I had to register just so I can comment regarding upgrading from the Evo 4g to the 4g 3D. I preordered $50 gift certificate from Radio Shack a month ago. The Radio Shack employee informed me that not only do I qualify for the Sprint upgrade (I already knew that, and wouldn't upgrade if I didn't qualify), BUT if your existing Evo 4G is in near perfect condition, you qualify for a $180 CREDIT. Yes, that's right, you read me correctly. So let me ask you this... for $20 dollars, would you upgrade to the 3D with dual core and better screen res? Yes, I certainly thought you would. Can't wait for tomorrow!

Actually, my past 2 phone upgrades have been practically free because I sold my phone on ebay. Sold my Mogul for $250 and basically just paid tax for my Touch Pro. Sold my Touch Pro on ebay, and same scenario (basically just paid for tax on EVO).

But with Radio Shack and Best Buy and Sprint doing these types of deals now, it adds convenience (rather than waiting on ebay).

Interesting. Being that I just got a replacement brand new EVO for the cracked screen one, I can basically turn it in to get the EVO 3D since its in perfect condition.

Too bad I don't want a EVO 3D.

Call about the evo 3d just to see what my options where.
They said would be the same contract And $199 plus $18 activation.
They assured me I could get at least $200 off of craigslist or ebay.
Was also told I had the same option as w/ my evo 4g purchase, the 30 day money back garantee.
I went ahead and ordered it. If I get $200 for my in mint condition evo 4g,which is what I see them going for on craigslist, how can I lose!

Bet you'd still be able to get enough to help on your photon purchase though ;)

While at the present time the Photon is on the top of my list of a possible replacement for the EVO 4G, I saw a tweet this morning about a true EVO 4G replacement being offered overseas The EVO 4G +

If I were to not need international coverage then that would be the phone for me. but lack of international coverage and lack of a kickstand (don't laugh) and the Photon is still on top of my list.

lately i have been itching to check out the HTC Flyer as well.

You could always go for the Kingdom, if you're willing to downgrade the processor and have no kickstand...lol. We already know it passed through the FCC.

I'm not seeing a huge benefit in upgrading to the 3D myself. If i really cared about having 3D pics and video, i could see a plus, but other than that, I'd have to really be wow'd by a huge performance increase over my current Evo. Granted, i've never been a 3D fan by any means. I know the specs are nice, but we all know that specs are sometimes just that, specs. How everything works in real-world performance can vastly differ from what white paper states it "should" do. If it gets tons of dev support like the original Evo does, i can see myself upgrading to it in the future if there's not something out less gimmicky (IMO). But i really don't like the look of it, doesn't appear to be as comfortable as the original Evo, and that huge camera button and 2D/3D toggle appears to be a breaking point when its dropped or snagged. From the review vids i've seen so far, it's performance hasn't been anymore impressive to me than the original Evo either, but that's just my opinion. That being said, I wouldn't bash anyone else for getting it, and i'm looking forward to testing it out next time i'm at Sprint to see what all the hub-bub's about :P

I had the orginal Evo but switched to the iphone 4 back in September. I was waiting for the Evo3D before I made the switch back to Sprint (I switch alot). Played with the 3D today for about 20 mins and was not very impressed. I can care less about the 3D aspect. Yes it was fast and smooth but I also picked up the Evo to do side by side comparison and it was about the same. Since the 2.3 update the first Evo seems just as fast as the 3D. Scrolling, lauching apps all the same. The E3D browser was a second or two faster but not enough to make me drop $199. Radio shack has the Evo for free with new activation so thats what I got. Yes its last years model but to me it still smokes most of the newer smartphones out. I dont regret it at all.

Not even close. I just got my 3D today and I am immensely impressed. I was running a rooted, custom ROM, overclocked EVO 4G and this thing is significantly faster. The 3D aspect was a very minor consideration but even that has exceeded my expectations. The haptic feedback is tighter and the build quality is better. The 4G is an outstanding phone that my wife will now love to death, but a lot changes in 1 year and the 3D is evidence. It may not be the phone for everyone, but to not recognize the improvements it offers is ignorant.

Chalk it up to me justifying my purchase if you want, but I'm just being honest.

Question, why does it matter if a phone is "fast"?
I mean we're not compiling code or playing games on them 24x7. Smoother page scrolling...gimmie a break.

I think we get caught up in the media hype. There have only been 3 game changing phones the past 15 years that really warranted the hype. The Palm Treo, iPhone and Evo 4g.

I'm good waiting until the next phone that displayes holograms with a built in tricorder or the Photon 4g. Whichever comes first. :)

I agree.. I dont really see the Evo 3D as being a true successor to the Evo 4G, but rather just a new addition to the growing family/trend of the Evo's.. my gut feeling tells me that bigger and better things are on the horizon.. and considering that im not eligible for a full upgrade until next winter i might as well wait to see what happens, especially since im still very much satisfied with my Evo, especially after it gets the gingerbread/sense update

that

i think im gonna get the samsung gs2. after playing with the 3d, i dont really care for the headache its gonna give me lol...plus the sgs2 is one beast of a phone! im really gonna miss sense tho:(

I don't know, dude. I guess ask the people with rooted phones that are overclocking and running lighter ROMs in the pursuit of a more responsive phone. Would you be just as satisfied with your Evo 4G if it had half of the processor speed? Perhaps you have deemed the Evo 4G the perfect speed for any possible use of a phone and the rest of us are wrong.

