who moved or planning to move from Galaxy?

how's optical trackpad compared to samsung?

actually it's better than I was expecting it to be. :) It's not too sensitive so you can easily move the cursor only 1-2 characters. What I'm missing is the call button, for example if you're in the browser and want to make a quick call you have to go to the home screen first and from there press the Phone button. Also the storage space for application is a bit too small (~150MB) hopefully it will be rooted soon so we can use apps2sd. Overall the Desire is a fantastic device.

I kept my Legend for 3 days then returned it to swap for a Desire. It really is a lot of cash to part with but the phone performs unbelievably well. I'm sure I will get my money's worth out of it. It is hard to put the thing down. Bigger screen is really worth it. (My wife just bought an HD2 at the same time. Now THAT is a bigger screen!)
Legend felt nice in my hand and performed really well but I just had this nagging feeling that at 600mhz it would leave me feeling like the Galaxy did before long. Every other new phone these days has a snapdragon.

Actually I hate the optical pad. Samsung dpad is way better. But that's the only things you can compare between these phones.
Adios Samsung, we will never meet again.
I can't say desire is perfect but it's incredible compared to galaxy and I really love it. I wish I could say the same about galaxy :(

i could have sworn i'd heard another relatable term for it in this context

Is "caret" the term you're looking for, mrqs?

Eight months on I'm still using my Galaxy. I bought it unlocked so I'm free to move to something else, and will as soon as there's a device out there that I want.

If there were a sexy Snapdragon QWERTY slider (preferably portrait) out there made by HTC then I'd go for it in a second. I'm sick of the slow & unresponsive Android on-screen keyboard on the Galaxy.

Thoughts on other devices out there:

  • htc desire: aesthetically a bit "meh", slick UI but i don't care for twitter and facebook therefore sense UI will probably just be an overhead for me. would like a physical keyboard though

  • htc supersonic: one of the sexiest devices i've seen. assume it will have sense UI. would like a physical keyboard

  • samsung galaxy S: i hate hate hate samsung but this device looks amazing- sexiest device i've seen so far. UI is a bit of an iphone rip-off (con), it's been announced that there will be a qwerty slider version which is tempting, but my loathing for samsung will be the deal-breaker

  • sony ericsson x10: aesthetically it's a bit angular, not a modern design IMHO. like sense UI, social networking integration is meaningless to me so this will be an overhead and it really seems to chug with all that fancy UI

there are some Dell devices "leaked" today on engadget that look quite nice, but the portrait qwerty slider is WinMo7 :( the android ones are almost there, but not quite what i'm after. and again with the damn social networking bollocks right through the UI.

so, still i wait...

Well I've got myself an Xperia X10, still not 2.1 but everything works right outta box, updates APNs everything. No root yet, but I dont need it cos the firmware is great. Galaxy is on Ebay :)

and it def doesnt chug, I dont like the social networking so iI dont use it, easy huh?

I'm waiting for the Nexus One to appear (properly) in the UK. If it doesn't arrive soon i'll get a HTC Desire. Bloody Google! I'm annoyed with Samsung for bringing out the i5700 and supporting that over my phone and in stock form the Samsung was a bit rubbish so I'll probably avoid them for a while. Love what I could do with it though once I'd modded it.

why would you get a nexus 1 over a desire?

also samsung are just as bad with support for their other android devices including spica.
if you are basing their support for spica over galaxy on android version then i think thats wrong.
different devices have different pitfalls and due to mem limitations on galaxy its probably harder to get a nice 2.1 fully functional on it although it is possible.
in retrospect HTC still havent updated 2.1 on hero even though g1 had 1.6 OTA and tatoo came with it out of the box. does this mean HTC prefers supporting the G1?

samsung is bad dont get me wrong but you have an older device, things are gonna change with newer devices.
its like driving off the forecourt with a latest spec Golf GTI and then they give it a new face lift 6 months later and suddenly you feel dated.
it happens with all products

looks like it is coming soon:
Nexus One launches on Vodafone UK this Friday, April 30 -- Engadget

Nexus One being Google's Experience phone or whatever, ie. any new stuff from Google hits it first, anything they choose to keep exclusive will work with it - the Google Voice search or whatever it was they didn't let 2nd tier makers have access to.

The i7500 was released without compatible software and yes I am basing it on Android version. The UI was pretty slow before ROM upgrade, etc. Basically, it felt like a beta version phone. The whole custom phone interface thing that has given the devs so much trouble upgrading to use 2.1 with it.

Using HTC not upgrading the Hero is a good example of why it makes sense to wait for the N1 instead, otherwise you are at the whim of HTC to produce the upgrades.

You say I have an older device and things will change but come on, we are talking <6 months between i7500 and i5700.. that stung a bit when the i5700 seemed to getting updates and we were seemingly ignored. Anyway, it's busted now so the point is moot - no Samsung for me.

It's more like buying a Golf GTI and then in 6 months VW scrap the model and start selling BMW M3s instead. :)

I am still thrilled with my Desire. I also bought an HD2 for my wife. We had a couple of little issues that had me emailing support from HTC. In each case, they responded with a helpful, well-explained solution within just a few hours. When I responded to their response, again, I got an email back later the same day. Good experience so far.

Gotta say, though, battery life sucks. Worse than on a Galaxo-loaded Galaxy. With moderate usage, I have to charge every night. The bigger screen does make a difference. It is a hell of a lot nicer to read on it (I use it to read RSS feeds a lot). That being said, it looks tiny next to the HD2. That screen really is a wonder to behold. And it feels surprisingly nice in your hand because it is so thin. Don't know if the 4g evo is the same. i think it is a bit thicker.
