Why Not Update To JI6 Now! (Manual update - includes Kies)

Just updated via Kies mini and it works. The hardest part was installing the drivers for the phone. Then someone mentioned to plug the usb cable to the mobo and it worked.

I compared the gps to my wife's (not updated) phone and it was night and day. After that I also updated her phone.

I got it via ODIN (Kies/Kies Mini don't like me).

Pre-update:

Max 2 visible sats, 0 connections.... EVERYWHERE (Had to rely on Use Mobile Networks for everything), and that was AFTER one or two of the "GPS Fixes"

Post-update:
Max 17 visible, 9 connected in the span of about 1 second. With Use Mobile Networks off, it got me within a couple of feet.

All in all, I'd say it was worth it.

The steps on that link you provided to update toJI6 via Mini-Kies don`t seem to work for Canadian Vibrant users: At part 6 of step 3 (It asks you to tap on ``Ask on connection`` and press the Home key), I have gone to the area specified but there is no ask on connection or even the USB Settings Menu (Under Applications, at least....) to get to it on my version of the phone...

Instead of the USB Settings Menu, I have.....Samsung Apps underneath Development. O.O

Have you tried ODIN?

I am trying Odin as we speak, however the link to the .tar firmware upgrade file is broken, so I`m missing that. Otherwise I`m ready to try to flash it that way.

I have the J15 and kies and mini kies don't seem to work, should I wait for 2.2 or use an alt method to get to J16?

I would use Odin then. Just follow the instructions carefully, remember you don't need anything in PIT* just PDA. It's pretty simple and safe if you follow the directions. ;)

Wait for the phone to completely reboot, don't interrupt the process. It takes less than 10 minutes.

Edit: * Footnote - You don't need anything in PIT so long as the JI6 file you have downloaded does not include a PIT file. Obviously, if your download included a PIT file it goes in this box. One of the downloads over at xda includes a file called "512.PIT. I don't see any difference in performance using either file, so I don't think it matters which one you use.

Thanks for the upload Robo.....except now when I try to extract the .Rar to put on odin, it asks for a password for the encrypted files......

I had no problems with the .tar you gave me.

x.x Sorry about this.

Okay so I think I figured things out....I also ended up with all the american-only apps (Avatar, sims, ect) When I applied the JI6 update....O.O

Swype constantly has to force-close., which is definitely lagging up the device.

Also, I'm not connecting at all to the bell network. It's like the device thinks it's on T-mobile (Startup screen is t-mobile, all apps are t-mobile based)

I'm not liking this. I think I may just flash back to standard and wait this out.....

Now I have to find the standard Canadian .pit and .rar file.......ugh....

That is the Tmobile JI6 that was sent OTA then decrypted and uploaded. It seems until we get the Canadian Bell file the only alternative will be waiting. Out of curiosity, you notice any improvement in the GPS performance?

The .tar I uploaded is the same as the file included in the .rar file (which also contains a .dll file that you don't need) so I didn't think you would need the password. But if you are interested, the password is: samfirmware.com

Ah, I didn't know there was no JI6 for Canada yet. Thanks for trying to help me out anyways, I'll just make sure I research more thoroughly before flashing next time :D

I just grabbed the JG8 firmware instead for now, there's some minor lag improvement (No GPS improvement that I can see though) JG8 is a safe bet for the Bell Vibrant, no problems at all on this firmware.

Now to wait. :P

how do you check how many sats you get? i never tried using the gps before updating, and after the update i tried using the gps but the signal would just get stuck.

You can download GPS Test (free app) from the Market or you can use lbstestmode. To access lbstestmode easily now and in the future download the free app Anycut from the Market and go to Activities/Lbstestmode and place a shortcut on one of your home screens. Lbstestmode has the advantage of already being installed in your phone as a resident test. It's already there whether you use it or not.

gps for me still doesn't work. updatingthe phone made things even worse. went to bed with full bars.. woke up to about 20% power left. every time i open advanced task killer, there are at least 7 apps that continue to re-open... much much more than before.

i vow to never buy a samsung smartphone ever again.

 That is truly bizarre, I wish I knew what is going on with your phone. I have no such problems with the GPS or apps. My phone is completely stock with JI6. Maybe hardware issue? Have you discussed this with Samsung Level 3 tech support?

oh, and it looks like the phone isn't detected by my computer anymore too. so i can't really do anything. tried it with debuffing on and off. i'm pretty close to selling this phone at this point.

What did Samsung level 3 support have to say?

i haven't called in yet. i'm at work right now. i'm not sure if i really even want to call in to samsung though. they dont' have my faith at all, and they probably wouldn't fix anything.
