Root why did you root?

Guys, just some general talk here..instead of my nagging questions!!!!

what were your main reasons for rooting, and how often do you "tweak"?

-My main reason to root was out of shear boredom. I have been tweaking quite frequently lately to find a setup that works good with my phone. I also like the unrestrictedness of rooting.

One of the main reasons is because of the junk sprint puts on it that I have no intention of using that S-on will not allow me to remove.

Now that I have the freedom to change what I want, I can't even tell you how many different roms I have tried, and different little tweaks, to see what they would do.

Now I get a kick out of hearing what the forum members come up with and feel happy to help point the way for people who have gotten tangled up flashing or whatever.

I rooted to get rid of Sprint's limitations and allow the phone to be used as HTC intended it to be used.

I was tired of my battery being at 50% 2 hours after taking it off of the charger. I'm surprised I'm not one of those people with a broken charging port as often as I had to use a charger! Now I can easily get 40 hours of life out of my battery. The first week I was rooted I tried several different roms. Now in week 3 of being rooted I want to try something new, but I can't rationalize it with my current setup working so well. :)

The sprint bloat drove me to it. I was starting to run out of memory for apps. Plus I figured that if battery life was better, then that was gravy so I took the plunge.

But with that said, I've never felt like custom kernels outside of sbc really enhanced battery all that much, although maybe it was worse with froyo. The stock htc gingerbread kernel is actually pretty good.

Originally my motivation was to remove Sprint bloatware. Then I discovered the customization and control capabilities. I like to change everything I possibly can, so that was the deciding factor.

Then I discovered custom ROMs, kernels, tweaks and all that jazz. So I was so happy with my decision.

Now when my friends have problems with their phones my response is always "with root all things are possible"

PS, nag away with questions. Everybody here is always helpful. I know I certainly never mind answering questions, if I have the answer.

Let's see, it's been a while but I seem to remember rolling the idea of rooting around for a few months before I actually did it. I liked the idea of the freedom it gave me, change what I want, and how I want. Eventually I got a sprint update that pushed Blockbuster and a game demo to my phone, and that was it. I called 'em up asking how to remove it, they said, "Umm... nope, gotta keep it," which is when I reached out to the root community, finding youtube videos and this site. :D

Its funny, I was reading an article comparing android to apple and they mentioned rooting and I was like wth is root. A week later I started getting low internal memory messages and when I investigated online it lead me to root and ultimately here!! Its fun to know you're getting the most out of your phone.

When I first rooted, I swore I felt like a god. To have the much control, block ads, install new roms, ahhh... I loved it. A huge power trip; enjoy!

I agree 100% with this. I was checking out XDA for a completely different matter the other day and decided after I was done to check out the EVO 4G threads, people are way more not nice (in my G-rated vernacular) over there :)

I rooted to get rid of bloatware, acquire tethering capabilities that sprint way rips off for, improve battery life and to attempt to bring new life and fun to a device I got right around launch. And it worked for all of the above!

hi i build and hardware hack computers...got tired of growing bloat on phones so decided to take control of my phone..enjoy it more than puters now lol..still nothing close to an overclocked gpu and my overclocked watercooled i-7 but the new quad core phones r looking fine..so much that intel is jumping in arms market...besides its fun every new rom is like opening another xmas present

Initially I rooted because I wanted WiFi tether, but not the one that came on the phone (if you know what I mean).

Then I wanted better battery life. But since I usually hit problems with every solution simultaneously, I'm not sure if it was one solution, a combination or all of them that fixed the battery problem.

I went with the MikG 3.0 ROM with its stock kernel (yea, no bloatware). Then the BatteryCalibration app, SetCPU, then Juice Defender with everything except Bluetooth turned on and let it manage everything. I also purchased one of those Anker battery chargers with two 1,750 mAh batteries for about $10 (who knows if they're really 1,750 mAh).

Prior to rooting and under normal circumstances, with everything but data turned off, I'd get no more than about 10 hours on a battery. Now, it's usually over 24 and I've had as high as 35, with most everything turned on.
