i have an upgrade i can use for 6-1-11 so the EVO 3D would probably cost me $200. if i use my upgrade in June 2011, i'll then have to wait 22 months until April 2013 to upgrade again. if i wait, i can pick up the "EVO 2012" in June 2012.

while the new Sense UI and qHD is nice - i'm not sure it's enough for me to burn my upgrade on. from the reviews i've seen on qHD display devices - there is not that much of a difference in real world.

the original EVO is fast enough and i'm not sure what dual core processor will give me in terms of real world. will i really notice it enough to make a difference? i have plenty of memory now - i barely use 10% of it. i have no need for HDMI or 3D either.

i don't want to sell my EVO either because it's a PIA to do so and i want to always keep my last prior phone as a backup in case my new phone gets damaged/lost/stolen etc.

i don't want to upgrade in June 2011 for a marginal jump in tech to then have to wait all the way until April 2013 when there will probably be a good jump in tech waiting for us in June 2012. i don't care that much about the $200 - but i don't want to burn my upgrade for such a marginal leap. if Sprint kept the annual upgrades for Premier Silver i would probably upgrade but that is not the situation.

what am i missing here???????

what am i missing here???????

Seems to me you're missing phone envy and the need to keep up with the Joneses - good on ya! :)

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'd say that when - or if - the mood hits and it's out, check out the Evo 3D in person. If you change your mind, fine, get it.

Otherwise - the best phone to come out in 2010 didn't stop being a great phone just because they came out with a new model. ;)

Anyway, that's my opinion.

i have found that skipping the incremental upgrades in the product life cycle works well. in other words - buy every other generation of a given product. buy the Palm V but skip the Palm Vx and buy the Palm TT. skip the Palm T2 and buy the Palm T3.

the EVO was truly revolutionary. the EVO 3D is evolutionary. it's an incremental jump at best. it's like the EVO 1.0 vs. 1.5. the EVO 2.0 will come in June 2012.

I have been undecided up to this point, but I've made a decision; I'll consider upgrading to the Evo 3D once root/ROMs are available for it.

I'll still enjoy it without root access personally. Down the road it'd certainly be nice because you get to change a lot more about the phone making it kind of new again, but I'll still enjoy it greatly :)

I have gone back and forth so much about this upgrade that it isn't even funny. I am pretty sure I am just going to end up waiting. I am still crossing my fingers that the next galaxy phone is an HTC build and that it launches on Sprint (other carriers are fine too, but would like it on Sprint). 4G or not, doesn't matter to me. Specs should be amazing if they are to compete with phones like the 3D and having an stock Google experience would be fantastic.

The bootloader is the deal breaker for me. My Evo is rooted and running cyanoogenmod nightly 85, with the tiamat 4.0.3-sbc kernal. Also has an 3500 mah seidio battery. This phone runs perfect, I can stream video for two hours straight, surf the net for two hours, listen to streaming music, make phone calls, recieve text, forget to plug it in at night and still have battery the next day. The addition of a 3D camera would be great, but my Evo never became what it is until I rooted it.

Probably everyone's heard the announcement by now - HTC has announced that they're NOT going to lock bootloaders any more.

Completely ignorant question, but...Is that something that can be adjusted via OTA for the software or is it a hardware thing?

The reason we call it nand unlocking and flashing come from the name of the silicon tech: Flash memory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So - whatever's there is just bits committed to memory.

HTC can - and frequently has - updated their HBOOT partitions via OTA on the Evos, changing signatures and revision levels.

HTC could easily send out an update for any signed or signed-with-encryption OTA and replace with a rev that has no signature, no encryption.

If 3vos are post-factory and in the distribution chain, I'd expect a launch day OTA, just like the Evo had a launch day OTA update.

If they unlock the bootloader on the Evo 3d that changes eveything, but HTC said no bootlockers on "future" phones, guess we will have to wait and see.

True - but many of us kinda think from the petitions that we were clear - do this to the Sensation or Evo 3D coming to the US (still future phones here), we walk, we do not buy.

For them to turnaround and try to loophole things when they know customer loyalty was that strongly on the line - I wouldn't imagine that they're that stupid; HTC aren't a bunch of fools.

Given that the turn of phrase was playing with tense, that became where would we have walked to in objection to the encrypted bootloader.

That's solved, so the question is really will you upgrade (Evo 3D)?

I'll be keeping my Evo for the next 5 years or so....since I have the Acer A500 honeycomb tablet I really only use me phone for the very basics....calls, text, tether for tablet, and internet when my tablet is charging. No need for me to upgrade unless they make a phone that can make love to me.

I read on the Phandroid news page in an update to that article about HTC unlocking bootloaders that they will unlock the Evo 3D. That's nice to hear.

So yes, I will be upgrading.

Having used dozens of handsets over the 25+ years of having wireless accounts this is the very first handset I would not consider dumping (as soon as my year is up on June 4th) for a new handset. Why?

This handset still performs very well, has Netflix/Rhapsody/Slingbox/Skype, I don't text much on it (hate texting anyway). I use the voice search for so many different things and 9 times out of 10 it works right the first time (except for that search I did for a restaurant and it returned a pornographic link! My wife laughed for 10 minutes about that one).

The few apps I actually do run, since I am very picky about what runs on this handset, run well, don't generally lag the phone and the final, rooting it and running the wireless tether for those times when I don't feel like breaking out the 3g/4g aircard make it difficult to consider upgrading. I can't spend too much time messing with this handset. It has to work for me 24/7 and I have a backup basic Samsung handset just for that reason.

Everything just seems to work for me so why change just yet? I am a wireless telecom engineer/Principal Solaris SA and deal with the stuff in conjunction with most every major carrier in the world so I see some things way ahead of time but even with the little quirks of this device i can't see getting rid of it now.

For me I will most likely pony up the $$ for the EVO View 4G tablet and use that as my play around device for my daughter and I. She can use it to watch TV in the back of the car and I can use it for all the other fun things I do outside of work.

Everyone has their own reasons for deciding to upgrade or not. I see the Evo 3D as gimmicky right now. If it survives 2 upgrade cycles then I can consider it a standard of sorts. The new and improved hardware is certainly tempting though. Aww hell, who am I kidding; I'll probably order the new handset in a couple of weeks just because I have to have it :) I'll need to explain to my wife why I need that and a new tablet. Gotta work on THAT one next.

I need to buy a ring to propose to my beautiful Girlfriend, plan a trip to Arlington Cemetery, etc., get a couple Tattoos, and get enrolled in a School.... and that's just this summer. A silly Phone can wait, I love my EVO.

I just cant justify updating to evo 3d. I spent a little time playing with nintendo 3ds and honestly it made me feel kind of sick. My eyes just felt like they were forced out of focus. Its hard to describe but it went from cool to uncomfortable.

My next phone will be samsung. I just love the super amoled plus screens. I know the resolution isnt as high as qhd. But the colors just look.amazing. My evo isnt bad. But I just dont see the advantages of dual core being that great. I dont play many games. So the update just feels like a marginal improvement at best.

Reviews for sensation are looking very average. Not that exciting. Htc needs to find a super screen tech to keep up.

I just bought an HTC Car Dock for the Evo 4G for $20 on ebay, so I guess I'll be upgrading when I'm eligible for an upgrade on June 2012. I'm content with the Evo 4G, that I don't see wasting money on any upcoming phones.
