I must say, I tried this today, with moderate use - and still have a little under 50% battery left. And I haven't noticed any issues for the apps I use. Great tip!
I have found it to vastly improve my battery life without any adverse effects to the stock applications by shutting this off.
Google talk doesn't work with it off.
Ok, so I am noticing now that if I let the phone go to sleep for more than 10 minutes or so, with this feature disabled, I'm not getting exchange or gmail notifications. Under about 10 minutes, it's fine - but nothing after that. When I enable it, notifications always come through.
tried it for a day off and while i got more battery life i experienced the same loss of connection many have reported. The battery life was not alot more either (1.5 hours at most) so i turn it back on for now and this way i actually get my mail and stay connected to my chat programs.

Ya thats some great logic...leave it on for no purpose so it drains away your battery. YAWN...leave it on! it's a smart phone...if my phone made coffee i would have it making me a fresh cup all day long...just in case i wanted one
