Why do I want the thunderbolt?

ImCharming

Newbie
So I will be getting a new upgrade on the 26th. I currently have the LG env2. I had a mytouch 4g for about a month but had no service with it and ended up selling it.

I haven't seen many threads about the positives of the TB, other than the need to vent thread. I was just wondering what the positives are for the phone, why do I want it? Sell me on buying it :D thanks :D

Want the most honest opinion your going to hear...

Go to a VZW corporate store, try it out, and get it if your impressed. From that day forward you'll have 2 weeks to really put it through its paces and see how u like it as your every day device.

It's a really good device, very good in a lot of ways. No its not perfect, no device is...either way its up to you to see if its for you. None of us here can really answer the question as to what is going to wow you, or turn u off. You have to jump in and decide that for yourself.

Either way...Good Luck.

I messed around some with one at a mall kiosk thing and really liked it, but I only handled it for a few minutes. I guess I should rephrase my question.

What was the selling point for you with the phone / what do you love about it?

Like sean said you have two weeks to try out the phone. If you dont like it you can return it. Only you can tell if you like it or not. While you can get peoples likes but what one person thinks is a plus is a minus to another person. Example is battery life some people says it sucks while others say they have no problems. So really you are back to where you started from.

I have only had the phone for like 9 hours and it seems to be to my liking. So go out and get the phone. Try it out for yourself.

Do you mind it not having a great camera, or great battery life? Cuz the Evo/Thunderbolts suck on both counts.

Do you like the idea of customization? Or it "just working"? Androids are HIGHLY customizable to fit your every need but this leads to general instability and some minor bugs from time to time(most of the time a quick google search solves them).

Do you use any apps you cant live without? If so check the android market online and make sure Android has them. Also note that some android apps are vastly inferior to the Apple versions(Im looking at you Facebook).

Are you a female? Females nearly always prefer iPhone.

Do you have a brain? Stupid people ALWAYS prefer Apple(Droids can be a tad complex nothing bad but if you're forrest gump forget about it)

New Phones! There are like 6 brand new phones coming to verizon in the next 6 weeks, some of which are supposedly AMAZING so google that first and check them out, may be that a Droid Bionic or Galaxy S II would be more to your liking.

The T-Bolt is an OK phone but I don't feel it's THAT great. It's Verizons version of the EOV with a couple of very minor hardware differences. The Evo is a great phone, but it's a year old now. Basically so is the T-Bolt. Personally I'd wait for the newer phones to come out, THEN decide. :)

I just thought I'd chime in quick. I won't go on an on and repeat what Ive said in other post, but I just thought Id share that while returning my Bolt last night, due to all of the bugs that I had with my 3, .... I talked to the sales rep about the new phones coming out and he said he has actually played with the Bionic and he personally was NOT impressed with it, he said he preferred the Thunderbolt, not that that means much, but It was a bit surprising to hear, especially from a rep.

Also he said the Incredible 2 will also be out very soon. He also agreed that the iPhone was a VERY stable, reliable solid phone and has he best screen he has ever seen (his words) . I did play with the iPhone for minute, I think I like it, and the screen is incredibly clear.

It's fast and beautiful. The camera is great, and the battery is manageable. The screen size makes it very comfortable to do more things on the web. It does whatever you throw at it.

No phone has better OPERATIONAL specs. I don't care about your duel core when 2.2 can't use it.

Kickstand. What.

The EVO comparisons are stupid. This is a different phone on a very different network. The upgraded hardware makes a huge difference.

The Atrix is a Dual core phone, and its running 2.2 Froyo, its I believe Gingerbread that the dual core devices are having issues with right now. Which is why the LG G2X will also launch with 2.2. They'll work it out eventually for the phones to be optimized to run 2.3

You don't have any idea what you are talking about. And you couldn't be more wrong. There are literally dozens of phones with better operational specs. And no matter if you like it or not, Tbolt is really just an Evo with more Internal storage and ram. It has the same processor, crappy screen, software, camera. Oh and you don't even get the HDMI out that the EVO has.

Most of the newer phones have much better hardware. Deal with it.

