Will Droid Ever Really Get Froyo?

HTC: 'most phones' launched in 2010 will get Android 2.2 -- Engadget

Notice that Motorola didn't make a statement like this; I'm leaning toward switching to an HTC device, the 2.1 upgrade drama with Motorola got pretty old after a little while. I know I know, everyone will just say to root once a stable version comes out, but I'm worried Motorola is going to take forever again to do what other companies can do faster.
 
You're of the mindset that HTC will have 2.2 out faster than Moto?
You do see where the Eris just got 2.1 right, same with Hero, is it even officially released for Hero?
Sit tight, you'll get it in due time, before HTC if you ask me
 
You do know that some HTC devices are just now getting 2.1 right? The difference was that HTC never promised anything so users just had to suck it up and wait it out. edit: SinfulDragon and I had the same thoughts :)

To answer your question, yes the Droid will get 2.2. Adobe's has already announced flash for Droid and demoed it a while ago (although the OS at the time may not have been 2.2).
 
Vanilla Android devices (like N1 and Droid) will most likely get Froyo before HTC and others since they don't have custom UIs that need to be retrofitted to fit the new OS. The biggest holdup will be due to the carrier making requests to block or limit certain features such as tethering.

the Droid drama was much better than the Eris drama. coming from an Eris, I would be shocked if they put 2.2 on any HTC device before 2011. probably won't be long before Moto has it.
 
The reason motorola didn't say anything is because they really didn't have to. I believe most of the motorola devices that are out will receive the update anyway. HTC only spoke up because they have devices out that would never receive the 'official' update. (G1, My Touch, Eris) Now, I use 'official' because there supposedly is already someone who is got a slightly working ROM for the G1.

Froyo will be on the DROID. In every major conversation about major updates, flash support, etc., Motorola DROID is always mentioned as being one of the updated.

Ultimately we are probably not going to see an 'official' Froyo release in 2010 either way but I give it just a month or so and we will have most of the 2.2 goodies incorporated into stable ROMs.
 
From several articles I have read, it "seems" that the HTC Incredible will be getting 2.2 before the Moto DROID. Of course, I question these sources ... but whatever. Just like 2.1, we'll get it when we get it. ;)
 
Froyo represents the first step in a many steps towards reducing the Android fragmentation. So, it's not a question of "if" we'll get the update, but "when" we'll get the update. Like someone said above, vanilla Android devices like N1 and DROID will likely get the updates before any other device running a custom UI. Look at it this way, after 2.2, Gingerbread will be OTA from Google with different parts located on the Marketplace. Then there won't be a bazillion inane threads about "Will the DROID get the update?" garbage.
 
Ouch, a lot of hostility in these responses. I didn't mean to infer that I don't think the Droid won't get Froyo, I was just wondering when. Also, I'm not of the opinion that HTC will get it sooner, it just seems like they came out and made a statement about it, whereas I haven't heard anything from Motorola. I'm just going on what I've seen so far, and was just wondering. Really, the 2.1 OTA wasn't that big of a deal, most of the upgrades seem cosmetic, but the Froyo seems like it will actually change the Android experience for most users. I'm just extrapolating if 2.1 took awhile, and I know it didn't compared to the Eris, then 2.2 might take even longer and it might be worth going to a device with more direct Google support.

Yeah, I wonder if that will include the Incredible, since the N1 isn't going to come to VZW. That would make it tempting, but who knows...

I figured this much. The new phones will always get latest update first. N1 did.

Yeah, I knew I would have a lot of people with the, "Just wait/ it'll come when it comes/what's the rush/etc..." comments. I really posted because HTC made their statement about 2.2 definitely coming out for their phones. And I agree with the unskinned phone over "new" phone argument; I think the delay has more to do with adapting it to raw Android vs. implementation for types of Android.
 
I'll bet that there will only be one HTC phone that gets 2.2 before the Droid, the N1.

I doubt the DI will be getting it anytime soon. HTC will take their sweet time porting Sense over to 2.2 first (which is a good thing, that's why Sense 2.1 is so great).
 
Based in the 2.1 update cycle, the Moto Droid should see it toward the end of the year or the first of next year. The main hold up will be Verizon. They will definitely try to kill the tethering feature....( or figure out how to charge for it )
 
I think the Droid will get it before the Incredible. Not only will it be easier because there's no custom UI, but it still seems to be the main phone at Verizon.

Bingo bango. This is def how it will happen.
 
All I can say is that including tethering in 2.2 better not ruin it for those people who use PDANet on an irregular basis.
 
My friend told me that he's got 2.2 on his HTC (not Incredible) and majority of things don't work, like the phone LOL
It is definitely going to come piece by piece - which is better than nothing.

Am I missing something here? I thought that the Droid was supposed to get 2.2 in June of this year? I don't know anymore.

To the OP, generally when you say things like "will the Droid EVER get 2.2?," then it does mean that you are inferring the Droid will never get the update. That much I do know about the English language.

Even though it was misleading, you don't have to be an a$$ to him.

And FYI, there is an HTC Droid Eris - so by saying "Droid" he was still technically correct, just in the wrong forum.
That much I do know about phones...
 
I am excited and I also believe that after the first "OTA" 2.1 update that verizon and motorola are going to be ready. It was also nice how we could manually update the phones via the update.zip file and not be rooted.
