Why Not Update To JI6 Now! (Manual update - includes Kies)

i haven't called in yet. i'm at work right now. i'm not sure if i really even want to call in to samsung though. they dont' have my faith at all, and they probably wouldn't fix anything.

Nice positive attitude man. Sheesh. Let's see, "my phone's messed up, don't want to buy anything from them again, but don't want to give them a chance to make it right, not even sure I can rely on them to fix it..."

Sell it and find something else then.

I would use Odin then. Just follow the instructions carefully, remember you don't need anything in PIT* just PDA. It's pretty simple and safe if you follow the directions. ;)

Wait for the phone to completely reboot, don't interrupt the process. It takes less than 10 minutes.

Edit: * Footnote - You don't need anything in PIT so long as the JI6 file you have downloaded does not include a PIT file. Obviously, if your download included a PIT file it goes in this box. One of the downloads over at xda includes a file called "512.PIT. I don't see any difference in performance using either file, so I don't think it matters which one you use.
Thanks robo! I used your .tar file and it worked great and i'm surprised how easy it was once I figured out download mode on this thing. I ended up taking out the battery and holding the vol + and - while putting the battery back in. Do you know if this is the update that has marketplace with the normally blocked apps?

You're very welcome Brian. You're right, it is a surprisingly easy procedure. I haven't found any blocked apps in the Market, have you?

Nope not yet anyway. Anyway to get the Keis version onto the phone through odin so we can see the blocked apps?

I found another complete (and more recent) package over at xda. I tried using it and I can see everything in Market with this JI6/Odin installed package.

The big difference you will notice with this one is that it does have a .PIT file which you will need to browse into your Odin along with the .TAR file in the appropriate areas before you click on Start.

So this must be the latest and greatest JI6 update for Odin installation - it was posted on 10/14. It comes as a .zip file. Just "extract files" and it will create a new folder containing Odin 1.3, .tar and .pit files. Go about the usual procedure for getting into the download mode and start the included Odin from within this folder, then browse to the .pit and .tar files and start.

I tested this and it worked for me.

The weird thing so far is that with the j15 I originally aquired through Kies the gps worked great and got me places. With the j16, the gps is all over the place. Any one else notice that? or is it just me?

so i decided to go through with this and my phone is now not loading up. It shows a cell phone, exclamation point, and a computer. I really do not know how it got to it. I followed the steps. Do you guys have any solution for this problem. I wouldnt even care if i reset the phone to default :(

update: so i got to the odin again and loaded the tar file through pda. It now says pass all threads complete. my screen is off now and is not loading back up alone. Do i just wait or do i reboot it myself.

Hi,

After searching around the internet I couldn't find my specific set of circumstances anywhere. I read above the guy tried updating his phone on Bell and only ran into problems.

Here is my background: I have a "virgin" phone. I have never modded it or hacked. Only downloaded/installed apps. It is a T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant, but I have unlocked it to run on the AT&T network.

Currently my phone doesn't even detect any satellites at all and says my location cannot be found. So pretty much, my GPS feature is useless (maybe this is because I am using the AT&T network?)

I tried samsung kies mini, and it will download the binaries, but every time it goes into the next phase to upgrade, it says it cannot be done. I've tried this multiple times with the same problem.

I am also a tad confused about how to use Odin. I understand to download those files, but is J16 already part of those files? And, is this just for T-Mobile service users? If I update my phone and try to use AT&T network after, will i still be able to use it, or will I encounter problems such as the Bell guy did. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

----------EDIT-----
Also, I have a friend who has a T-Mobile sim card. If I swapped his sim card into my vibrant for a bit, would I be able to get the OTA update?

Maybe, maybe not. I have never gotten an OTA update from any carrier or any phone since I've owned a cell phone. In my case, I used ODIN to put the update on manually (I also have no luck with Kies).

The reason the Bell guy had an issue is that the Canada Bell Vibrant is *NOT* the same phone as the T-Mobile Vibrant (different hardware means you can't use the same ROMs/Kernels/Updates)

If you have a T-Mo Vibrant, then Kies or ODIN would work to "force" the update. (assuming you can get either/or to work)

If you want to go this route, they are already up to JL5, so you wouldn't want to put JI6 on now.

Still, I saw something this morning that Samsung announced (or leaked) that the Epic is to get Froyo on 2/26, so you might just want to be patient and hope the Vibrant follows soon. On the other hand, who knows, could be months yet.

People on XDA are saying that JL5 is running really well though, so Samsung/TMo might finally be close.

alright, so I gather it should be ok to update to JL5 on my vibrant and still use the AT&T network?

XDA posted the JL5 here ([ROM] JL5, build date 2010.12.20 - Page 3 - xda-developers). So I download this rom, download odin from here, and from there I plug my phone in to my computer and open odin and just select the JL5 file?

Thanks all
I did the pure stock of JL4 the other day You linked to pure stock of JL5.

You pretty much have it correct.

You do need the samsung drivers installed first, if you haven't already. Also, you need to put your phone into download mode first. I had a big problem with this as I think some of the directions that I found are wrong.

Open Odin, plug cable into PC. Power off phone completely. Hold down volume up/volume down together, plug cable into phone. Download mode should come up. I think it's an android guy with a shovel.

I didn't lose any programs, program data or system settings when I did this with JL4, but I did lose my home screen icons and had to re-do those.

Ok, so I just downloaded the JL5, which I linked above. I noticed in the video there are two fields you have to fill: PDA and PIT. I understand the "T959UVJL5-home-low-CL790242.tar" should be chosen for the PDA, but what do I need to download for the PIT? the only other file the JL5 folder came with was "SS_DL.dll" which I have no idea what it is or what to do with. Thanks again guys!

---EDIT

What's a modem and kernel? They also have those uploaded on that thread...sorry for the lack of experience and all of these questions