I'm not saying the Tbolt isn't a good phone. But it's a good phone in it's own right, it doesn't need you in here making it sound better than it actually is. It's good, but it's technology is getting older. No dual-core, no high res screen(very noticeable even if you think it wouldn't be), no HDMI out, no NFC, bad camera performance(this is undeniable just search these very forums if you don't believe me) and it doesn't even launch with Gingerbread installed, tho they promise it will get GB "soon". Also, single core chipset matters, even if you refuse to admit it. It matters more going forward too. So in 1 or 2 years it's gonna be a huge difference with gaming apps especially.

Literally dozens? Like dozens...plural...as in more than one dozen? How many dozen?...2?...3? I think dozens might be exaggerating just a bit

Okay, so the phone is not perfect but I assure you...there are a small number of devices (FAR less than 1 dozen) that have better specs. But this phone holds it own and I can't imagine someone saying..."I can't do [insert random task here] with this phone because it doesn't have a dual core.

So battery life is not stellar...it's not. For most people, you should be able to get 12+ hours out of a charge. If you are on the phone pretty much constantly...look to get 6 hours out of it.

I'm not a Thunderbolt fanboy. It's a great device but when my one year contract is up...you bet I'll be upgrading to a new device (I always do). But this is a great device with great specs. Is it the end all be all? No. Like others have said...if you want it, get it. You have 14 days to return it if you don't like it. But you will have to pay a $35 restocking fee to return it so don't pick one up if you don't think you'll like it.

But...let's keep it civil in here people. Someone was looking for advice not to read people bickering over stupid, trivial things.

Edit: Oh yeah...and this phone is an EVO refresh...it is. BUT, it does NOT have the same processor (Second Gen Snapdragon), it does NOT have the same screen (Super LCD), it does NOT run the same software (upgraded Sense), it does NOT have the same camera (improved 8MP camera). So before you call someone out on not knowing what they are talking about...make sure you have your specs in order. ;) You're right about the HDMI port though LOL

Wrong. LTE is by far superior to Sprint's Wimax. Newer generation snapdragon processor, improved screen, and the camera/camcorder is excellent. 2.2 isn't optimized for dual core technology. TB is the best Android device available currently. Not saying it won't be overshadowed by newer devices, but this is an amazing phone and coming from an LG Env, is a great choice.

If you get the TB, you can look like you're shunning the koolaid of the iPhone for the Android koolaid.

I'm still not sold on android being a vastly superior O/S than the iPhone's O/S, I'm not even certain that it's superior to the iPhone's O/S.

What sells me on the Thunderbolt is its 4G speeds, although I don't realize those speeds when downloading nor at home. Then there's Flash capability, although I don't realize that 100% either since some of the sites I go to go a little nuts with flash embedded content. The phone's screen is nicer, this being confirmed from someone that owns an iPhone 4, but there are other phones due out that will have even nicer screens. About the only thing I am unconditionally excited about is not paying extra for 4G, although I have yet to receive my first month's bill so yet again I could be surprised at the end of the month.

The bottom line is you'll need to try for yourself to see if it's what you like. You're ultimately the only person that's going to have to put up with the phone on a daily basis so who cares what anyone else thinks?

See this where this Thread will go, and eventually turn into a food fight between forum members, because some really like it, and some are like..ehhh! 3 things...
I don't doubt at all what the rep told you, but I HIGHLY DOUBT that this rep played with a MOTO Droid Bionic in a store, unless he was at CES, OR CTIA a few weeks ago. They love to give BS info and lie man.

The incredible 2 will be a 3G only phone, so if someone is looking for 4G flavor, they won't find it there.

An iPhone? Lol....A rep comparing an iPhone to android is comical. Yes the screen is pretty, yes its easy to use, and yes the battery is good. But its very boring, and the iPhone 5 will be out very shortly. IMO... Apple can't hold a candle to Android...just my 2 cents.

I agree the rep probably wanted to push a TB sale, why hype a phone that he can't sell?

Can you believe people still buy phones looking for a nice screen, user friendliness, and a decent battery? The nerve!! /sarcasm

hahahaha...the nerve!!!
I was an iPhone user for years, to me its just bland and plain. However, we shall see what the iPhone 5 brings in Sept...prob a 4 inch screen, better cam and video playback, same style and shape with that button in the middle, and that boring OS...yes its buttery smooth, but a lil dry for my liking anymore.

