Help Why did you buy an M8 instead of an S5?

50 gigs free storage? For how long? Where is it from?

It's 65gigs now. Only got upgraded last week or so 😊
It's a HTC/Google tie up, lasts for two years. Previously they gave free with dropbox but now it's goggle drive. Maybe it's a European thing only....

Very good points. I'm not that worried about the non removable battery though. I have a RAVPower external battery pack so I always have extra juice whenever I don't have access to a wall wart and cable. Plus I'm into a cycle of switching phones well before there could be any chance of the battery degrading.

Don't forget about the expendable memory on top of a already happy 32 gig storage. Not only that since you mentioned battery. The m8 will definitely last you all day. The should you be a heavier than heavy user, when emig needs to a little kick on ultra power saving mode. Which will definitely make that last ten percent last another day

Nope, US users have it also. Thanks for letting us know. 😃

I got my last years HTC One on the first day when available, same for this years HTC M8.
I just like the HTC M8 build quality, S5 is really too plastic, in fact I personally feels that Note 3 finishing is nicer than S5.
The LCD display is more natural compared to S5, just like NatGeo program versus cartoon program.
More user friendly and familiar with Sense then Touchwiz.
Very happy with the camera, especially low light and night scenes. On daylight photos, I should say S5 performs better.
Battery life is very good, enough to last the whole day.
Storage is no issue with the SD card.
Speed is fast, comparing with a friends S5, feels like Touchwiz is a bit of a drag and Sense 6 is swift and light.
Stereo speakers is for others to catch up.

My hope for next year is a 8 mp camera, larger battery and improve display......2K, QHD? I'm sold.

For me it was build quality, comfort, visual appeal, speed & build quality. Camera quality is not a priority for me.

Precisely. My previous phone was an S3. I skipped the S4 and had high hopes for the S5. However it just didn't do it for me.

Fancied a change and so far extremely happy with my M8:D

My three concerns moving to HTC were:

Non removable battery - non issue as battery life is awesome!
Expandable storage - has it so no issue!
Low megapixel camera - very happy with results so far. I don't plan to blow up or severely crop photos so not a problem. In fact the dual camera depth of field effect is very good.

  1. I listen to a lot of music all day when I'm at work from classic jazz to progressive metal. Hands down, the M8 sounds better. Obviously, with the front facing speakers it sounds better by itself. But, when I plug in headphones or connect it to the input jack in my truck, the sound is 10 times better that my GS4. Seriously.
  2. Sense is SO elegant and user friendly. Much better than TW.
  3. Camera is fine for me, and the features are really fun. The shutter speed is outstanding, too. No problems catching action shots. The video is fantastic as I just started playing with 60 FPS HD today.
  4. No lag. GS4 was laggy, the M8 is not...at all.

Honestly ....Next years camera on the one series is going to be bananas.

I'm fine for now with what the M8 offers. It is what it is..

M8 > S5, why? Mostly because of build quality as most have expressed. The fact that it's 90% aluminum, <does it for me>. The S5 is good device. But for over $500 or whatever it costs, I'd like to feel like I bought and adult device and not some plasticky feeling kid's toy. I wonder if there is any truth to that rumor about a Prime S5? M8 and iPhone do design and build quality the way it should be done.
The one regret, if any, is that like the iPhone, you can find 'tons' of cases and accessory options, like a charging dock, very easily for the S5. I am so unimpressed with the lack of variety for M8 cases and still waiting for dock (which I have located but is currently out of stock and only available in mid May). Somewhat ridiculous. I mean, c'mon HTC, I invested in your device and I would hope you would like to <keep> me.

I had an S3 and thought the S4 was too similar to it, I was hoping for something new with the S5 but it, again just looks so like the S3. I loved the S3 but wanted my new phone to feel like a new phone. The gimmicks don't impress me on the S5, fingerprint reader, heart beat monitor etc. I already had so many things turned off on my S3 to save battery. Anyway, got the M8 and I love it. Looks and feels great, battery lasts for ages. The sound is fantastic, how natural is it to put the speakers on the front rather than on the back where they get muffled. And yes the camera is fine, I only use my phone camera for quick snaps, if I am going somewhere and I know I want real high quality snaps I take my real camera. Even with a clear case on the M8 it still feels great and just oozes quality. I was in a store the other day and they had the S3, 4 and 5 all in a row and they were just so bland looking. All great phones but looks wise so samey. Anyway, that's my reason and I am delighted with the phone, good luck.

I was going to reply and then... I read this.

I'm leaning towards an M8 purchase after being a long time Samsung user. As current owners of the HTC M8 please tell me why you preferred the HTC One (M8) over the Samsung Galaxy S5.

In my case it will be because (I get the new phone Saturday) of the silly, kiddie gimmicks on the Samsung and the cheesy plastic construction.....

perhaps children like to wave their fingers over the screen like a demented alchemist but I prefer more adult features like solid construction, massive memory, little bloatware, good speakers and a lot of SD storage. The picture is pretty much even between the two. I seldom take pictures with my phone.

hi all.
randomly bumped into s5 in the store just earlier... let's just say I'm even more happy with my m8 now :-D
really don't like the touch whizz on it at all... and it didn't feel premium at all

Haven't used the s5 but I have used touchwiz on the s3 a few Times before. Wow, what a mess. Even comparing it to my evo LTE.

My wife got the S5 and I can say that if it were my phone I would root it as soon as cyanogenmod put something out. However I like the calendar app better on the S5 than the M8 but nothing a good app can't fix, amiright?

To be honest, I can live with touchwiz, but I prefer sense or stock a lot more. I used the s5 for a few minutes on my local T-Mobile before buying the m8, and it felt so cheap and not worth the money at all. Very happy with my One m8

I used my Galaxy Nexus for over 2 years. It was the best phone I've ever had but it was far from perfect. No SD card slot, small slow camera, a single crappy speaker on the back side, couldn't hear the other person with any call recorder. I liked the HTC One (M7) but it would be 8 months old by the end of my contract.

I started watching leaks and news of upcoming phones. I actually ordered the LG G2 but the tiny volume button and bad software the Verizon edition had turned me off so I didn't accept it from UPS. LG Nexus 5 looked good but not compatible with Verizon which for coverage reasons, I must stick with. Rumors of the S5 made it look like my next phone but then the leaks turned out to be wrong. It's too much like what I was upgrading from.

Next came the HTC One (M8) that had better looks and features than the One M7. I watched the HTC introduction show online. Soon as it was over I was on my way to the Verizon store. Picked it up at 12:01 and have loved it ever since. Everything with it is awesome except the camera and it's not as bad as most reviewers make it out to be.

The One + 1 coming up looks like the phone the S5 rumors described. It looks like a phone I could love too except no Verizon support. I am a CNC machinist at a research university so the M8's metal content and build quality mean a lot to me. Lovin it so far.

I am not a huge Samsung phone fan. I hate they way they feel.....all plastic and cheap. I had a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and while I love the phone, I just didn't like the build quality. My main reason for not getting an S5........Touchwiz. I had a tablet with Touchwiz on it and ditched it super quick. I played with my wife's S3/4 and I just can't get over how intrusive and laggy it is. Sense 6 is hardly there. I notice the Verizon bloatware more then Sense 6 lol. I love the build quality of the M8, the quickness of the phone, and most important, the call quality. Awesome phone.