I don't write code or play any games more elaborate than WordFeud and I absolutely LOVED my Evo 4G. I thought it was quick (especially after rooting) and up to pretty much any task I threw at it. Coming from a Hero, my wife loves it as well. That said, the 3D is simply faster. I don't know how you can't find some value in screen scrolling being smoother, tasks reacting significantly faster, and being able to run more resource intensive features (e.g. live wallpaper) with no ill effects. Is that enough for you to have upgraded? Apparently not, and that is just fine, but don't act like there isn't some substance there for those that did upgrade.

As for this "hype" you refer to, I don't know where you are getting that from. Save for a tiny faction of people that are in the know about new technology, there was virtually no hype over the 3D.

I doubt they have all the bugs worked out of the 3d evo, i think the best phone out there is still the evo 4g like a great man ones said "if its not broken dont fix it"- Mike Holmgren

I'm sure this will be moved.

With that said, I was told I wasn't eligible to upgrade yet due to the premier customer thing being shifted around. However, I got into a sprint chat and asked if I could upgrade. They said yeah! I called a few weeks ago and I was told no that I had to pay full price. Now here's the best part. They are buying my year old EVO for 150$ through the Sprint buy back program and giving the me the 3D for 199$ plus an 18$ activation fee. So all in all I'm going to have roughly 80$ in the Evo 3D. Sweet deal if you ask me. Phone should be here in a couple of days.

Just throwing this out there for those who think you're stuck with the EVO. I can post up the conversation with the chat rep if anyone would like or I could PM it to you.

I was having to many issues with mine......it basically came down to living with it for a while longer or renewing my contract and paying $50. So I got the E3D. Off shopping for a case and a 32 GB sd card!

How is it shifted around? I'm a premium customer and I bought my EVO 4G last July 16th and was under the impression that on July 16th of this year I could get an upgrade to the 3VO for $199? If they buy back my EVO that would make it $50? Something wrong with that logic?

Thanks in advance for any new information.

I might be the only one whose actually done this on here..but I actually upgraded to the 3d from the 4 g..had it for a few days and returned it for the 4g..wasn't impressed at all witwith the 3d effects...nor the pics and bids that it took and saw the 2nd lens as a useless piece of glass that would just be a liability and waste..my girl had an evo4g as well so as far as the faster processor I did side by side basic tests on comparison of page loads and I didn't see anything really significant...the screen even on 2g really bothered my eyes and I hated the fact that the widegets are so damn small..and lastly I LOVE the more robust balanced size to the evo4gs screen..so im happy with my evo 4g again..I'll wait on the photon.

I was lucky enough to play with a friend's 3VO and after playing with everythind side by side with my 4G, I couldn't say i was too impressed. I feel like in real life performance, my rooted Evo4G performed fine against the 3D. I believe my 4G took brighter pics in the dark compared to the 3D which is a biggy for me. So for now... I'm not really considering the 3D, I'll wait to see what the Photon or Nexus 3 delivers.

Same here, I've told several people who were ready to upgrade and get the 3vo to wait for the Photon. I played with the 3vo the second day it came out and there was literally nothing about it that I liked. I didn't like how narrow it was, I didn't like the weird texture on the back, and I hated the fact that when I tried to hold the phone I was gripping half of the camera.

I took some pictures in 3D and they were alright I guess, but it's just a novelty to me. Much more important to me are battery life and the possibility of being able to use it as a docked lap top, which the Photon will be able to do.

The only thing I'm hoping for is that docking station to go down in price or for other Motorola owners to put it on Amazon, because $500 is such a f'ing rip off.

Photon forums are up, for those of you that want to start posting in there. There are already threads speculating on release date, general info, accessories, etc.

I just today switched back from a 3d to the original EVO.

Gorgeous screen on the 3d but everything was too small due to the highert resolution...not that this was the reason for the return.

On mine, 3g and phone signal and functionality sucked big time.

GPS constantly would loose signal...so I wonder if overall, many of these issues may have been caused by a bad antenna? Sprint said NO, so who am I to argue?

A huge issue for me was the woefully underpowered rear speaker. Couldn't hear the GPS (when working) or the phone ring in the car at all with the AC on or the windows open even a bit.

Looking back, unless I was a gamer or worried about microseconds difference in smoothness, I honestly see no reason to upgrade to be quite honest.

Therefore, I can back to a straight up new EVO 4G and I feel like I am home and functional once again :)

lol..glad to see I'm not the only one that was bothered by some stuff on the 3d...and btw I also noticed the difference in speaker volume as well..matter of fact my girlsfriend made a complaint on her 3ds volume...there is most definately a difference in the audio external speaker hands down.
