Windows 10, Yay or Nay?

While I prefer Linux, I must stop bashing Windows as the masses will generally use it anyway. Win10 runs quite well even on older (Vista era) hardware and I've installed it on several for friends that I cannot convert. For those, I just provide a stock installation as tweaking it is just too time consuming. The forced (non-selectable) updates will usually undo much of my customization anyway.
I did the the same for my brother in-law. Stock install except I split the 500GB SSD 100/400 and disabled the spy stuff.

Even a trimmed-out Win7 or Win10 machine runs around 15-20% heavier on system resources than Fedora 23 or CentOS

Out of curiosity, does your Win10 show update KB2267602 as successfully installed? On mine, it keeps downloading, starting install, then that item disappears while any others update fine. It's for Windows Defender, and updating via Defender itself doesn't help.

Had to uninstall GWX Control Panel, which was supposed to keep Win10 from replacing Win7/8. It hasn't been updated since January and our old pal KB3035583 just popped up... GWX didn't even see it.

Funny, last July I was thrilled to get Win10. Now I'm determined to get rid of it, but resistance is (almost) futile.

would have been nice to have made an image backup clone of the computer before Win10 arrived.
I have 3 backups all the time.

I use Macrium Reflect, it is free for home use.

Macrium is a very good program for imaging windows. I still have backups of the 2 machines that I took the upgrade to. I set these as a "metered connection" so I haven't even updated to the big November update.

Sans an image, I have no qualms with a fresh install of win7 using a bootloader or other means should I want to rid myself of this invasive monster.

So now I'm trying to say the hell with it, you win, and upgraded to Ten. I'll really try to like it this time, even if it does use about 500MB more RAM. But I backed up my latest Seven just in case.

...and of course, I went back to Seven. It's just better.

Just ordered a slightly custom laptop and demanded it to be only Win7 so I could stay frozen there without dealing with Win10..

I'm sure MS had done a lot of chicanery since January, while GWX CP seems to have gone belly-up. So we're on our own.

GWX can be restarted, and it seems to be working fine on my Win7 box.

I froze my Win7 with last month's update: it is going to stay right where it is forever.

One of the umpteen times I installed Ten on a separate partition, it removed GWX from my Seven partition. I've reinstalled GWX several times and it still seems like an historic placemat.

...I've since reinstalled it, and it still says I appear to be safe, but it's already proven that I'm not.

I remember reading in a tech newsletter that Microsoft has now started actively searching for, and removing GWX in all of their Security Updates.... they are purposely trying to keep it from working.

that is why I froze my Win7, I am thru with their chicanery.

You can still update your win7 for security patches. Just set "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them”. Review/research each and every one before taking it. This (in combination with the GWX Control panel) should stop the invasion.

I got tired of GWX doing nothing, uninstalled again, went Googling and found the above. Have used it several hours, rebooted once, no ill effects so far. Then again, I don't know if it'll do any good – keeps the tigers away.

that is what I did, just didn't get into a long description.... I tend to get a bit wordy

Just a Tid Bit here:
My daughter's laptop uses WiFi to get to our ADSL router.
It is also ancient and in need of replacement, but it is PURPLE and has Butterflies on it from Sony!

She runs a business on that thing, and the loss of her data would just be horribly astronomical in effect...
So, I pulled out a neat little utility to backup all of her data to my 2 TB storage only drive...

this thing is neat as it will follow Network paths on WiFi..... works like a champ. It looks for changes once a day as I have it set up.

SyncBackFree

The link takes you to the Download page, if you want the program, click on SAVE.

If you need backups, why not just install Google Drive or Dropbox? It looks for changes constantly. So you get immediate backups offsite. No worries about HD failure, theft, fire, flood, etc.

I wish Windows had stayed at the best version ever - Win 2000 Pro SP3. Oh well. I handled Win 10.

2 TB on Google Drive?

no way in hell, we have an AT&T ADSL line, and our uploads are limited 0.8 kbps

just to upload a 250 MB movie to YouTube take 2.5 hours!!!!!!!

Nope, I will stay with my local WiFi which is a screamer, and save everything locally on my 2 TB hard drives, I have 3 of them. I do NOT trust the cloud for important stuff.

you loose your Internet connection and you are SCREWED!
and that happens repeatedly here...

I do hope you are duplicating to more than one drive, as you did mention you have 3. Mechanical drives can go tits up at any time. Have you considered an NAS? Other than purchasing the (large?) drives, you can get by rather cheaply with older parts and Linux (preferably in at least a RAID 1 setup). Important data (movies can be replaced) should also be cloned and saved elsewhere (offsite), in case of fire, burglary, etc. IOW, keep at least one of your backups on a drive with close family/friend should disaster strike. Of course you should also keep these on encrypted volumes to preserve your privacy.
