had to find a late night pharmacy and i ended up buying me some Thera flu........man that thing just knocked me right out.

so my friend also mentions of trying a hot toddy next time around. it is basically a hot lemonade or lemon ice tea(heated) with a shot of whiskey. For my friend he says that this knocks him right out. i do not see it fixing my nasal passages so i doubt that it would work.

as of right now my suggestion would be thera flu.....what is yours?

REST!
If I could afford it, it's what I'd do for a few days. I'm just coming off a full dose of antibiotics (minor bronchitis) and still not kicking it. May be back at the doctors soon. :(

Failing rest, tons of liquids. If you're stuffy at night, those Breathe Right strips (and they now have store brand) work miracles. :)

I just get on with it, whiskey definitely helps... get a good sleep off it. Some vicks sinex would help unblock your nose but the last time I used it I ended up losing my sense of smell and taste for a few days which is really weird

When we were kids, mom used to fix it like so, squeeze a whole lemon, a teaspoon or maybe it was a tablespoon of honey, and I guess a shot of whiskey, she always used Grand Dad, 100 proof. Boil it and we had to drink it while it was hot and goto bed for the night. When we woke up, the cold was gone! I can't remember if it helped when stuffed up but wasn't feeling bad anymore. I haven't tried it since then but next time I will.

Well this thread is convenient, a cold ruined my long weekend :( I take plenty of Vitamin C and zinc while drinking lots of water.

A friend of mine swears by DayQuil/NyQuil.

its supposed to be the worst flu season in a long while so when somebody gets sick i'm not surprised.

nyquil never really did anything for me. but i swear Thera flu just knocked me out. it also cleared my sinuses. it did make my nose a little too dry to the point where breathing thru it hurt a little.

Acupuncture and Moxibustion

Acupuncture and moxibustion can provide some immediate relief from cold symptoms and help the body expel the pathogen much faster. Acupuncture points along the lung and large intestine meridians are often used as they activate the immune function in the body.

The most important acupuncture point in treating the common cold is Large Intestine 4. This point is located in the web between the thumb and index finger. This point is very effective for this condition, since it suppresses pain and relieves exterior conditions. Patients frequently experience quick relief when the point is needled or massaged.

HTH.

Plenty of rest, but still get up and move around to keep things moving (blood, lymph, bowels), lots of fluids, as much quality food as I can stand (feed that cold!), vitamin C, and a hot toddy before bed.

Zicam and Mucinex. I love this combo. It kept me from having a full blown out crappy cold/ fever/ sweats etc. for a week to a mild bout in 1 day.

um....isn't that called meth???:P

mind over matter......works every time:)

No I think I'm ok. The sudifed is for the congestion and the Tylenol is for the body aches and pains and the dayquil is for the deconjestion (or is it the other way around)

中药!How effective do you find it?

I've taken the Chinese pills that I got from the local pharmacy when I've had cold symtoms, which is not too often, and I've drunk hot chrysanthemum tea as well. I'm sure the hot flower tea provide the most relief. That's what I've found.

One thing I've certainly found though. I get far less colds in China than when I was living in the UK. Even though I'm living in a very cold climate in winter, but it's always very dry where I am now.

It's the steam in the hot drinks or soup that helps a bit with stuffiness. The old remedy was to boil a kettle of water and inhale the steam. Menthol fumes can also do some of this.

We used to get hot orange juice and honey.

Swallow a glob of Vicks Vapor Rub
Cod Liver Oil
Castor Oil
Father John
and Chicken Noodle Soup

You should be good to go the next day...
