Root WiFi Tethering for LG Volt

I FINALLY got it working! For those of you that have had issues trying all the other methods and could use what I learned, here you go broken down Barney Style:

I used Shortcut Master (Lite) by vndnguyen from Play Store.

1) After installing and then launching the app, go to upper right corner menu and tap the three dots.

2) Do a search (third option from top in menu) for "Apn".

3) Towards the bottom, there are three "com.lge.hiddenmenu" options in white letters. IMPORTANT: Tap the middle option that reads "com.lge.hiddenmenu.vzw_only.ApnSettings" in gray letters under it.

4) Tap on "Launch" (picture of the rocket ship).

5) Tap on "internet" option at the top.

6) Go down and tap on "APN type". IMPORTANT: Now add ",dun" at the end of "default, mms". VERY IMPORTANT: When done, it should be "default, mms, dun". Tap "OK".

7) Go to upper right corner menu and tap the three dots. Tap on "Save". Exit out of app and reboot the phone.

8) When phone boots up, go to "Settings" and under "Wireless Networks" at the top, tap on "More...". The option is located below "Call" and "Share & connect" that are below the toggle switches for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Mobile Data, etc.

9) Tap on "Wi-Fi hotspot" and then tap on "Set up Wi-Fi hotspot". Set security (WPA2 PSK is best) and a password. A password is IMPORTANT! You should change Network SSID to "C:\Virus.exe", "Network Not Found", "Hidden Network" or whatever you like. Tap "Save".

10) You can now toggle "Wi-Fi hotspot" on and enjoy wireless tethering!

This method worked for me on Virgin Mobile LG Volt upgraded to latest everything then rooted, no more "Network Error" for tethering. But max users is still capped at 2. I tried to increase it to 8 in settings but it does not stick. Is there a hard limit in some prop file?

And if a call comes in, devices connected to wifi hotspot loses Internet connectivity (still connected to hotspot) even after the call ends. Solutions?

I thought I'd share my experience here and also had some questions.

I started with a new Sprint LG Volt. Rooted, installed TWRP and made a nandroid backup. I then tried build.prop change to false. Rebooted. No hotspot menus still. Then did the Shortcut master change to the apnsettings. Saved. Rebooted. No hotspot menus still. Then did the Shortcut master change for the ChameleonNodeMenu to value 4. Rebooted. Menus appeared.

However when I tested it, 4G LTE worked, but 3G always disconnected as soon as mobile hotspot was selected. Could not get that working.

Then tried Wifi Tether Router, and worked right away for both 3G and 4G. Great.

Then decided I wanted to revert everything, so restored the nandroid (done before any of these changes were made). The weird thing is that the Wifi Hotspot menus still appeared. Went back in and changed the ChameleonNodeMenu to 3 (it was still set at 4). Rebooted. Menus still there. Did a factory reset. Menus still there.

So, here are my questions:

- How do I get rid of the hotspot menus and why are they still showing after a nandroid restore/factory reset?

- Is the ChameleonNodeMenu preserved through a factory reset/nandroid restore? Is that some sort of flash values stored somewhere else on the phone such that they are preserved?

- Should 3G have worked without using Wifi Tether Router?

I should just use Wifi Tether Router, but I also like knowing what I did and why it won't revert back now, in case I ever want to give the phone to someone else.

Thanks.

Interesting note here. I've tested both wifi hotspot and usb tethering. With usb I'm getting nearly triple the speed. Speedtest.net reports the following

Wifi 4.84 down, 0.17 up
USB 12.5 down, 0.57 up

Thanks again for pointing me to Shortcut Master, volted! I just now managed to re-enable the built-in tethering menus with it. I've been using WiFi Tether Router for the last week or so and it worked fine, but it still bugged me that the built-in wasn't working. All the build.prop and APN settings in the world were not making any difference at all until I found this:

In Shortcut Master (lite), search for "ChameleonNodeMenu". Launch it and scroll pretty much all the way down. Click on "Tethered Data". Mine was set to "3". Tried a few things and found that setting it to "2" enabled WiFi Hotspot in the menus, and "4" enabled both USB and Wifi Hotspots.

You are the best, this did the trick for me. Thanks again!!

So im trying to use my data for a hotspot and i do the steps in the videos. But nothing happens, when i try to change apn it shows not found or wont let me click on it... Please help asap

What videos?

All you need to do is get Shortcut Master Lite, search apn. Launch the the one that says something about vzw settings only, and add dun to the apn type.

How to use. My 4g lte unlimited high speed as a hotspot. Is it different on a volt 2? Shortcut master keeps saying not found when i click the vzw apn settings. Then i tried hidden.vzw.apnsettings and it shows up but it wont let me edit it.. I think im doing something wrong or my phone sucks at life

It's probably different on Volt 2. It's a different phone on a different version of Android. You need to ask in the Volt 2 forum. You'll also need to be rooted.

This IS the xtra key to getting tethering to work, Thanks @lazysean & especially @Volted

So I have tethering working without buying any tethering service from my carrier. How do the carriers enable/disable tethering? Are we somehow getting around the carriers because we are rooted?

Boost is now providing hotspot free on all monthly plans (although it requires reselecting your plan to activate). Don't know about other carriers.
There are a couple root tweaks that can be made to enable hotspot without paying for it (noted in the post above).

Can someone help me please. Im trying to get free boost mobile hotspot