The reason that you only see the "need to vent" threads are because they people who have a need to vent are more apt to come on here and vent then the people who are satisfied with their phone.

Quite frankly, I love everything about my phone. Everything! I don't have one single complaint about it. I have no returned my phone for any issues. I love its speed and its ease of use. I love the big screen. I love how smooth it looks and works. Contrary to most people, I don't have a problem with the battery life. I get through my normal days with normal use of my phone just fine. In fact my phone has been off of the charger for about 13 hours now, has endured normal phone/text/app usage all day and is still at 42%.

So there ya go. Hopefully that balances out the naysayers. The fact is people want to complain about anything because the phone won't wipe their rear end for them when they take a crap. With the exception of the display (which it isn't shabby with) the thunderbolt does everything the IPhone does except the t-bolt is bigger and faster. Period.

I love how everything in the Thunderbolt forums seems to turn into a iPhone vs. Android debate... Seriously, for the topic at hand, go to the store and play around with one, read up on the positives and negatives, and make your decision. I personally love mine but I knew what I wanted in a device and this thing fit the bill.

The thing I am worried about is when they will discontinue the unlimited web, which I want. So I'm worried if I wait too long that will be gone, but I'm not sure if I would be grandfathered in if I got the unlimited web.

So lets say April 26th comes up, I go and get the TB and unlimited web. They discontinue the web the next day, I get grandfathered into it and then a few days later the bionic would come out. Would I be able to return the TB and keep the unlimited web or would I lose that on the return?

Thanks in advance, not even sure this makes sense.

I'm a female and I happen to love my T-Bolt and Android in general. Have never even considered an iPhone. ;)

I love how customizable my phone is. When I had BB, I was always going for the latest OS, new themes, etc., to customize it, but it's nothing like the experience on Android.

The battery isn't the greatest, but it lasts long enough for me to where I only charge it overnight. It lasts me the whole day. The camera is also great, in my opinion. That's what sold me on my Incredible over my Droid X, the camera was better. And the T-Bolt camera doesn't disappoint me.

The size of the phone is great to me, well-proportioned. And the screen real estate makes typing a breeze.

It's a great device over all. And if you're waiting for the latest and greatest, you'll probably never upgrade your phone. ;)

If you want someone to sell you the phone then you shouldn't buy it. It just means you don't really need it. LOL.

I've already used an android phone quite a bit and fell in love, never been much into the apple products.

LOL, I just want to know the positives of the phone, since I've only really seen negatives.

And I also would like to root it, I think. When I had the MT4G I rooted it and was happier with it rooted then when it wasn't, so I'm not sure if that factors into this phone or other ones, I read that the bionic would be harder to root? :S

Well, if you ask "why do you want it?", than you probably don't! :P

To me its interesting to read the comments in this thread and forum. I am quite happy with my DX but I know I'll eventually exchange it for something better so I try to keep up with all the new devices out there.

I did look at a TB at a Verizon store a few days ago, just out of curiosity. IMO I really wasn't that impressed. The screen isn't any bigger than what I have now and while 4G sounds good, I'll wait until the tech matures a bit more and people aren't complaining as much. I also wasn't that impressed with the build quality of the unit itself - but perhaps that's because it was a demo? I did like the kickstand as I use my X for an alarm clock - would be nice to have that as a stock feature on my phone.

Overall, I'll wait and see what comes out over the next several months. Perhaps the Bionic, or Atrix if it comes to Vzw, or something even better - who knows? It is interesting to read the experiences of the early adopters - thank you all for posting.

And to those who have a TB and love it, no offense meant to you by what I wrote above, just my own observations

Over all its a great phone..I had a Dx b4 upgrading to the tb ...& I asked my self the same question ..y pay 250 for the phone, well I did it basically for the 4g data plan...no telling when V is going to up the price of 4g unlimited data so I jumped on it..the front facing camera is nice to...I like that it has more ram than most droids..over all I'm happy with my decision..at the end of the day u got to ask is it worth it? Well 4g data unlimited for 30$? Heck yes..
