What's the absolute, definitive, final answer to a grandfathered unlimited data plan question

No, the unlimited plan is what was previously offered by Verizon, and is now grandfathered for those that have not used an upgrade to start a new contract. I still have 2 lines of truly unlimited data. The 2GB plan is not the same.

Have a Galaxy Nexus on order right now direct from Verizon as an upgrade to one of my non-smart phones. It will arrive tomorrow and I'll activate it tomorrow night. We will find out once and for all and I'll post the results on Wednesday.
I'm thinking about doing this also, as I've had the Incredible since launch and it's randomly starting to lock up on me. I wonder if the latest firmware is doing this to force us to upgrade?!?! ;)

When you ordered the new Galaxy Nexus on a non-smart-phone line, did you have to choose a data plan for that line? Are you going to then switch the phone over to one of your unlimited data lines?

Yes, that is correct. Ordered it as an upgrade to a non-smart phone, selected the 2GB, then when it arrives will activate it on the non-smart phone line, re-activate the dumb phone on that line, switch my phone to the new GNex phone, then call customer service to cancel the 2 GB plan.

Hoping for the best.

This is the step by step that I've found online will allow this, I hope.

Well, no final answer yet. I ordered a Galaxy Nexus, got it home, but couldn't get it activated on my dumb phone line initially because I had ZERO signal at home with the Gnex. Droid X is not good, but it's there. Gnex had nothing. Had to drive about a mile away to get enough signal for it to make connection and activate.

Called customer service though to return it to Verizon and asked the rep and she did say that I will be able to do it. Just have to find a different phone now and try again.

I'll post when I find out for sure.

That's the way to do it!

So the answer is...YES! The Verizon rep even said, "yeah, that's the smart thing to do as a work around to keep your unlimited data."

Since I upgraded from a 3G phone to 4G phone, the rep said it would have been easier to just call them as soon as I received the phone and they would handle it all internally, and not even activate it on the dumb phone line that I used for the upgrade.

So I upgraded a dumb phone line with no data and a Samsung Haven to a 4G Droid 4. I transferred it to an unlimited data line which previously had a 3G Droid 2 on it that got lost.

Done deal, old phone reactivated, 2 GB data plan cancelled, new 4G phone on unlimited data line.

Happy camper!:D

Has anyone else done this? If you cancel the 2 GB data plan, will you have to eventually pay the full price for the phone?

I searched the site for quite a while so I hope I didn't miss my answer. I am grandfathered with Verizon for unlimited data. Last month I bought the Maxx HD at full price. My contract will expire at the end of this year. I think if I continue to pay things will stay the same. But I am wondering if Verizon would drop me to a current plan once it expires. Can I tell Verizon to extend my contract? Bottom line.......I have the phone I want, I'm staying with Verizon and of course I want to keep unlimited data.

You will not lose your grandfathered unlimited data plan at the end of your contract. Just keep on like you are doing and you should not have to do anything different to keep your plan as-is.

If you DO start a new contract, THAT is when they will move you to a shared limited data plan. They won't start new contracts with unlimited data.

Exactly. You will become month to month. Its the best case scenario for maintaining your unlimited. Except for phones are expensive as you've no doubt experienced first hand.

Thanks for the responses. The other thing that crossed my mind was Verizon will have a lot of grandfathered non-contract customers within the next year. I can't help but wonder if they will force us to the expensive plan. They may consider they don't want us unlimited anymore, which they could force us if they want. But I will worry about that if it happens I guess. Hopefully they will let us be so we don't jump to another carrier.

Verizon has hinted that is exactly what is going to happen...

Which have they hinted at? Forcing to limited plans or letting us be so we don't jump to another carrier.

The Verizon rep I spoke with said he had not heard anything either way.

Hinted that they will get rid of unlimited completely, I'll see if I can find the article.

But then clarified with this:

So who knows really lol... They change their minds on a whim, and remember, once your contract ends, they have no legal obligation to provide you with anything. But past practices have shown they continue to honor old contracts until a new one is signed.

Is this still working?

The Butterfly S (which will possibly be the Droid DNA+) has me obsessing about a new phone!
